Let's talk about the new wool

Posted: 09 Feb 2017 12:23 PM PST

DISCLAIMER: Please don't vote or comment until you have read my arguments.

The Problem: First of all, we LOVE the new colors, but there is a problem we (as a build team) have run into. Our builds, which previously relied on the old wool/carpet colors, no longer blend well in areas including each. We have already found some areas in our builds which now have dropped quite significantly in quality with the change.

I have taken pictures of these areas if you would like to see: Imgur Album

Edit: Blending comparison

The changes may look slight at first, but once you give it a good look you can't unsee it. These 5 blocks are really the root of the problem at least for me. These are the most common blending techniques used. Though similarly the new also have good blending combinations in their own right, which is why I am against getting rid of them either.

Wool has been in the game for many years now, and numerous builds have been made with the old colors. While not all may change too drastically, it will negatively impact the way many builds look.

One of the most drastic changes I and many others have noticed is the combination of white and light gray wool, which is used in various buildings and structures. They now do not pair well at all, with no other alternatives available.

I understand that this is just a snapshot right now, but I wanted to get my point across before it could no longer be changed.

The Divide: I have previously made a post regarding the topic, and from what I've seen, there is quite a clear divide. There are roughly 50 votes both in support and against the ideas I put forth regarding the change. But to put it simply, it would be very advantageous for everyone if we could come to a compromise. At this point it's either ~50% of players are completely content with the changes, and the rest will suffer, or ~100% of players are content with the changes (not taking into account the minority of players who hate all changes no matter what they are).

The Solutions: Me, and many other people have thought up ideas which can benefit the entire community, and leave all players happy.

Llama wool: Read about it here

Creative menu only: Even though a majority of players do like the new wool, it would be bad to remove the old wool textures that many have relied on for years. The new wool should be given a different ID/Blockstate, and the old should be left in the game, accessible by the creative menu. This would leave old builds with wool colors they were made to have, and giving many more options for players to build with in creative mode.

Having more types of wool: The old colors can stay in the game alongside the new. Many of the colors have changed a lot, nearly to new colors. The new cyan is more of a Teal, and the new light light blue is more of a Turquoise, to name a few. Distinguishing these colors while keeping the old would open a whole new color pallet into the game, allowing for much more detailed builds, and beautiful gradients.

Cotton/Spider Silk Wool: The new colors seem to be more pure, which is why I believe they should be acquired differently. Perhaps through a new plant, cotton, which can be grown and converted into the new wool variants, or crafted from spider silk/string, prompting more players to use that method to get wool they want.

Dye-able Wool: Make the wool dye-able like like leather armor. I do understand that adding this would be difficult, but it would be a great addition for map makers and pixel artists, along with builders.

Edit:

Double Dying: Read about it here

Counter-arguments: Here are various arguments many people have brought up refuting all these ideas. If you planned to comment something we bring up here, please refrain from doing so unless you have a valid counter to what we say.

"Just use a resource pack": While this would fix the problem on single player, many buildteams including our own create builds for a variety of servers and networks. We cannot force them or their players to use the resource pack. Our build quality would drop, and we would be less appealing as a buildteam, even if only slightly. Because the new wool looks so much more vibrant, a lot of creative detailing and combinations using the old wool are no longer possible. (Check the imgur link above)

Along with this, there are new possibilities we can have with the new wool. Unfortunately, at this present time, having them means getting rid of the old possibilities. Having both would be the best thing for creativity.

"Use an alternative block": Nearly all wool has no good alternative. If they did, this would not be such an issue. Not to mention, there are no good alternatives at all for carpet, which has the same problem now.

"They look similar": Even slight changes can have a drastic effect. With different colors, blending between blocks and wool no longer fits as it did previously. (Check the imgur link above)

"I like the new wool": As previously stated, so do we. And we don't think it should be removed. The new colors bring about new building possibilities, but it shouldn't be at the cost of many other ones.

"Stay in previous versions of Minecraft": For many players and builders who wish to stay up to date with Minecraft updates, this is not a valid possibility. Along with this, buildteams have to cater to servers and networks that commission them, and if those servers are in version 1.12 or greater, than they will only be restricted, and quality will drop.

Thanks for reading: I know it was a long post, but I wanted to address everything people have been saying regarding the new changes to wool.

I ask you all please to keep the comments peaceful, as we are not trying to start fights. Thank you everyone.

TL;DR: We think the new wool colors are awesome, but the change has too drastic of an effect on older builds. Instead, we should have both types in some form, so all players are happy, and no builds are affected.

Edit: I'm seeing that this post is getting a lot of downvotes, though I don't see why. If you are downvoting this, please express your opinion on what I have to say, and why you are downvoting. Otherwise I will just have to assume you did not bother reading my post. Thank you :)
