[SPOILERS] (BotW) Eventide Island is an amazing microcosm of the full game

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 11:05 PM PDT

When you get down to it, the idea of the game is that you start with nothing, and in a roundabout way, everything you're doing is familiarizing yourself with your surroundings, and preparing for the fight with Ganon.

Eventide Island is the miniature thesis of that. You have nothing, this place is mysterious, and you know basically from the outset that you'll have to fight a Hinox to complete your objective.

Eventide is literally a condensed version of the full game, and it's amazing. By the end of it, you know the island like the back of your hand. You collect materials, you cook to prepare, you save your best equipment for the moment of truth if you can.

It's such a humbling moment, to see the entirety of the game laid out in such a small space. Even if a Hinox is a passing annoyance or an easy method for decent equipment or parts by the time you get to Eventide, it's a legit threat when you have to scavenge for a means to defeat it.

I love this game for so many reasons, but Eventide is a big part of the reason I'll remember it.

[PSA][SPOILERS][BotW] Killing Ganon early has more effects on your game than commonly discussed.

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 01:22 AM PDT

Today, I was exploring Hyrule Castle and found my way to the Sanctum. I had only killed one of the Divine Beast Ganon bosses, but I decided to take a crack at Ganon anyway, since I had the Master Sword.

I won.

I Googled around to see if this brand new star next to my save did anything, and people were saying that all it really did was add a completion meter to the map.

This is NOT the case. Killing Ganon permanently changes mob spawns and weapon drops. Assuming what I found about number of Divine Beast kills changing what spawns and drops, killing Ganon early makes mobs and weapons drop like you have killed all four Blight Ganons.

The way I figured this out is that after killing Ganon I found myself in the Lake Hylia islands, finding the shrine in the crater in the center island. The mobs around it were mostly silver-colored, dropping Royal gear with Durability Up. My brother played later today and visited the same area. He had only killed one Blight Ganon as well, but had not killed Ganon. He only found low-level mobs there, dropping crap gear.

TL;DR Killing Ganon makes the game's spawns act like you killed every Blight Ganon, which means higher level mobs/drops.

[botw] I really like how there are so many NPC designs

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 06:18 AM PDT

I'm probably wrong, but it seems like they don't double up NPC designs? If they do, they did a really good job of making it subtle enough for me to not notice. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in video games. Pokemon is the worst about this... 3 identical, completely unrelated dudes within the same room. Ughhhh so immersion breaking.

Dude treks his way up north with the simple order of "expand" and decides to build his own village from the ground up. Ends up with a hot gerudo wife, a full village, and the best town music in the game. Does it go to his head? Of course not.

Post more appreciation below.

[BOTW][SPOILERS] Let's dispel this fiction that Breath of the Wild lacks enemy variety...

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 01:36 AM PDT

... You've got Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Keese, Chu-Chus, Wizzrobes, Octoroks, Pebblits, Lynels, Taluses, Wolves, Bears, Stalfos, Yiga Footsoldiers, Yiga Blademasters, Molduga, and Hinox.

Not to mention that each of these have different types, either elemental or more and more difficult varieties, each of which have their own separate AI patterns and difficulty in fighting that isn't just an increased healthbar. A fight with a White Bokoblin, which eventually is a basic overworld enemy found in almost every camp you encounter, becomes a daunting endeavour even in the late-game.

This is before considering the multitude of Guardian types. You have the four mini-guardian types, the Stalkers, the Decayed Guardians, the Skywatchers, and the Turrets. AND then you have the five story bosses before Ganon, the final boss.

You encounter about 28 SPECIES of enemies over the course of the game. Then each of these species has many different varieties with different AI and attack patterns to learn and cope with.

Seriously, it's as if some people would rather that Nintendo have taken Green, Blue, Red, Yellow, and White Lizalfos, and just made each one a differently modeled enemy type. Does it really make a difference?

I'd just like to say that if you go back and look at Wind Wakers enemy types, you've got about 25 basic species of enemy, and seven unique bosses, giving you 32 enemy types over the game. Only FOUR more than Breath of the Wild.

Let's dispel, once and for all, this fiction that Breath of the Wild lacks enemy variety. Far from it, indeed.

[BotW][Spoilers] My View on the Central Narrative

Posted: 28 Mar 2017 08:15 PM PDT

So I've seen some mixed opinions on the story the game presents. Might just be preferential differences, might be that getting the full picture requires really getting out there and seeing everything the game has to offer when it comes to lore and information regarding what happened, might even be that some people haven't sat down and let it all digest.

I personally enjoyed the story, it's one of the most gripping compared to the past Zelda games. People tend to focus on Ganon, but that's not the real focus of the story. It's not about an ancient evil that the hero must rise up and vanquish like every other 3D Zelda title.

BotW's about a society that grew far too comfortable. They knew nothing about their ancient traditions and knowledge besides what they could scrounge up from the dirt around them. They forced people into roles that were historically roles people just grew into over time. We then see the most catastrophic failure Hyrule has ever known. Ganon returns and uses their foolish naivety against them. It's a total slaughter. The only ones safe from the onslaught are those that lived far enough away to survive it despite its gradual spread. In the end, we don't see a victorious Princess and her appointed Knight. We see the hero fall to mortal wounds on the very edge of death, and the princess sealing both herself and Ganon for 100 years. It's not a story of rising up against evil and successfully stopping it before it spreads. It's a story about burden, regret, and redemption. The redemption of two people who failed to live up to the roles they were forced into, only to grow into them long after it mattered most. It's a tragic tale, and it makes me love this iteration of Zelda and Link the most. You're not on a mission to save everyone you love from death, you already failed that task. You're just setting out to finally finish what you started.
