Minecraft has never been more interesting for me

Posted: 12 Feb 2017 01:22 PM PST

Lately I've been seeing a lot of doomsday posts about how Minecraft is dead or how everyone is losing interest in the game. I figured I'd make the opposite post and explain why I've never enjoyed Minecraft more than I do today.

First off, some context on what type of player I am. If you read the Player archetype list I made a while back, I'm an Architect, a mega builder, and an industrialist. In other words, I build large farms to produce resources for me, and I spend those resources on large-scale aesthetically pleasing builds.

Why is that relevant? Well, let's look at the last few major releases:

  • 1.8:

Several new aesthetic blocks were released, including prismarine which very quickly became one of my favorite blocks. Ocean monuments are a massive task to automate, but they're worth it when they're done. The villager overhaul made villagers more useful, slime blocks opened up some new possibilities for automatic farms, and banner were added. Add onto that three new flavors of stone and new wood types for fences and the like and you have yourself a very solid builders update.

Now I have a reason to make farms for prismarine and rabbit's feet, and a stronger incentive to work with villagers.

  • 1.9:

A few new aesthetic blocks were added, most notably end rods, purpur and dragon heads. We also got Mending, which let me spend more time farming and building and less time repairing my tools. Sweep attacks also make mob farms a lot easier.

  • 1.10:

Bone blocks, magma blocks red nether brick and nether wart blocks were added. These have some of the best textures ever to reach Minecraft in my opinion. I also finally have a good reason to farm nether warts.

  • 1.11:

Shulker boxes and elytra boosting are game changing. Shulker boxes let you carry around an insane amount of items, especially if you put them in your ender chest.

  • 1.12:

We asked for a building update, and as far as I can tell, we got one. We got something like 48 new blocks, they made stained clay and wool easier to work with, and they did so while letting cyan stained clay keep that wonderful shade of gray.

In the last five major releases, I've been given several amazing aesthetic blocks to play with, and many of them require a dedicated farm to produce in the quantities I need. I love being in that position, because it gives me a fun challenge with a great reward.

Outside of aesthetics and farms, 1.9's combat overhaul made fighting mobs more challenging and gave some new life to a combat system I had grown a bit tired of.

The enchantment overhaul polished a system that I thought felt messy and new expensive.

Currently I'm playing with loot tables to create a skyblock-style adventure map. Soon I expect to learn commands and make more complex maps.

The modded scene is thriving, there are thousands of survival maps I have yet to explore with more coming every day, and subreddits like this and /r/feedthebeast act as a constant stream of new inspiration. I've barely scratched the surface of what servers can offer.

You may disagree, but this game has never been more interesting than it is today.

1.12 is a building update, you say? How about some new prismarine type blocks to fit the Elder Guardian?

It appears that 1.12 is going to be a building-oriented update, with the advent of concrete and terracotta, which appear to be geared towards the builders of Minecraft. With that said, allow me to propose another new construction material: Ancient Prismarine.

Basically, we have guardians. And we also have prismarine. They share an essentially identical colour scheme of a darkish aqua green, which is pretty nice. But then we have the elder guardian, which is a very different colour (off-white) to both the guardian and prismarine, and there is no special variant of prismarine that fits the elder guardian...

It's somewhat confusing, to say the very least. In my opinion, it's one of those obviously missing features. Remember when red sand was first added, and there was no red sandstone to accompany it? Or in a more extreme case, the iron nuggets? This is a pretty similar problem in my opinion.

So how would you get these blocks?

First, you will need to obtain Ancient Prismarine Shards. These will be dropped in substantial amounts (about half a stack, possibly ranging from 28-36) by elder guardians, and regular guardians will drop them instead of normal prismarine shards about 10% of the time.

  • Ancient Prismarine and Ancient Prismarine Bricks would be craftable as expected; just a 2x2 or 3x3 of them respectively.

  • For the corresponding "Dark Prismarine" variant, you would need 8 Ancient Prismarine Shards around 1 Light Grey Dye.

  • For the Ancient Sea Lantern, you would craft this with 4 Ancient Prismarine Shards in each corner, and 5 Prismarine Crystals in the normal plus shape.

A few other things:

  • There could be a 1 in 1000 chance that any ocean monument could instead generate using these blocks, and instead of 8 gold blocks in the treasure room there would be 8 diamond blocks.

  • The Ancient Sea Lantern's animation could be reversed from the original, with the circle shrinking inwards instead of expanding outwards (suggested by /u/haykam821 )
