[News] Celebrate ESOs Three Year Anniversary

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 08:03 AM PDT

[Discussion] I think it's time to acknowledge the elephant in the room... the issues with server stability and connection to the servers.

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 11:37 PM PDT

Now first and foremost, I'm not going to just flame Zenimax for doing nothing and letting these server issues go unspoken. I really want to see ESO move forward, and I feel this is a massive burden that's just becoming more and more problematic as time goes on, and I will explain why I think that is later.

I also recognise that given my location relative to the server I play on, Australia and PC NA respectively, also contribute to any connection issues I myself am experiencing. But I'm not just referring to my own connection issues, rather the issues plaguing everyone.

I'm simply going to get it out there. While this is a terrific game that one can put hundreds, thousands of hours into, the servers continue to be a detriment to the enjoyability for not only me, but also other people. On several occasions I've gotten into the game and just been kicked in the gut because of how laggy the game is, and I am forced to quit because it is genuinely unplayable. Spikes every 2 or 3 seconds up to 500+ ping, from my usual 250-300 ping, and sometimes even sustained 999+ ping with all activity in the game frozen until I am either kicked back to the main menu, or it finally catches up and I am now lying dead on the ground because the boss or whatever I was fighting killed me while my game was frozen.

I had the same issues happen last night. I logged in and my connection was fine for about a half hour, then suddenly ping ramped up to about 600-999+, while I was notified a friend of mine who lived in a completely different country was also experiencing connection issues (infinite load screen and "you are already logged in" messages), while another friend of mine also had erratic ping. I pushed through, until everything froze and I was kicked back to the main menu. Trying to log in a total of 3 times while being told "you are already logged in", I found that the PC NA server had died and my entire guild, as well as a load of people from Bangkorai zone chat and several people in the subreddit's Discord also got kicked and all had issues logging in. I eventually got back in to, you guessed it, perfectly fine ping. Prior to server crashing, my ping was spiking crazily high. After it had crashed, it was stable, until about an hour or two later when most people got back in, and it behaved erratically again. Turns out, the Xbox NA server also crashed around the same time. I don't think this is merely a coincidence.

I also don't think my ping suddenly becoming fine after the server crashing, only to become problematic again an hour or two after it came back up was a coincidence, either. What I think the problem is, is there's way too many people on the servers and they're being overwhelmed.

Think about it.

Prior to One Tamriel dropping, my connection was fine. No issues whatsoever. The moment One Tamriel dropped, connection issues galore. How? One Tamriel not only brought more people into the game, but it also abolished several instances, meaning more people were in the same instances, stressing those instances a heck of a lot more.

When Homestead dropped, for the first couple days there were severe connection issues in several zones including, from memory, Reaper's March (specifically Rawl'kha) and Rivenspire. Homestead, again, brought more people into the game, and it also gave people incentive to complete a given zone for that zone's house(s). Coincidentally, Sleek Creek in Reaper's March, right near Rawl'kha, was considered one of the most worthwhile homes to buy, so a lot of people rushed to get it first thing, overloading Rawl'kha, and the greater Reaper's March with a lot of traffic in a single instance.

PvP, a huge zerg of 30+ people goes on, ping ramps up and some people with poor connections to the servers sometimes end up getting kicked (I got kicked from Azura's Star multiple times when DC decided to zerg-rush Nikel/Roe).

Popular spots and zones for grinding sets, gold and XP, all have lag issues. Dolmens with loads of players on them, lag issues.

This new event and the upcoming release of Morrowind is bringing more and more players in. Everything is pointing to there simply being too many people on at once. And when Morrowind finally drops, and if the servers are indeed being overloaded, it's only going to get worse.

So what can be done?

Zenimax could re-introduce more instances to try and lighten the load a bit by spreading the load amongst multiple instances. I'm not quite sure how extensive instancing is integrated into sub-zones like delves, dungeons and pub-dungeons, so can't speak there. But for certain parts of a zone, you could move them to separate instances.

Zenimax could also split zone instances up a bit, have two or more, separate instances of a zone to lighten the load.

Another possible solution could be more megaservers. An Oceanic megaserver for us Aussies and anyone that would benefit from one would be nice.

And most importantly, Zenimax could be more transparent on issues like this, if it is the servers being overloaded. I know I said I wouldn't rag on Zenimax, but Zenimax in my opinion is ignoring the issue, or at least not commenting on it, a little too frequently. I'm pretty sure the community won't slaughter you, Zenimax, for just admitting there's too many people on at once. I personally wouldn't.

I'd be interested to hear what other people in the community, and possibly even Zenimax themselves, think of the server issues currently. I do genuinely want to get these issues sorted. In my humble opinion, server issues as well as a few other issues are what stands between this game being a great game, and it being an excellent game.

If we get a Jubilee Event crown sale, what will you get?

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 05:30 PM PDT

So I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that we get a sale to help celebrate the 3 year milestone. If we do, Serenity Falls, merchant and banker are in my sights...possibly the Khajiit robust target skeleton too.

Anyone else holding out for a sale to buy some goodies?

[xbox] 72 hour bans are being handed out for keep flipping

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 12:14 PM PDT

For anyone logging in to a ban, you were probably either guilty of keep flipping or got caught up in it. ZOS has determined that this is a exploit and has given temporary bans to players that participated in the huge keep flip farms during the double AP week.

In addition to the bans, fraudulent AP has been removed.

Here's the account recovery page if you feel that you were banned in error, although if you're guilty please don't waste support time by submitting a ticket.

Edit - wasn't just xbox, all platforms were subject to bans

[Discussion] A Comprehensive List of Useful Sets

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 09:11 AM PDT

Edit: I will make a part 2 post with much more information, please keep your suggestions coming.
.
Being a PVE player, every day doing different dungeons and perhaps trials every week or so, you come across so many sets most of which are bind on pickup. Personally, I really don't know what to do with those pieces. Should I deconstruct? What if this might end up being useful for another character I will make in future? What if it is super rare? (Looking at you Ebon infused legs)...
Therefore, I decided to make my own list of all sets that I think are/could be useful for any kind of build. Especially that best-in-slot gear is not easy and takes time to obtain. Please help me refine my list by suggesting to add/remove any set, maybe we can make this post a good reference to all players struggling like me.

Light Armor

Amber Plasm, Burning spellweave, Infallible mage, Infallible Aether, Lich, Moondancer, Necropotence, Overwhelming surge, Scathing mage, Silks of the Sun, Spinner's, Spell power cure, Twilight remedy, Wise mage, Worm.

Medium Armor

Bone pirate, Essence thief, Hircine's veneer, Leviathan, Red mountain, Roar of Alkosh, Sheer venom, Spriggan's, Sunderflame, Sword singer, Twice-fanged serpent, Viper's sting, Vicious ophidian.

Heavy Armor

Akaviri dragonguard, Mazzatun, Ebon, Footman, Knight-errant's mail, Lunar bastion.

Jewelry Sets

Agility, Endurance, Willpower.

Traits

DPS: All divines, infused for large pieces is 2nd best. Sharpened for weapons. Arcane jewelry for magicka, Robust for stamina.
Healers: Divines on small pieces, Infused for large. Defending for weapons, powered is 2nd best. Arcane jewelry.
Tanks: Sturdy on small pieces, infused for large. Reinforced shield. Infused for main weapon, powered/defending for secondary. Robust or healthy jewelry.
PVP: For PVP you want to go all heavy with impenetrable trait. Most people use crafted sets for that purpose, and use jewelry/weapons from light/medium sets.

Notes:

  • List is being updated based on comments.
  • I will make hyperlinks at some point. That or I will share my excel sheet when list is complete.
  • List does not include VMA/master weapons or monster sets, I think those are all worth keeping in the right trait.
  • List does not include sets obtained from PVP. I'm clueless about those. Please suggest.
  • List does not include craftable sets, only dropped sets.

Weekly rewards PS4 EU (Probably all consoles?)

Posted: 04 Apr 2017 04:14 AM PDT

I'm sure most of you are aware that the trials have been some what problematic for us console players, the biggest offender without a doubt being VMOL. Call me crazy but making the trial with the most disconnects/lag the trial for weekly rewards feels like a slap in the face, yesterday I saw the best trial team on PS4EU enter and leave within 15 minutes, my trial team quit after we had 6 or 7 different people disconnect on the twins, it's unacceptable the state trails are in for console.

The Road to my sharpened vMA Inferno Staff [documentation]

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 09:22 AM PDT

Hi, I want to tell you a short story which is followed up by some statistics about my road to the sharpened vMA Inferno Staff. Once the Orsinium DLC lunched back in the days, I was taking a break from ESO. After two or three months I finally found a new drive to play this game. At this time my main character was a magicka nightblade and I just started to get into raiding and PVE which was fairly new to me as a PVP player. (I have almost only played PVP games and so did I at ESO) The goal was obvious: Best in Slot gear since I am a competitive person and would not stop until I got it. So I started to farm the vMA Inferno Staff with my magicka nightblade. 80-100 runs and a few weeks later (I did not document it at this time) I completed a full set of stamina DD weapons. I was very frustrated that the staff would not drop for my beloved magicka nightblade. I decided to start a stamina DK to be able to raid at a high level since I already got the gear on my bank and it was probably the best decision Ive made. I love my stamina DK so much more then the magicka nightblade - maybe because it felt complete too. I had so much fun with my stamina DK and had some friends who would let me raid with their guilds (I was still a raid-newbi). My performance gave me confidence and I wanted to get even better, so I was looking for a more progress oriented guild and found a guild that is really good for me. Unfortunatly stamina took a big hit over the last two big patches. That was the reason for me to get the BiS magicka gear to have a twink ready - just in case. I was very frustrated at the beginning of my continued vMA farm and decided to document my loot for statistic purpose. Here are some results; please check this document for more.

  • Total amount of drops: 234 (+ estimated 100-120 before my documentation began)
  • Most frequently trait drop: Sharpened 17,2%
  • Most frequently weapon type: Bow 14,5% (followed by Daggers and Restro Staffs)
  • Fewest trait drop: Decisive 8,8%
  • Fewest weapon drop: Frost Staff 4,7%
  • Amount of days since the documentation started: 163
  • Amount of Sharpened Inferno Staffs: 1 (today!)
  • Probability to get such a Staff based on my data: 1/234 = ~0,4%
  • Probability to get such a Staff based on my data since Homestead drop chance changes: 1/94 = ~ 1,06%
  • Most frequent sharpened weapon drop: Bow (10)

Q: What was your motivation to continue?

A: At first it was to get BiS gear - later it was the score!

It really helped me to focus on the score and not on the loot. I barely payed any attention to the loot anymore. This way I would not get frustrated by whatever trash weapon came in sharpened and good weapons that came in sh1tty traits.

At last I want to share my opinions to the vMA. At the moment it is "ok-ish" content wise with the potential to be great. How? Here some of my thoughts:

  • Spectator mode: Allow friends and guildies to walk on something like a tribune around your stage to watch the fight! (They should be silenced and out of stamina so they would not take your attention with spamming skills on the tribune)

  • Eliminate the luck factor on some stages (stage 7 mushrooms) - otherwise you would have to grind vMA for that run where everthing is perfect for a top score.

  • Give us an even harder arean mode. At the moment only a small percentage of players can complete the vMA - I am aware of this. But for the veterans its not much of a big deal anymore (shoutout to andy.s and StreakOne for example). Something like a nightmare mode could be cool - like more overlapping mechanics or something like the summoners on stage 7 be immortal so you would need to be constantly watching for popping mushrooms

  • Lower the chance of bad traits. People should not be forced to grind such content for so long. Just increase the chance of the good weapons by 1-2% and it would be actually really good.

TL;DR:

  • mNB main got vMA stamina weapons first and converted to stamDK main --> best decision Ive made (fun wise / only for me)

  • Still farmed vMA for BiS magicka weapons just in case

  • Frustrated of the drops and documented my loot

  • Found motivation by aiming for a high score and payed barely any attention to the loot

  • Finally got vMA Inferno Staff sharpened

  • Thoughts on changes that would make vMA actually a better content

New player, DK tank. Help!

Posted: 04 Apr 2017 04:10 AM PDT

So I just started playing but because of the event a friend helped me level fast. I've decided to tank and I'm an Argonian DK to get healing received n stuff.... and lizard folk are just cool as. Anyway my question is... What is some good advice for new tanks, and what are some beginner tanking sets that I could use to be decent until I get "the good stuff." Just hit 50.

Newbie needing a little advice!

Posted: 04 Apr 2017 03:59 AM PDT

Me and my roommate are downloading the game and we'll group together most of the time. A few questions while we are waiting:

1) She plays a bow character in most games but never very well. Is ranged hard (long rotation, good timing required, etc.) in ESO? Is NB the class to go?

2) I'm interested in a staff DPS character, but not sure if I should main a tank instead. Are tanks hard to find when grouping with random players? I've played MMOs where two DPS had to queue for hours to get into a dungeon, and I'm just wondering if that's the case with ESO.

3) ESO seems to offer lots of flexibility in character builds, but is everyone forced to min-max in the end? For example, are there any DN healers with bad race choice doing fine with end game content (don't know much about classes so the example may not be appropriate)?

Thanks!!

No torches? Am I the only one that thinks the game needs torches?

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 09:56 PM PDT

I know there is an emote for one, but as soon as you move it disappears. Since there is an emote for one, how hard would it be to add a torch in game(we can actually use) that our character can pull in those dark places where there is little light?

Come developers - you call this a TES game and yet we don't even have a simple torch we can use in game.

Are the vampire/werewolf hunters still a thing on consoles?

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 05:25 PM PDT

I want to try and get the diseases in a couple of toons the old fashioned way, by waiting for the bloodfiends/werewolves to spawn and let them attack me, but recently learned that packs of players like to run the zones and kill them to keep bite prices up (which it's stupid people charge for it anyway)

I know this was an issue when the game came out, and I heard they changed the infection chance to 100% to combat it. I just want to know before I try, do people still do this?

Tanking Rakkat: The Hulk

Posted: 03 Apr 2017 10:52 PM PDT

I'm main tanking in a group of vMoL newbies. At this point my offtank and I have a handle on pretty much all of the tank mechanics in vMoL except the Hulk on Rakkat. We know that the Hulk shatters armor and that too much shatter = bad, so at some point the main tank needs to take the hulk for a bit then the off tank takes him back. Simple in theory; thus far it has been tricky in execution.

Could I get some tips on the right way to handle this? Specific questions (will also take general advice):

  • At what point should the main tank taunt the Hulk? After the first shatter on the offtank? After the second? Sometime in between?
  • The second shatter generally seems to happen in the middle of a mechanic (barrage or meteor). Should I be waiting until that mechanic is over before taunting or do I taunt while the mechanic is going on?
  • I've usually had aggro when I move to the next pad. At what point should the off tank retaunt the hulk?
  • How much wiggle room is there in the timing?
  • Does the main tank taunt the hulk a second time before it goes back to the offtank?

The problems we're seeing are:

  • I don't taunt the hulk quickly enough and the off tank dies. Obviously bad.
  • I have aggro on the hulk when Rakkat ports to the next pad, which pushes Rakkat out of position.
  • The hulk ignores the offtank's taunt when he takes the Hulk back from me. I'm unsure if this is causing by overtaunting, us being stupid, or some weird glitch.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated because then we'll be able to kill the bloody thing.
