| Where DayZ fails (missing animations/body language) Posted: 28 Mar 2017 10:39 PM PDT Remember bandits from the mod? As flawed as that system was, it succeeded in one thing: telling you something about the story of that character. The reason why he killed other players wasn't clear. Was it self-defense? Was he a ruthless murderer? You never knew. But the notion that the status could not be hidden came into play. So here are a few ideas I think are missing from DayZ. EVERY STATUS SHOULD BE VISIBLE TO OTHER PLAYERS
Imagine you're in Kami in the dead of night and some guy walks by. You see his hands shaking, when he's idle he crosses his arms over his body trying to retain the heat, you hear him breathe like he's freezing. He doesn't need to say "I am freezing, I am shaking". You can tell what's happening just by looking at him. Of course sound helps: teeth chattering, stomach growling, different breathing patterns (for cold and hot). Although kind of silly, the Kuru laugh is a step in this direction. Remember the limping animations that were shown years ago? I need the animations to reflect which limb was affected and the type of injury sustained (sprained ankle, fractured leg, arm shot broke, etc). Also imagine how the team dynamics will change when these animations are implemented.
As much as we rely on body language (like when someone is acting "sketchy") I realize the faces in Dayz don't get much attention. Other than mouths moving when the mic is activated there's not much more. So how about changing the textures and expressions on faces to show healthy/in pain/sick status? You run into a guy in the middle of nowhere and his skin is kinda green, he has big dark circles under his eyes and he has a bandage on his leg. That tells you something.
Cause of death should be visible. If a character died because of a melee attack I want to see the textures reflect that. They should also reflect the weapon used (axe, zombie punches, etc). If the player got shot I want to see the bullet holes and blood on that part of the body. Part of this system is already in place: when a player gets shot the textures of that item (e.g. jacket) will change to ruined. THERE IS AN ANIMATION FOR EVERY ACTION I was never a big fan of standing right in front of a door and opening it with my mind. Or that in order to get into a vehicle I would need to have a quick fade to black transition. How about having an animation in which the character puts his hand on the knob to open the door? Below are two points that really bug me.
If I'm stalking a group as a sniper or hiding in bushes I want to be able to see what they are up to. I want to see the two items in their hands when they are crafting a new item. Even if you give us a standard crafting animation (just like the medical/bandaging animation) it's fine. But you can't just craft by dragging and dropping/right click, coin sounds and boom, item crafted instantaneously. Imagine you're a fresh spawn in Elektro. You're running around, you see a bunch of dead people around but no melee/bullet wounds. Then you turn a corner and you see a dude pouring gas into a canteen.
I'm sure many people won't like this but I need a looting animation. The character needs to kneel/lie next to a body, take the backpack off and make some hand movement over the dead body. And the items taken should be visible for a moment. No more sidestep dancing over a body to get the items as quickly as possible and not get shot. There must be some risk involved. I realize some of these ideas may seem controversial or that some can't be implemented because of the engine limitations but I'd like to read some of your thoughts. TL,DR: Every status (healthy/sick/hurt) should be perceivable to other players through animations, textures and sounds. [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 28 Mar 2017 11:19 AM PDT People love to hate on DayZ for all its missed timelines. And sure, the devs do deserve some shit for it. But like Star Citizen, I feel something unique is coming along with this game. Where is the DayZ killer? How many have come and gone? What are the games that took DayZ's playerbase? Were you a coastal KOS player-hunter fan? You're probably playing H1Z1 KOTK or PLAYERUNKNOWN's new game. Were you someone that liked wandering and setting up camps... but really missed minecraft? You're probably playing Rust or Ark.Did you want mechanics depth regardless of graphics and a hardcore survival experience? Project Zomboid, Rimworld or The Long Dark.I take very long breaks from DayZ... but overall I think it will occupy a unique niche for quite awhile in my gaming library. Alternatives welcome though. If a true dayZ killer came along I would play the shit out of it. [link] [comments] | ||
| I haven't played in about two years, what's new? Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:24 AM PDT Hi all, I haven't played for a good few years now. I had thousands of hours playing the mod, but dropped off after the alpha was released. What sort of things have changed since then? Any major game play changes or map alterations? Would I be able to easily download and jump back in or is there going to be another big learning curve? Thanks [link] [comments] | ||

| Does anyone else play DayZ, in part, because you love the outdoors but cant get out as much IRL? Posted: 28 Mar 2017 09:52 AM PDT I was just sitting outside, enjoying the day, when I realized how much I love the outdoors. I've spent so much of my life out in the woods, on the beaches or in the mountains. But as I have got older in my years, some physical injuries and a few mental ones have caused me to not be able to enjoy the outdoors as much as I used to. And I have noticed that I get some bit of satisfaction from DayZ, in the respect that it's as close as I can get to being outdoors when I can't leave my house.. or even my bed. My question is, has anyone else noticed this also about themselves? Does anyone else out there play dayz, love the outdoors, and also has some physical issue where they simply cant get outside as much as they would like to? I would love to hear your stories, if there are anyone of you out there like me.. older than your years, body falling apart at the seams, but your mind is still 10 years old and wants to play outside all day, and somehow you get a tiny bit of satisfaction from playing dayz when you can't. :)

| Wouldn't mod support be beneficial for the devs? Posted: 29 Mar 2017 02:23 AM PDT What really makes me wonder is why the devs hasn't allowed mod-support yet. Hardcore fans with some coding skills would be able to add features or fix bugs that would possibly make the game better, and finish the game faster. The devs could cherry pick the mods that they like and add to the base game. I do not have the knowledge of game development and dont really know how hard it is to add mod support, but i imagine that it wouldn't be that hard, would it? I understand that different servers would have many different combinations of mods, which would make switching between servers much harder, but is that really a big problem? [link] [comments] | ||
| What are the promises and deadlines we keep talking about? Posted: 28 Mar 2017 03:48 PM PDT If you read any discussion on the internet relating to DayZ, there are always comments about broken promises and deadlines. Seems like we're all convinced the devs are liars. The closest thing to a promise I can recall is when Rocket spoke publicly that he was very confident the alpha would be released at a certain date. Then the scope of the project changed completely (instead of packaging up the mod into a standalone they'd be building a new engine on which all future ARMA titles would also be based), which pushed back the initial release date quite a lot. Apart from that, I remember a few rough estimates from some devs when they were pressed in social media. Some of these turned out to be wrong, but they were hardly promises, deadlines or even official statements from the company. After the public reaction, they've been very careful not to mention anything relating to time at all. But have I got the story straight? Have there actually been official promises and deadlines I missed which were broken? [link] [comments] | ||
