The Legend of Zelda - 16 days left! 16 Zelda games remain! Let's discuss: A Link to the Past

16 days left! 16 Zelda games remain! Let's discuss: A Link to the Past

Posted: 14 Feb 2017 09:40 PM PST

At the start of the last decade of the millennium, the Zelda series returned to the overhead view and gameplay style of the original game, in one of its most succesful entries. This was the one that brought the Master Sword to the lore, the first one with a new Link as protagonist, and the one that introduced the concept of two different worlds to the series... and the cuccos!

In this thread we discuss all the previous Zelda games, one per day until we finally get to explore the world of Breath of the Wild.

5 simple questions about each game!

1. Your favorite aspect of the game? (Replay value, music, gameplay, characters, the world)

2. Favorite Dungeon.

3. That one song in the game everyone should listen to.

4. The quote, moment or cutscene that stuck in your head.

5. Why should anyone play this game?

Let's travel to the Dark World! Let's discuss The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)

Lon Lon Ranch...

Posted: 15 Feb 2017 02:53 AM PST

Hi there.

I first played Ocarina of Time about 18 years ago.

I've beaten it several times since then.

I'm almost 30 years old.

And yet, I only just realized, while staring out of a train window on the way home today... Ta-Lon... Ma-Lon... Lon Lon Ranch... My... God...

Also, the Majora's Mask cartridge I ordered arrived today, hooray :) been thinking about it since Theophany released the second Time's End album recently and had to get my hands on a copy, cannot wait to give this a play through!

We are being given 4 years of 300+ people's hard work for $60 and people want to complain when they ask for $20 for even more.

The value of this stuff is ridiculous. It is absolutely worth the money. You pay $15 for a shitty movie you'll only watch once!!

Please people... DLC is good!

Downvote me to oblivion but I don't care. I just want to put my opinion out there on how close minded people are. This is by no means a mediocre game. 300+ km² map, 100+ shrines, 70+ side quests, a fuck ton of collectibles and a story quest line worthy of the Zelda brand. That's only on the base game. For only 20 extra bucks(Witcher 3 expansions were 25 each) you get immediate rewards and extra content for the rest of the year. And if it sells well, we might get even more content for years to come. Smash Bros 4 gave us a lot of maps and characters behind DLC. Mario kart 8 gave us 8 new tracks and new racers for 12 bucks. I will gladly pay 20 bucks per year for extra zelda original content, and you don't have to buy it right away if you don't feel it's worth it. But I can almost assure you once you finish the game you will be wanting more.

Smallest BOTW detail you're impressed from?

Posted: 15 Feb 2017 06:42 AM PST

For me, I saw a video where if there's weapon that's caught on fire lying around enemies will use it to light their own weapons. Small details like that make the world feel alive for me.

Also sorry, I forget the video it's from...

Let's just wait and see what the DLC actually is before dismissing it out of hand.

I have faith based on what they did with MK8. I agree that the first part of it seems a bit light, but we don't know. Personally I think it's better that we're given the choice than there not being any DLC in the first place.

I made extremely high resolution Zelda posters with the new artwork. They look great even if you print them at 24x36 inches. Download link in comments!

I'm sure tons of people are going to be doing this, but here's my emblem in "For Honor."

Am I the only person Happy that there's dlc coming?

Posted: 14 Feb 2017 06:23 PM PST

Nintendo gave us cloud in smash. They gave us link in Mario kart. I can't be the only one who likes the dlc for those games so much that I was sad when they said they were done making it.

Assuming botw dlc is on that level (and there's no reason to expect otherwise) I hope that they keep making content even after the first season pass is finished. Just please keep making awesome content like that and I'll be happy to pay for it.

I can't be the only person who feels like this right?

I had never played a Zelda game in my life until yesterday.

Posted: 14 Feb 2017 11:53 PM PST

Some friends of mine and myself were participating in a business competition and we stayed in a hotel room for a couple days. On the first day, one of my friends pull out an NES Classic Edition saying that he got lucky and got one. We decided to make it our mission to beat some of these games before the end of the competition. I had known about The Legend of Zelda series since I was a kid through friends or Super Smash Brothers. However, I have never played a single one. Knowing nothing, we started it up and got instantly hooked into finding all of the parts of the tri-force. We also set a goal for ourselves to not use a single guide throughout the entire game and play it the way it was originally made. Each painful death at a time, we had moved quite far through the game. Sadly, we did not complete our goal of finishing the game. Now though, I am determined to beat this game and continue through each game in the series. Fantastic music and fantastic art style and gameplay brought me back each day. I look forward to finding out about this game I had never tried and just thought "f*** it let's try this game". I write this now in order to help remind the members of this community their earliest memories of this game and the good feelings from playing it. I am excited for my first steps into this series and this reddit community :)

Can you start exploring the Great Sea before or after you beat the Tower of the Gods?

Posted: 15 Feb 2017 07:46 AM PST

I can't remember if the game would keep you on the one route past that.

I know at least you couldn't do it until you'd gotten two of the pears.

A Positive about the Season Pass for developers

Posted: 15 Feb 2017 01:42 AM PST

Reggie mentioned in a couple interviews that the reason third parties weren't willing to work with Nintendo last time was because it was difficult to monetize content after release.

Maybe having their mainline game have a Season Pass is a way to show those developers and publishers how they can do their Business on the Switch

I'm holding judgement towards the Zelda specific DLC until I've beaten the game and can try to tell if content was cut. That's the beauty of Nintendo Season Passes (like Hyrule Warriors) is they don't up the price later, its essentially a Bundle pre-order.

So hopefully, this was a big picture decision to show third parties they can do business as usual on the Switch, and give us fans more content while the devs don't have to stop working on this game they've dedicated Five Years to. Again Hopefully thats the case, until we have the game we wont know all the specifics

"Scary" enemies in Breath of the Wild?

Posted: 15 Feb 2017 09:50 AM PST

One thing I'm really excited to see in Breath of the Wild is how they will handle the scarier enemies. So for the only hints of this we've seen are the stalfos and lizstalfos (spelled right)? But those are tame compared to some of the other series regulars.

Some of my most memorable moments in Zelda games were with the spookier environments and atmospheres, and the freakish monsters. Re-deads and their mummified counterparts are one of my favorite enemies, and they scared the crap out of me as a kid! So far, to my knowledge, all of the 3D Zeldas have included these, so I'm curious to see what the Zelda team has come up with in this new installment. Remember the creepy re-deads with the swords in arbiters grounds in TP? I want to see that. Remember the freakish things under the well in OOT? Yeah baby. And don't even get me started about the stuff we saw in Ikana Canyon in MM. I feel like BotW's relatively music-less environment will be perfect for creating some really creepy moments. It's going to be a blast.
