Free Talk Friday - February 17th

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 01:28 AM PST

Ayy what's good y'all! After a week long hiatus we're back to the normal FTF threads with your boy IcyColdStare at the helm.

How's everyone's week been? Anything in particular you've done this week/doing this weekend that you're excited about? Let's hear it!

(Quick aside: you don't have to talk only League here - anything goes [within reason, yo])

I've been trying to pick up some champs lately, namely Akali, Katarina and Warwick - they're pretty fun! Especially WW top, it's surprisingly good. just ask scarra

Anywho, you guys and gals know how this all goes. Talk shop, keep things clean and as always, have a good weekend fam!

Remember SpectateFaker? Now SKT T1 is filing DMCAs on YouTube over IN-GAME REPLAY footage (NOT Twitch Streams highlights)

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 11:31 AM PST

This is an edit proposed by /u/Goetheee. One of the mods offered to reapprove my most if I edited my original thread to his version so here it is!

Ever since SKT T1 has had it's league of legends players stream on Twitch they have started to take down videos that include SKT T1 players (like Faker or Peanut). Which means if you're a content creator that happen to have one of the players playing in your video you have a high chance of getting a copyright strike, and if you get 3 of those your channels gets taken down.

HERE is clear evidence of what they are doing, claiming copyright of MONTHS OLD VIDEOS that they have NO right to do in the first place. One of the videos they copyright striked was from when Faker was in NA, which is over 3 MONTHS OLD.

How on earth were content creators supposed to know that SKT T1 were going to transfer to Twitch and then claim every single video where SKT T1 players are playing?

From what I've read and understood SKT T1 doesn't have the rights to DMCA a in-game replay footage because that's something Riot owns. However SKT staff that messaged me claims that Riot Games (and that's a quote):

officially stated that actions to gain profit by making video contents of any teams' players are prohibited.

and also

Riot Games acknowledged that SKT T1 has the copyright over its players' spectate videos.

Is this true? Even in statement about SpectateFaker fiasco we can read that "DMCA issued by Azubu did not have a legal standing as we, not Azubu, own the gameplay content". There's also Riot's guideliness regarding use of their IP and they don't mention ANYTHING about using any players' or teams' in-game footage, names or photos. Did Riot Games hand over their copyright rights to SKT T1? If so, why didn't they say anything? I'm sure content creators would be fine with this but now they are at RISK of LOSING THEIR CHANNELS and INCOME for videos they created months ago.

HERE is a message a content creator received from the official worker for SKT. The person wrote:

Hello, this is *** who is in charge of SKT T1 Videos Copyrights. I am here to inform you about your illegal usages of SKT T1's copyrights.

Not only SKT T1's copyrights include its emblems and its players' photos, but also they include the players' highlight/montage videos, streams, and any other VODs related to SKT T1. Even the Riot Games, who has the control over fan-created League of Legends contents, officially stated that actions to gain profit by making video contents of any teams' players are prohibited. We already requested Riot Games copyright protection for all SKT T1's spectate videos. Also, Riot Games acknowledged that SKT T1 has the copyright over its players' spectate videos.

Moreover, your actions violate Republic of Korea's Right of Publicity and copyright laws. If you continue to create and upload more videos of SKT T1, we inform you that the law can take legal actions against your actions. Therefore, we ask you to delete the remaining videos of SKT T1's player. If you do not delete the video until this week, Riotgames will take action directly.

I have no problem with respecting SKT T1's request to not make any videos related to them even though such request alone is totally bullshit. (EDIT: And just because one of you guys called me out for this statement - it's the same situation as where you don't agree with ceratin law but you're still not gonna break it, right?) I just want to get clarification on this DMCA. Can some Rioter explain what's going on?

Varus is not OP. It is lethality items that should be getting the nerfs.

Posted: 16 Feb 2017 09:14 PM PST

Varus has remained relatively unchanged in the meta for quite some time. Everyone is crying how he is so OP and broken yet nothing has changed for him. Yeah, he got some buffs recently to his passive but that has no affect on his current state in the meta since no one is using him as an AA adc. Varus is meta now because lethality and its items are both OP. Especially after the buffs to the stat. Not only that, but the items all work pretty well with his kit taking away some of his obvious weaknesses like lack of mobility or squishiness, all with low active cooldowns.

Meddler has mentioned they are looking to nerf Varus and Edge of Night in 7.5 but why are you gonna nerf the champion and his items when Egde of Night is clearly one of the worst offenders in OP items right now. The way I see, Varus is gonna get nerfed to take him out of the meta. Then his core items will be nerfed to make him useless and unplayable. Then he will be forgotten and stay out of the meta until he gets reworked.

Sound familiar? That is exactly what happened to Sejuani with Cinderhulk. She has been out of the meta for long time and getting reworked this summer. I don't want Varus reworked. I don't want Varus to be the new Sejuani. His kit is fine and he is balanced. A good majority of the games I watch with him, he doesn't even do that great. He can't even solo carry like most of the broken champs can right now.

If anything, Riot should just hold out on nerfing Varus until they actually balance the lethality items and see how he does then. As a Varus main that has been playing him since season 4 with over half a million mastery points on him, I know that he is not the actual problem. I just want Riot to see that insead of getting all trigger happy on killing him.

TL;DR Varus was and still is balanced. It is lethality items that are making him seem OP. That is the real problem.

The average gold value gained per level is 532.91 (with math)

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 08:08 AM PST

EDIT: The title is wrong. After fixing two calculation errors pointed out by /u/SometimesMainSupport and /u/beeceedee9, the average gold value gained per level is actually 584.58. After fixing these errors, some of the comments made about specific champions may quote slightly different gold values, although the champ-to-champ comparisons made will still hold. Carry on.

I've heard before that the gold value of the stats you get when leveling up is around 500 gold, and I was curious how accurate that was for all champs across the board. So, I used the Riot Static API to get the per-level stat increases for each champion, did a calculation of the gold value of those stat increases (using these numbers for most stats, and the flat regen values for HP and Mana), and then averaged out all of the results.

You can check my code here (it's JavaScript), but the TL;DR is that, averaged across champions, you gain 584.58 gold worth of stats every time you level up.

If you want to know exactly how much gold value you get on your favorite champion, I posted the champion-specific numbers for you below:
