High School Star League (HSL) Hearthstone SCAM

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 08:00 AM PST

I'm the runner up of last year's HSL hearthstone tournament. After half a year of not receiving my prize money, I've decided to make this go public. After speaking with the winner of last year's tournament, it seems as if they have not received their prizes either. Through constant emails over the past months, I was told that the prize money was sent and to contact them if I had not received it. This had occurred twice now; the first time, I was told that there was no prize money and they had to retrieve it through "reallocation of money". After this was supposedly settled, I was informed that the money was sent. After waiting about a month, I sent them several emails throughout the wait asking for a cheque receipt in order to prove the cheque was actually sent since it normally takes 2 days for mail to be delivered. I have not received a reply since and I am quite convinced that I have been scammed of the prize money.

Top 10+1 Cards of the Week at /r/customhearthstone (18 Feb 2017), plus some other tidbits

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:22 AM PST

If you're here just for the album, here's the album.

If you wanna some more info, then read on.

"Who is this NullConstant impostor?! Where's /u/coolboypai?!"
Well, if you've been to the /r/customhearthstone subreddit (or our Discord), you may recognize me as /u/DarkDXZ, just under a new handle.
Pai'll be back, we promise.

In any case, we're still testing going with "top 10" rather than "top 5" cards, so let us know what you think about that.

We've been also considering reworking how our weekly contests work in general, since our current system (Reddit's contest mode) is...well, a little flawed to put it mildly, however the alternative that has been suggested to us (using a form to submit cards for a few days, then compiling all the entries into a public poll and determining the winner through that) is...well, cumbersome for us to set up on a weekly basis, but also for people voting, since we get 100-some entries on average by the time the contest ends.
So it's still up in the air and we may just end up sticking to what we've got right now.

Last week's top cards.

Anyone else rather play against Pirates then Jades?

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 08:53 PM PST

I can try and build an anti-aggro deck against pirates and after turn 5 you have a good idea if you won or lost.

Jade's on the other hand you watch mindless spamming of jades. Feel like I'm watching someone color in the lines playing a deck that builds itself.

What if Blizzard did a "Welcome Bundle" for each expansion?

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 10:47 AM PST

I get preorders. I preordered MSoG and was pretty happy about it (after clearing up that tri-card issue).

But what if.....to get new, or returning, or whatever, players interested in the new expansion, they did a welcome bundle for each?

I jumped on the welcome bundle for classic, even though I was already a devoted player.

It seems pretty cool, to me anyway. 10 packs. 5 bucks. One guaranteed legendary. One time purchase.

Thoughts?

Hearthstone Cost: 2016 vs 2017 (Including Rewards)

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 03:49 PM PST

I know there is a disdain for F2P but I think it is useful as a baseline to value any Hearthstone set. You may not want to grind 30 wins but many are reliant on daily quests and annual rewards Blizzard gives. As always, a job if more efficient then anything else but some like the challenge. So here is a F2P analysis of 2016 and a projection of 2017.

Max gold income per week (excluding Arena)

  • For a dedicated player who maxes 30 wins daily, re-rolls all quests, and completes Tavern Brawl each week you make up to 1,167.50g/week. (700g from wins, 367.5 from quests, and 1 Classic pack worth 100g)
  • You can make about 60,710g per year as a strictly F2P player with no life or pure Hearthstone in their veins. (30 wins per day...crazy)
  • Last year cost about 600 packs for Expansions (average of 300 packs to complete an Expansion), 28 packs for the Adventure (2800g), and a total cost of 62,800 gold. This year will be 900 packs with 3 Expansions for a total cost of 90,000 gold. 2017 will cost a baseline of 27,200 more gold then 2016.
  • End of Season Rewards is a HUGE variable here. From 55-550 dust per month. I'm going to assume Rank 5 for serious players is very doable especially with ladder changes. At Rank Five, 505 dust per month is 6,060 dust per year (5,894 gold per year).

Rewards Given in 2016

I think Blizzard is cognizant of how much they want their users grinding and paying each year. Whispers of the Old Gods was slightly more expensive then the average Expansion and the free packs, C'thun, and Beckoner offset it completely so it was in line with other Expansion prices.

And you can't discount the rewards we got this year. I might be forgetting some but:

  • For Whispers of the Old Gods there was C'Thun plus Beckoner of Evil, (totaling 410 dust) and 13 free packs with WOG (3/5/5),

  • For Mean Streets of Gadgetzan there were 6 free packs Mean Streets of Gadgetzan (2/2/2).

  • Or, in short, 410 dust and 19 packs (1,953 dust). That 2,363 dust turns into 2,299 gold. Plus Rank 5 rewards of 5,894 gold per year. So in 2016 we received rewards worth 8,359 gold.

So what does this all mean for grinding?

  • In 2016 you made +6,103 gold per year assuming you cashed in all the rewards, re-rolled your quests, and played 30 wins per day. Insane, but theoretically possible.

  • In 2017 you have a shortfall of -21,027 gold per year assuming you have the same rewards as 2016. Basically, you would need to get an additional 210 additional packs of rewards somewhere just to break even with 2016. Or about 268 packs worth of content total.

  • Some people may think you should pay or don't need all the cards. The takeaway for them is that no matter how much you spent in 2015/2016 you need to spend a lot more for equal card access in 2017. (Assuming rewards don't drastically increase.)

Assumptions Based off my spreadsheet of pack openings. (Starts at B175)

* I have a spreadsheet where I factored 33,315 pack openings with a minimum of 40 packs per session and found the average dust per pack is 102.8151.
* From there you can work the dust to gold ratio 0.9726197966 and the gold to dust 1.028150983

* For simplicity, Tavern Brawls and Free Pack quests are assumed to be worth 100g.

TLDR; F2P is potentially dead now. You made +6,103 gold in 2016 if you maxed everything and continually hit Rank 5. (Even more in 2015 as there were 2 Adventures). In 2017, with similar rewards, you would short -21,027 gold, or -210 packs.

  1. Edit 1: Forgot to calculate End of Season Rewards. Now reflected in post. If you are grinding I am assuming you hit Rank 5 every month for 505 dust per month.

  2. Edit 2: A lot of people seem to think the F2P example is too extreme but it is the only objective thing to base a model. Everything else is subjective:

    • What is a competitive card...ladder or tournament?
    • What decks count a competitive card over 2 years (that is the lifespan of a set). How many Tier 1, 2, or 3 decks do you need to qualify as competitive? What duration does it need to stay on ladder? Does a Rank 1 Legend deck like Fibonacci's old Control Warrior warrant including Tournament Medic?
    • How many packs do you need to open?
    • Do you need to wait a month or two before crafting anything as a general rule?
    • If you need a "customized example", regardless of how much you spent/crafted last year, imagine you could decide between all of League of Explorers (Karazhan was a flop) or a single specific legendary from Mean Streets of Gadgetzan to last you 3 months. You pick your Patches for 3 months. Everyone else is playing with Reno/Brann/Tunnel Trogg/Rafaam/Elise/Sir Finley/Raven Idol/Desert Camel/etc. And you can pay for access to these cards but the point is you wouldn't have had to in 2016. And you probably will need to in 2017.
