Heroes of the Storm - I just wanted WoW mount, but I really like the game!

I just wanted WoW mount, but I really like the game!

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 10:14 AM PST

Hello!

I don't know if anyone of you cares, but I just wanted to share this with someone who knows this game. I just wanted to say that I downloaded and installed this game just to get WoW mount but surprisingly, I really like the game!

I really like how easy is to get into the game without any prior knowledge when compared to WoW. I've never been into MOBA, the last one I played was DotA back when it was just a map for WC3. After such a long time, it was hard for me to control hero with click-to-move but I got into it after a moment. I still don't understand those special events on certain maps, like fighting one of those 2 big guys so the other one can help us, but I'm slowly learning. Another thing I really like is how fast-paced the games are. Things happen so fast, lanes are pretty short and map is squashed down to the size of bigger arena.

So far, I've only played against AI because I am afraid of jumping into the battle with other players but I am looking forward to it.

Are there also other players which avoided this game for no particular reason and now like it?

Alarak is indisputably underperforming. Here's why.

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 09:52 AM PST

It's an unpopular opinion that Alarak is bad, needs buffs, or is in any way worse than other heroes. He feels good to play, he's flashy, and he stomps... when playing against worse players than yourself.

These stomps reinforce the image that Alarak is actually really good. He punishes players that are (significantly) worse than the Alarak player. When playing Hero League, or even competitive, against equal players, however, he can't do this at all.

(All data in this post was taken from HotsLogs.)

His winrate, across ALL leagues, is among the lowest.

Alarak's win rate across all leagues is 45.1%, 3rd lowest of all excluding Cho'Gall.

Alarak's win rate in Bronze is 36.7%, 2nd lowest of all excluding Cho'Gall.

Alarak's win rate in Master is somewhat better at 48.0%, 8th lowest of all excluding Cho'Gall, but still low.

A character that is often compared to Alarak is Kerrigan. They both punish poor positioning, have a "combo" of sorts, can sustain themselves and require skillful play to execute. Kerrigan's win rates:

All leagues: 53.0%, 9th highest of all heroes.

Bronze: 48.3%, 10th highest of all heroes.

Master: 61.2%, the highest win rate of all heroes.

"He requires skill to be played, good players shine with him!"

This is true to an extent, but even very good players would rather play other heroes rather than Alarak, since the reward for playing Alarak perfectly is not as high as other heroes.

Rich can be argued to be one of the best Heroes players out there. He was generally feared as an Alarak player: Alarak is very good against worse players.

Let's compare Rich' win rates of his best heroes in Hero League. His top 9 most played heroes (40+ games played) ordered by win rate are:

Thrall (80.4%), Kael'thas (80.0%), Leoric (78.4%), Kerrigan (76.5%), Sonya (75.0%), Illidan (73.6%), Zeratul (72.1%), Muradin (71.4%), and finally Alarak (70.6%).

Rich has very high win rates with all his heroes, including Alarak, because he plays insanely well. However, Alarak is still at the bottom here, simply because the reward you get for playing Alarak well is not as high as the reward for playing Kerrigan or Illidan for example. He underperforms for the top players, as well.

Alarak punishes players that play poorly. Kerrigan also punishes players that play poorly: however, she can also hold her own against players of similar skill, unlike Alarak.

"But he is the best solo laner!"

For a while, it seemed like Alarak was one of the very best solo laners. This was simply because he countered Chen and Thrall, however, the two most popular solo laners at the time.

However, now, the following heroes beat Alarak in lane:

Reworked Sonya. Gul'dan. Dehaka. Arguably Arthas. Reworked Artanis. Leoric. Zagara.

He's a decent solo laner, but by no means the strongest. Artanis should be able to beat anyone that Alarak can, and nobody is complaining Artanis is absolutely overpowered as a solo laner as well as a team fight monster (after his latest rounds of nerfs).

"This melee heavy meta does not favor Alarak! That's why he has a low win rate!"

The melee heavy meta would also disfavour Kerrigan. Yet Kerrigan has a very high win rate: metas generally do not have an extreme impact on win rate.

TL;DR Alarak is much weaker than other heroes, and is outclassed in nearly every way by other heroes. He underperforms in the hands of pro players, he underperforms in Master Hero League, he underperforms in general. He has a flashy playstyle and punishes players much worse than you in a very obvious way, but this is true of nearly all heroes. Kerrigan punishes worse players better than Alarak. Alarak is weak.

The regional system is simply unacceptable. Blizzard needs to do something about it ASAP.

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 04:18 PM PST

Yeah, I know, another of those posts. But hear me out.

Story time: I started playing HoTS back when it was in beta and I loved it. I used to live in EU back then and spent a hefty amount of money buying some skins and heroes. I didn't mind spending 10 euros+ per month for a game that I played easily 15-20 hours a week.

Fast forward around a year. I move to Asia. Lag is crazy in EU servers. I can't win any fights and people report me for feeding. I give up and switch regions. To my surprise, all my progress is gone. My gold, my heroes, my skins. Everything.

When I realized that I had to start all over again, I simply couldn't stand it and stopped playing for a few months. However, after a while I tried to accept the situation and started all over again. Eventually, I got a good amount of heroes. Everything was good again and I enjoyed the game like before (although I couldn't understand anything my team mates said, but that's another issue). My only rule was: do not buy anything with real money.

Fast forward again to these days. I move to USA for work, I try to play both in Asia or EU and there is no use, ping is way too high for the level of reaction I'm used to. I'm literally getting depressed to the thought of having to start again. I have played this game everyday for the past months and it was amazing, but now everything is ruined.

TLDR; I moved from EU to Asia and then to USA. I switched regions twice and I cannot stand the thought of starting the game all over again for my third time.

The problem: Purchases and progress does not move across regions. If you switch regions, you will have to start again from level 1 with no heroes or previous purchases.

Exceptions: I have noticed that certain items/heroes remain no matter in which region you play. Examples: WoW Mount (wolf from lvl100 achievement), Tracer from Overwatch (Origins Edition), the mount you get from buying something from the store, etc.

My proposed solution: Not only should we receive all the items purchased with either gold or real money, but also the character progression (account and heroes level). The only thing that should not be transferred is the League progression, so a warning pops up saying that any ranked progress will be lost if you transfer regions.

My thoughts about the current system: I cannot believe that a company like Blizzard assumes that all their clients will remain forever in one region and if you travel, then it's your problem. The proof that it can be solved can be seen in the "exceptions" that I mentioned earlier. If I can have Tracer in all the regions before I even play them, why the hell not all my other stuff? Not to mention that Overwatch allowed this system from the very beginning (including ranked). No matter where you play in Overwatch, your progress is always with you.

The reason why we have a digital system is for convenience. I love the game, but I hate having to stop playing it because the game itself doesn't allow me to play (if that makes any sense at all).

Also, since I switched to Asia I haven't spent a cent. I simply felt scammed and I didn't want to fall for it again, which means that Blizzard has easily lost at least $200 from me during all this time. Like I said, I loved getting skins and heroes, but I'm not willing to pay real money twice for them.

PS: By the way, I played a couple of games in my lvl1 US account and owned all the games I played. Obviously I was matched with newcomers and it was not fair for them, so I guess that's another point to take into consideration.

HotS jumps 10 positions in Korean PC Bangs!

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 02:36 PM PST

According to Gametrics, in January, HotS fell to the 26th place, but later rose to the 20th (use Google Translate).

Now, however, HotS has reached the 16th place! (link).

If you take a look at the screenshot, LoL has 81% of the RTS market share, while HotS 1.75%. Pretty sizable if you ask me.

Title. I have only been playing for short time, but it has been frustrating learning when to drop out of combat to heal. Finally figured things out today, and made it 100% of the match. A small victory.

Woohoo!

How about a Jet Set Radio Future skin for Lucio?

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 06:45 PM PST

Hi

Any fans of JSRF want to see some of its influence incorporated into a Lucio skin? Personally, would love to see my childhood reincarnated into a Lucio skin.

Some might say the Ribbit skin is somewhat JSRF-ish, but I find it to be more centered around the dubstep scene.

Murky's Talents Should Be Designed Like Alarak's

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 05:23 AM PST

I don't think he's ever going to feel balanced unless Blizzard starts scaling his respawn timer with the talents that make him more difficult to kill. Like Big Tuna Kahuna, taking any of those talents should increase his respawn timer by X seconds each. A Murky with assassin health that heals half of his life every 15 seconds should not be back in the same team fight or objective multiple times.

This would encourage players to diversify talent selections between his utility and survival, and he wouldn't be ever present with a build that completely erases his primary weakness.

Map Timings Cheat Sheet (Basic) Newplayer friendly

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 04:22 PM PST

I did a quick google but could not find a cheat sheet for map timings. I found plenty of websites with timings and strategies but nothing to quickly reference.

I made a very basic cheat sheet which my friends and I use. We are by no means great players but this serves to help us with planning movements, Fights and Base returns.

Figured it could help other new players :) It is nothing fancy and just uses a number of google sheets with each sheet referring to a map. Basic to look at and not very pleasing on the eyes!
