| If Arena rewards were a zero-sum game... Posted: 16 May 2017 06:27 AM PDT It's been rather popular lately to complain about Arena rewards. One recent reddit post calculated the expected value of an Arena run and concluded (although the statistics were questionable) that Blizzard is actually losing out on average. This inspired me to devise a reward scheme that would satisfy players, specifically making sure rewards always increase with more wins even when comparing the lower win best case to the higher win worst case. Since this is supposed to make sense for Blizzard, too, I designed it as a zero-sum game, that is, the entire gold paid for admission is paid out in rewards, no more and no less. A pack is valued at 100 gold for the purposes of this calculation, and dust is assumed to be of equal value to gold since that's likely the way it's treated on Blizzard's end (and also, disenchanting everything results in roughly 100 dust per pack for sufficiently large sample sizes). So first, we need to calculate a "complete" Arena tournament. The maximum number of rounds any one player will play is 14, so 214 players will always result in an integer solution for the final results. As it turns out, the fact 12 wins end a run influences the numbers in such a way that we can use half as many players and still end up with an integer solution. I won't go into the details of the calculation here as they're quite tedious, but do feel free to try this at home. So, based on 8192 players buying an Arena entry, the following numbers of players will end up at each score, acquiring a specific number of wins:
As you can see, the total number of wins is slightly less than 3 per player, and the total number of losses is of course the same. Subtracting the guaranteed pack, the admission per run is 50 gold, so the total admission paid is 50*8192=409600 gold. With a total of 24507 wins, this means one win is worth an average of 16.7 gold. Now of course, we will want to award a higher reward for the more difficult high wins, while making sure losing all games still results in some rewards. Issuing a guaranteed reward of value 20 to every player reduces the total admission we can distribute to 30*8192=245760, which is surprisingly close to our number of wins, making every win worth 10 gold with 253 gold left over. Ignoring the 253 for now, this would make our reward value in gold equivalent look like this:
What we haven't factored in yet is gold that would be rewarded to Constructed players. At 10 gold per 3 wins and a total of 24507 wins, this translates to an additional reward pool of 81690 gold. Let's keep the rewards up to 6 wins and only look at the ones starting at 7 for now:
If we add just 10 gold per win, we have 20233 gold left over including the 253 from earlier and end up with this reward structure:
We can use the left over gold to smoothen the curve and add 2 gold per win to rewards from 4 to 6, which leaves us with the following structure and 457 gold left over, which we'll award to 12-1 (2.5/win) and 12-0 (4/win):
We can now determine the midpoint between each tier and make the randomness reach all the way such that the best case of one tier is exactly equal to the worst case of another (except 12-x):
There's been some rounding in some places to make the numbers look better, but basically, this structure is what we'd get from zero-sum Arena rewards. Note that each of these may be gold or dust and depending on the function Blizzard use for the value of random cards, those could be in either place there. Additional packs have to either be discounted or can only appear at 12-x without breaking the other rewards, assuming we want to keep the 150 guaranteed gold at 7+. Originally, I wanted to find a better way of making rewards, but as I wrote and calculated this, I realized it primarily shows one thing: However inaccurate the statistics used were, /u/Shakespeare257's post does come to the right conclusion: Blizzard are in fact rewarding significantly more gold per win than the admission costs. | TIL how to organize your decks without remaking them. Posted: 15 May 2017 07:14 PM PDT I'll keep this sweet n' succinct. I just learned how to reorder decks so that the rampaging OCD I am afflicted by when I see a Shaman deck in between 2 Mage decks no longer plagues me! Just open the deck, convert it to whatever format it isn't (Standard/Wild) then back out to All Decks view - then go back in & swap it back to its original format. They will fall to the bottom of your list for the given format & you can rather easily rearrange all your decks! Sorry if this is already widely known, cheers! | Journey to Un'Goro is the first expansion without a card with an ogre in its art Posted: 16 May 2017 12:19 AM PDT Every expansion got a new ogre card except Un'Goro. I am not counting adventures because they are adventures and not expansions. In Classic/Basic we got Ogre Magi and Blouderfist Ogre. In GvG we got Dunemaul Shaman, Ogre Brute, Mogor the Ogre and Ogre Ninja (I still can't see him). In TGT we got Mogor's Champion. In WotOG we got Cho'Gall. In MSoG we got Second-rate Bruiser, Don Han'Cho, Big-Time Racketeer summons an ogre and I know a guy is an ogre Mogor is love. Mogor is life. | Reaching Legend with Control Shaman Posted: 16 May 2017 06:31 AM PDT Hello, I forewarn, this may be a long post! After hitting legend this month playing exclusively shaman I thought i'd write up about my thoughts and experiences. Close to 250 games with control shaman has been without a doubt the most enjoyable experience i've ever had playing hearthstone. Last month I hit legend with aggro druid and wanted to prove to myself I could repeat this feat with an entirely different deck. I chose Shaman as it is one of the least represented classes currently while having interesting tools against popular decks and also involving complex ingame decisions and win conditions Here is the decklist that took me from rank 4 - legend yesterday with a 100% winrate against both paladin (11-0) and druid (7-0) the two classes I faced most frequently. I came to this decklist after a lot of tinkering and will discuss some ommited cards, firstly however let's discuss some key cards. removal Devolve: A versatile silence in a meta that hates boardwide silence. Aggro druid goes wide and plays mark of lotus, you play this and win. Paladin will do the same with murlocs and pirates too. Hex: Paladin again has shining targets for hex (tirion and rag) and most decks have an equally large threat that is best dealt with by hex rather than devolve or volcano. Volcano: The pillar that holds up control shaman as an archtype. Being able to destroy lots of small threats or a few larger threats makes this card incredibly versatile and playing in a way to get the most value out of it is important to winning tighter games. Maelstrom and Lighting storm: pick boards full of low health minions, work incredibly well with spell power and are the easiest cards to combo with hallazeal for a big heal in the match ups where that is important (hunter, pirate warrior, aggro druid). Tidal surge: Commonly increased to 5 damage with spell damage to deal with one threat when volcano is overkill. The heal is more important than a jade golem that using jade lightning allows for. Spirit Claws: Initially this deck ran 2 jade claws. The 2 damage was useful in some matchups but mostly was used to over kill something with 1 health, or wasn't good enough to kill the real threats with 3... spirit claws filled this gap much more effectively and was the most recent change in the deck. minions Hot Spring Guardian and Jinyu: Before taking into account spirit echo, these cards offer 18 points of healing alone. Both have reasonable bodies that don't threaten but push games later where this deck flourishes Thing from below: An incredibly powerful card that has multiple synergies across the deck. Bloodmage: Spell power is fantastically useful in this deck. Dirty Rat: Originally this card was at 2 in order to interupt battlecrys and key cards. It is best played before a devolve or with a hex or volcano in hand. I found 2 copies overkill as playing one can force you into using removal in-optimally Stonehill Defender: Let's you play to your strengths in a matchup and thankfully Shaman has some great taunts to find. thing from below (fantastic), white eyes (great) , earth elemental (situational) and Al'akir (situational) Hallazeal the Ascended: Great late game heal necessary to win in games that you take a beating early on before flipping the board with your clears. Elise Trailblazer: Your win condition in fatigue scenarios. Barnes: Although not having an incredible swingy target (like the rag of old) barnes becomes a toolbox of sorts. Hitting either totem or thalnos is great and any taunt is useful. Barnes' real strength lies in combination with spirit echo however. Flametongue: One copy allows us to buff taunts and turn our hero power into some board presence. It becomes a must kill target as well as allowing us to remove our own excess totems before a volcano turn. Mana tide: The draw that keeps on giving. typically you can only expect 1 draw and to save a bit of face damage and to decrease your things from below by one mana, but when hidden behind a taunt this card wins games. Digging for those removal cards is how you win. star of the show Spirit echo: This card single handedly alters how various match ups play out. In the one variant that I ran with only one copy I always wished I had an additional copy. There are very few decks running cards that punish playing echo at the moment. In control match ups elise is your primary target and in aggressive match ups taunts and your heals are perfect targets. Thing from below is great played alongside spirit echo for 0 mana and your cards with battlecry (barnes, dirty rat, stonehill) are fine targets too. some care has to be taken that you don't just end up with a hand of totems however having totems in hand is not always bad as it can allow you to manipulate your hero power or further reduce the cost of thing from below. omitted cards low cost removal: lightning bolt and earth shock don't offer enough value n'zoth and n'zoth synergie cards: My first deck involved n'zoth but he had no effect in quicker games and wasn't needed in longer value games. Bringing back 3 white eyes is impressive, but not necessary. Alongside removing n'zoth I was able to remove the deathrattle cards that were ineffective on their own. Mistress of Pain: The extra healing was sometimes relevant and it really improves the match up against aggro druid, but otherwise offers very little. jade package: Jade cards would improve your match up against control shaman decks without it, but otherwise require omitting too many strong cards for in my opinion. I at one point ran jade claws, lightning, chieftan and aya but experienced a big win% increase when I removed these cards. Doomsayer: dies too easily against aggro, has too little impact against control, and no impact at all in some match ups (also scary to run alongside barnes) Murloc Package (i kid you not): The most interesting period for this deck perhaps. It used to run 1x unite the murlocs, 2x call in the finishers and 2x bluegill/primalfin totem in order to use megafin as a sweet finisher. It held a 50% win rate and taught me the importants of flametongue, an early game weapon and having fun. But also won a lot of it's games never completing the quest... and so was scrapped. matchups Now i'll discuss some common match ups in order of frequency. Paladin Arguably the deck to beat right now. Aggro, midrange and control paladin have solid match ups and are frequently met on ladder. The most important cards in this match up are devolve and hex. Hex is saved for tirion and the inevitable second tirion from stonehill defender. Devolve is used early game to nullify the early flood of buffed murlocs (sometimes allowing you to kill a wisp and have that returned to their hand with get away kodo). A second devolve silences spikeridged steed Druid Jade druid is a very difficult match up and requires a rare case of taking risks and going on the aggressive. Thing from below with it's 5 health is difficult to remove and is usually key to victory here. Aggro druid is the better match up by far and is the one that requires most attention in the muligan. Volcano and devolve are needed for that early pressure. Sometimes you get to devolve a board of living mana or get to volcano a bittertide hydra for easy wins. Warrior Pirate warrior plays similarly to both paladin and aggro druid early on. Your healing and taunts make this a favourable match up. This is also the match up 2 cards shine in - maelstrom and tidal surge. The former keeps you in the game early and tidal surge is an additional answer to frothing berserker which otherwise wins games on it's own. Taunt warrior is an interesting match up and of all of them suffers most from rng. They will complete their quest so it is about playing to win post that time. Thankfully spirit echo and a board full of totems can turn his 8 damage hero power into a non-threat... but you have to force out both brawls before that moment. Hex is strange in this match up because they don't have any super strong targets. mage I want to kiss the person who made secret mage a 'thing' because prior to that this deck lost to all mages. Burn/freeze mage: dirty rat alex/medivh and heal heal heal heal. A win can be scraped out in these match ups but mostly you can't deal with the face damage. Secret mage: Has a lot less burn damage and actually plays minions so your removal isn't wasted dead space. Devolve deals with mana wyrms if they get too big. hunter midrange hunter: Devolve again is super important with the early game and your most useful means of killing scavenging hyenas. This is the match up i've felt totem rng the most, praying for that spell power is painful. Control the board first and then heal. A good hunter player makes it hard to get value out of volcano but it still remains a core card in your game plan. priest Silence priest: Let them silence their overstatted guys before devolving them and a radiant elemental. The big buts on their guys make volcano less valuable in this match up. Turn 1 northshire is a pain to remove too and they are guaranteed a few draws off your totems if they so wish. Beware their divine spirit combo. Get this to late game with elise played and you should win. Miracle Priest: the easier of the two match ups as there is less pressure early. Same rules apply - play for value while mitigating means of dying to a combo. rogue Quest rogue - concede. I managed to only win twice against quest rogue and both times it felt that they drew about as bad as the deck can. Miracle - hex arcane giants, devolve edwin and in general try and keep their board pressure down. Hallucination is a horrible card to play against because you can't play around it. Remember vilespine is a card but don't fear it too much as it's hard for it to get too much value. They will definately go off with gadgetzan at some point, but this isn't the end of the game - sometimes it's worth leaving gadget alive and playing to fatigue the rogue. Shaman and Warlock seen so infrequently that i've not much to say! Some final thoughts Control shaman is positioned very well right now, devolve and volcano make for an effective controlling package that counters the objective of many tier 1 decks. Control shaman is one of the harder decks to pilot to success and at times one of the most frustrating (see below) The current state of the game is incredibly polarized by quest rogue - this deck should not exist. Last season I had a close to 100% win rate against it, this season with a control deck the exact opposite. It allows for so little meaningful play that I can't help but find myself frustrated at it's existence. Control shaman builds are not final but I believe playing, as I have, a deck with a lighter top end and using spirit echo as a win condition is the best direction for it. | Can we please change the screenshot location? Posted: 16 May 2017 05:05 AM PDT Hearthstone is literally the one and only PC Blizzard game that doesn't save screenshots to a relevant game directory. With the introdcution of World of Warcraft, Blizzard started changing the default save location to \Documents<game name>\Screenshots. This was over 12 years ago. Some even allowing you to specify the format and rendering resolution.
Hearthstone saves screenshots to the desktop and has no way to change this. I know Blizzard is just a small kickstarter startup, but what gives? Why is Hearthstone the odd one out, and why hasn't this been addressed after 3 years?

| I've taken to conceding vs all my rank 6 opponents. Posted: 16 May 2017 04:38 AM PDT My aim each season is really just to hit Rank 5 for the golden epic card so once that's done, and now that we have the awesome level floors I really see little reason not to concede to an opponent who I know hasn't hit 5 and is very close. There's nothing worse than being one win away (especially if you're on a win streak) from hitting Rank 5 only to lose and having to spend potentially a lot more time grinding out those last few wins. Sure this doesn't apply to everyone, but for me personally I feel I can really relax a little more easily once I hit Rank 5 and just conceding and finding another match a few moments later is really no hassle at all. | Posted: 15 May 2017 11:32 AM PDT Regardless whether the cards are good or not. For example, with Midrange Hunter being pretty powerful right now, I would automatically assume Bestial Wrath would be broken for its beast synergy and epic value, despite it being one of the worst cards in the game. I asked this back in Mean Streets, am curious what people would think now. [link] [comments] |
