Get the Shopkeeper's Quiz In-Game - Test Your Item Knowledge

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 01:38 PM PDT

The Shopkeeper's Quiz used to exist in-game and allowed you to test your knowledge of item components while you queue.

Although it's been removed from the game, it still exists here.

I've ported this into our Dota 2 overlay so you can conveniently access it while you're in game: https://i.imgur.com/AuztZlM.jpg

You can download the overlay for Windows (64-bit only) here: https://dota2.becomethegamer.com

The core purpose of the overlay is drafting assistance. However, it will eventually be configurable such that, if you're not interested in the drafting assistance portion, you can disable it.

A huge thank you to this entire community.

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 04:43 AM PDT

Around 3 weeks ago I made my first post here about my first game not against bots going very very poorly and how to improve from there.

Since then I've posted a couple other times and recieved nothing but an insane amount of help. Some replies short and to the point others several paragraphs.

Whether it was tips about how to learn things or sharing knowledge on the game I read every single bit of it and it has helped me immensely. I'm starting to have really great games where I play well and enjoy myself. My greatest accomplishment so far was going 15-2-19.

In closing to all the people who took the time to help me I appreciate it and can't thank you enough. And for the people who didn't submit help on my posts but help on others I appreciate that as well it helps the community. Thank you!

Dumb question about wards

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:24 PM PDT

If i have observer wards and buy sentry wards they are in the same stack.

How do i toggle between the 2? like if i want to use the observer ward for example i don't want to use all the sentry wards first.

Cheers.

An idea for a mobile/web app to help players learn how to draft.

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 02:32 PM PDT

What do you guys think about this app?:

It pulls random matches from dotabuff/opendota

It displays two things to the user: the heroes that were picked, and the skill level/average mmr of the game.

The user simply has to guess which side won, based on the picks.

This would help the user in understanding hero synergies and counters better, so they would become better at picking a hero that fits in a draft.

It could track the user's success rate which should be a decent representation of their drafting ability. (or is it not enough?)

It also could have some settings like a specific skill level the user wants to see, or specific hero picks, etc.

Do you guys think and app like this is useful? If so, who is willing to make it?

New Storm Aghs Question

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 07:58 PM PDT

If I go on a hero and he move's out of the range of the vortex target (475), the spell will just on CD and slow me right?

If that's a case, is it better to aim your zips close than before in case they move around a lot?

I need basic and moderate tips for roaming as a support

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 07:10 PM PDT

So basically in the upper 2k bracket, supporting is poor in SEA. I have tried to adjust into the role and I seriously can't support like many good supports do. I see Lions in pro game get daggers in 15 mins whilst sustaining the warding and dewarding. Idk, Imo for me, supporting is a role of luck. If your team can't cooperate then you're fucked. It just rhymed (no it didn't). Anyway yeah I need answers to these questions and additional info added:

*When do I gank mid? (level or minute mark)

*What solo support hero can I pick that is viable and good for starters? (people 2k to 4k usually have only one support)

*How do I ward? The sequence, the time limit. Do I buy wards 'til they're empty stocked?

*When do I smoke?

*When do I put defensive/aggressive wards?

And more info you guys can spare :/ thanks

How are you guys playing slardar nowadays?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:52 PM PDT

I just decided to expand my offlane hero pool and slardar was the go to suggestion from everyone. So i decided to play the hero, got blink dagger at 14 mins then it was just a killfest and no breathing room.

Questions-

  1. Which boots? I like PT, but phase active is really really good man

  2. Force staff? When to pick it up?

  3. What heroes slardar is good against so i look out for them?

  4. Tips?

  5. Is iron talon jungle slardar a thing?

Blademail before blink on legion?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:25 PM PDT

Hi I just came across something weird in a ranked match recently, where my legion commander went something like boots blade mail then blink. I don't play the hero much but I would assumed that blink (and rarely shadowblade) into blademail would be stronger most of the time. On top of that if you were dueling squishy supports without much rightclicks it wouldn't add much damage anyways right?

For reference my team was LC, ember, lion, troll warlord, sand king vs broodmother, storm, wraith king, omni, and shadow demon. Just curious because this is like the 2nd or 3rd time i seen something like this recently so idk if that's just player error or there's something I am missing. Thanks for the help.

ok to spam single draft?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 03:54 PM PDT

Hi, i recently quit league, and have been playing dota for a few weeks, and i was wondering if it was ok to play only single draft? i am level 15, and at first, i was playing only drow and lich, but with single, i have played a bunch of new heros i love (terrorblade is my new fav hero) i think this is better than only learning one hero!

What are you guy's thoughts?

Also, if you want to add and play, id love some more people to play with

Is someone making draft analysis videos?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 08:21 AM PDT

I know this sub is not about competitive dota but more about hero specific mechanics but for me, the draft is the most exciting part. I also think that talking about counters and combos is pretty beneficial for everyone playing MM or Battlecup.

Such an analysis is difficult because we don't know about scrims and everyone has their comfort heroes but I would really appreciate it. I know ppd did some but he doesn't and can't do it frequently.

Can someone answer quickly why TB was banned in 3082689492? Is it because LS would not be able to kill him at all with Weave?

Thanks!

How to deal with invis roaming heroes (riki, bh) as a solo support?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 05:09 AM PDT

I understand that supports can get gold in the laning phase by stacking and pulling, but what if there is an invis roamer on the enemy team that is making life tough for your mid/other lanes? Can't just leave your mid alone and continue pulling/stacking, but if you go to help your mid, where does your income come from to sustain the buying of wards?

Low MMR Replay Coaching, submit your dotabuff

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 12:48 AM PDT

Hi guys. I'm looking to do a series focusing on coaching around 1k MMR players. It will basically be a replay coaching focusing on the simple stuff. If you want a replay coaching submit your dotabuff and I'll pick a match I think would be a good example. Submit your matches below, might take me a while to get to them but I'll get a bunch done from them. Feel free to resubmit if I've already done one, I'll probably leave yours a while (hopefully see some improvement) but I will come back if theres a game that shows some good stuff.

To give an examply you can look the the first 2 I did here 1.3K MMR Phantom Assassin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNELWeTonlk 0.8k MMR Necrophos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDUMyBoyPnk

The aim here is to focus on the simple stuff that low skill players miss. I'm not going to go over every situational thing that could affect a game.

You can stop reading here the rest is just waffle

I remember wathcing Purge's videos (and you should still check them out by the way) but one thing that struck me is that when I watched them a year later I got completely different value out of them because my understanding of the game had changed. This is becuase players at the bottom end of the dota learnign curve simply do not have the foundation knowledge to take full value out of the stuff at the top end of the learning curve. My goal with this series will be to get the players to over 2k MMR and to build the foundation knowledge that will see you getting full value out of watching higher skilled games.

I have recently been coaching my fiancée who hasnt even unlocked ranked yet. This made the skill gap issue clear. To a 4k player I might say "stun that guy". But do I just mean stun that guy. No I mean, attack once, attack move stun, step 2 steps left to hide in fog, eat tango during fight to keep hp high, attack move 2 more steps left apply slow attack move twice more, stick for mana, cast stun right click once more, back off 2 stewps to hide in fog, wait for ult to reengage. You see the 4k player knows that combo, but not just that he knows where the enemy fog is. Even if I teach someone to attack move will they know where the enemy fog is? Will they know how to count stick charges, will they know which spot to hide in to make a perfect cm ult if the enemy re-engages. Do they even know what tangos do? When you tell someone its a good idea to pull now do they know how to pull? A couple of games with my fiancée made me realise how much a different approach needs to be taken to coaching players at different skill levels.

When to buy Hand of Midas?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 07:07 AM PDT

Hand of Midas is an item that I never really understood and most people that bought it in my past games got punished for it.But I had some success with it when I bought after I lost my lane in a couple of games

As a pos 1 should I buy it when I lost my lane or when I'm freefarming? Is it good for which heroes? What heroes is it good/bad against?

DOTABUFF and OpenDota Total Differences

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 12:52 PM PDT

My totals win-loss for the two are different and the percentage as a result. 59.47% in DB and 60.23% in OD. What is the reason for the difference for this? Does it take insignificant matches into account. If it is just abandons counted as losses - where have my extra 2 wins come from. I'm not sure which site is more accurate anymore.

How is nature's prophet played now?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 10:20 AM PDT

I was looking through some of the high mmr NP builds, and i noticed that people are building shadow blade and pike an awful lot on him, and the traditional items like necrobook and desolator are not really being used much. Items like linkens, scyhte of vyse, mek, bloodthorn and shivas are also not uncommon. So what will be the optimal playstyle for NP right now, a teamfight oriented build or the old rat build? I would like you to answer this question from a 1k mmr standpoint

Early game as a roamer/EarthSpirit

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 03:22 AM PDT

What do you do within the first 6 minutes as a roamer? This position has always felt awkward to me at the start of the match. I love playing earth spirit, and I used him to climb around 1.5k a year ago as an offlaner (going stout shield and urn, waiting for a fast 6 with the priority of not dying). Yet he doesnt work as great as one anymore (especially now that you cant pull creeps into trees), and I only ever see him played as a roamer in other games. I havent picked him much recently cause we always need a safelane support or we end up with a jungler.

So what do you do at the start? Just hang out mid waiting for an opportunity to roll in? Stack camps at 1:00? Try for a lvl1 gank safelane?

MatchID: 3099206420

I, Abbadon, feel I went really well by myself, however, my team (and I, a tad bit) helped legion get her whopping 544 duel damage. What could I've done to change the tides of this match by myself?

Aghanin and tarrasque? Maybe went for a early to mid game victory? Tell me.

Drafting offlaners in mid 3k

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 08:08 AM PDT

So I play offlane almost exclusively, and the last few days I've been running into an issue where it seems like even if I can keep 1 or both supports in their safe lane trying to zone me, my other lanes have been losing 4v2. Now this isn't a flaming my teammates I'm better than everyone post, but when I run into these games as someone like clockwerk or even axe who are relatively reliant on followup by your teammates, it seems like an insta loss. Should I be drafting more selfish offlaners like aba or void who are less reliant on followup by teammates if I have an item or two? I'm hovering between 3.5 and 3.8 lately if that makes a difference. Just want some opinions!

Define: Win Condition

Posted: 04 Apr 2017 10:42 PM PDT

I don't mean destroying the ancient, or in pro games a team calling gg.

I mean, what do casters and panelists mean by "win condition". For example, during a draft a panelist might say, "I don't see a clear win condition from this team". What exactly do they mean?

Win condition = hit a good timing for items to be able to beat out opponent?

What did I do wrong in this Jugg game?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:37 AM PDT

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3099541171 1.3k avg game I was mid jugg and I was doing good in the mid game I think. And I went for SnY for the tankyness against CK and Sven and got blink to catch the sniper and went for Skadi next to get for stats and extra hp but I don't know what I could have done to win the game, like the enemy riki got so fat from killing my teammates and I don't know if it was my fault for not Itemizing properly or not pushing enough.

tbh I feel like my teammates were dead weight, but I don't want to blame them but still...
