I love being a noob.

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 07:32 AM PST

I'm pretty new to Guild Wars, I came from WoW hoping for a similar open world experience and leveled a Thief to 13, then made a Human Warrior yesterday to see what it was like (I might as well use up my other character slot). I was doing some beginner quests, adventuring around and finally came upon a hill where I just sat for a moment to rest, when another adventurer comes up to me. "Hablas Español?" No, I don't. I failed almost every Spanish class I took, but why not humor the guy? "Si, in poco." Somehow, some way we both get the point across that we're noobs, with not much of an idea of what we're doing. We try to help each other out, him using some very broken English and me with my very awful Spanish. He says he was looking for someone to talk to, because he couldn't find anyone that spoke Spanish. I teach him a few things that we're similar to WoW, like emotes, partying, and attempted to trade him a weapon before realizing that doesn't work. Then we went around finding quests and events together, and played for hours, both of us clueless and barely able to communicate. And I loved it. Got to around level 10! So I'm looking forward to playing this game, thanks whoever that was. :)

TL;DR: I'm a noob, don't speak Spanish, made friends with a guy from Mexico who doesn't speak English, we quested together and had an awesome time. Can't wait to play more!

[ Suggestion / Mini Rant ]Make astral force reset to 100% on raid wipe

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 02:33 PM PST

People already abuse the fact that reviving someone who /gg before the fight gives astral force, and so does taking an adrenal mushroom. Literally every raid wipe results in an extra 15 seconds wait because the druid needs his CA filled. Even if the group wipes within 2 seconds of the fight because someone forgot something or was afk, that 2 second wipe is now a 17 second wipe because the druid needs his freaking CA again. It makes sense for them to start with CA fully filled anyway,

  1. The rotation with full CA makes more sense

  2. It takes 20 years to fill CA in combat as no one takes damage in the beginning of the fight

  3. Everyone already does it anyway especially in organized/record attempts, sometimes you spend more time filling CA than fighting the actual boss

Please make Astral Force full to 100% on raid wipe specifically, it makes sense to keep it empty in other game modes. This will save a lot of guilds a huge headache, especially me since my guild druid is dumb enough to be the reason we wipe 50% of the time. (It's ok he wont be mad because I said this)

[LN] 5-Man Sabetha - 18s left on timer

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 08:30 AM PST

Hey Guys!

After many tries, a ton of theorycrafting and testing and hours of practice we are finally proud to present you with our 5-Man Sabetha kill, beating the last boss of w1 with 18 seconds left on the timer!

Condi Druid (TaDe): https://youtu.be/O_7Gc0RWDL4

Condi Warrior (Fail): https://youtu.be/xb122LsaMZw

Condi Ranger (Nightmare): https://youtu.be/39b6agu2lhw

Condi Ranger (Roca): https://youtu.be/Vb1ukr7qmPM

Chronomancer (Wanda): Unavailable/RIP File

So here a bit of info about our tactics (and there is a lot we did differently here):

The first thing you will notice is our group composition. While most people use Elementalists on Sabetha, we found that core condi Ranger is actually the strongest for the encounter. Not only that (many of you might've already known), but condi Ranger can also do Cannons extremely fast and efficiently, apllying a lot of condis in a short time and then going back to Sabetha as the cannons ticks down. This didn't work quite as well when we did south, as it prevented the ranger from getting into a decent rotation for the rest of the fight, which is basically the reason we decided to skip south and leave it up throughout the whole fight. Ultimately, this left our rangers with much higher dps than ele (even without take root this was slightly better). Which brings me to the next topic: Take Root. Wow that skill is broken. We were hesitant to use this skill at first as we weren't sure whether race-skills are allowed for records, but the general consent seemed to be of the opinion that racial skills should be treated like any other skill during a record. Also there have been other records already that made use of racial skills. So, first we used this on our condi rangers (obviously). Later and after a bunch more tests we also used it on our druid and ultimately just said "Fuck it, let's everyone use it" - except Mesmer ofc. Even for our Condi Warrior this resulted in a dps-increase. As most of our runs only used Take Root on our two condi rangers I think I can say with some confidence that the kill would have been possible even without Take Root on Druid and Warrior, but since it increased our time by a few very valuable seconds we decided to roll with it.

Our Druid was also playing a vital role in our tactic. To provide the Rangers with the highest possible boon uptime, he had to be very careful about his positioning. Standing on the opposite side of Sabetha led to Sabetha turning around between each of her skills led to her attacks being delayed and less pressure for the dps classes. Also he took the first time bomb after every flamewall and integrated doing this in his kiting and his rotation. He was also the one looking out for heavy bombs alongside the Mesmer. He took storm spirit to bring the necessary vulnerability to the fight and used the shatter to make up for CC on Knuckles that our warrior would've otherwise provided with headbutt. He brought Wyvern and Glyph of Equality to suppress Adds as they would've otherwise knocked us around a lot more. He was basically in charge of looking out for almost everything and the hidden carry of this run.

Our Mesmer was obviously in charge of boon uptimes (quickness, alacrity, etc.). His special job was to pull adds to the middle so that our Rangers and Druid could suppress them with their pets, preventing knock-backs. This was a lot more important than one would think. He also helped out with heavy bombs and provided invulnerability in dire situations (this actually saved the run during Karde). He played with Illusions instead of Domination to increase Alacrity uptime (important for condi rangers).

Our warrior was in charge of killing Karde's flame turrets asap. With enough dps we managed to kill Karde spawning only 2 Flame turrets, which he could kill off quite well without wasting any dps on the boss. The warrior took Take Root instead of headbutt, which changed his rotation a bit at the beginning of the fight and delayed our might-uptime during the first phase, but ultimately increased our dps.

Our Rangers were in charge of the Cannons as previously mentioned. One of the rangers was assigned 2/4 while the other one had to take care of only one cannon and could focus a lot more on dps. Each of our Rangers also brought a dps-spirit (frost/sun), so our druid could bring storm spirit for vulnerability and CC. We made sure to not waste our Take Root on Kernen and Knuckles but instead kept them for dps-phases on Sabetha and Karde. The Ranger that had only one cannon also used his Wyvern CCs to suppress the adds whenever they were pulled by the Mesmer.

Ultimately, we want to thank our fellow guildmate Farbstoff for his help in the theorycrafting-process. We were originally going to do a 6-Man kill, but wanted to go for the 5-Man rather soon as we saw how well our tactics worked, so he took one for the team and left the spaces to our rangers.

Sorry for the wall of text guys, I hope you will enjoy our kill 

ps.: No skill-clicking on this one!

About Alexander's Achievement...

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 01:06 PM PST

I don't see that we found anything new about this hidden achievement, which still no player has. Here's a quick summary what we know:

I don't know if it already spread, but there was a rumor which said that we might have to destroy a ley line anomaly in gendarran, iron marches or timberland falls before it can absorb "ANY MAGIC AT ALL" - which means, we have to to every coalescence event and after breaking the break bar it spawns these coalescences as well, which are not allowed to reach him, either.

Instead of thinking what we might have to do, I think it would be best to review everything we know about the current events. Here's what I know:

  • Every current event played in maps which were there before and came with Heart of Thorns, so it didn't take place at bloodstone fen, ember bay or the bitterfrost frontier
  • We have three kinds of current events regarding magic: Ley line anomalies, bloodstone magic and energy signatures from when Primordous moved frome Frostgorge to Ember Bay.
  • We have current events regarding activities of the white mantle: Posters, encoded orders and death marks.

What else do we know?

BLC RNG

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 09:22 AM PST

For years I've been collecting minis but now I've finally been set free. The joy of collecting anything for me, comes with having a complete set. I've always managed to keep up with every single mini they've released. I've bought every mini in the gem store, even the ones I didn't like, just to satisfy my goal of having a complete set. But I refuse to gamble an indefinite amount of money every time ANET decides to release an exclusive, limited-time item in the black lion chest.

I'm glad that I'll be able to save lots of money not having to buy every single mini that will be released in the gem store, but it's also sad that I no longer have a goal in GW2. Without the possibility of completing the perfect collection of minis, or weapon skins (candelabra staff), or anything that BLC RNG touches, I feel that I've lost a large part of what made GW2 fun for me.

I'm not saying that, as a collector, I have every skin or dye or mini (anymore), but it was the possibility of someday completing the whole set that created goals to progress towards and made GW2 fun and exciting to play. And it was fun and excitement, along with appreciation for the game and the developers, that made it so that I didn't mind spending money on gem store minis in order to keep that possibility of a complete set open. I am saddened by the company's decision to place limited-time RNG items in the cash shop. Because I refuse to condone or indulge in gambling money, the only other option I have is to close off the possibility of collecting things and lose a large part of what drove me to play and support GW2.

[App] Who's Talking 2.0 released! Never lose track of your friends on TeamSpeak ever again!

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 11:36 AM PST

Hi guys!

I'm aRestless and I'm the lead developer on Who's Talking for Guild Wars 2. Who's Talking (or WT) is a free app for Overwolf and TeamSpeak that allows you and your friends to see each other's position projected into the game, marked with a customizable icon. This makes it very easy to keep track of one another, even in crowded situations, and you'll always know where to go when asked for help. Here's a quick GIF how that looks. If you're more into videos than walls of text, there's a quick guide to the app available on YouTube here.

Very similar to the popular GW2TacO, WT utilizes the official MumbleLink API to extract position information from the game. While TacO aims to be a helpful universal tool with integrated guides and utilities, our projects are all about sharing information and even content between players, to enrich everyone's gameplay experience. Who's Talking is one way of doing that.

Who's Talking is as "officially allowed" as it gets, since its first version won two awards in the Overwolf App Challenge in 2015, where the winners were determined purely by ArenaNet employees. So we can confidently say that you won't get into trouble for using WT, and, if there's any problem with it, that ArenaNet will definitely approach us first before taking actions against individual players.

Getting Who's Talking

If you're impatient and just want to know where to get it, here's a direct download link. This installer will either add Who's Talking to an existing Overwolf installation, or provide you with a version of Overwolf that has WT (and only WT) preinstalled. If you don't trust directly linked .exe files, just get it from Overwolf's built-in app store.

2.0

The actual reason for this post is the newly released 2.0 version, which has been in on/off development since that contest in 2015. We weren't happy with performance and especially usability, so we pretty much overhauled the whole thing. Here are some highlights:

  • Nondisturbing by default. With the default settings, your gameplay won't be interrupted and you'll only notice WT when it actually benefits you (i.e. there's another WT user in your TeamSpeak channel).
  • It truly works right out of the box. Install it via Overwolf and it just works, no need to set up anything, everything happens automatically.
  • We don't utilize the TeamSpeak chat anymore. That was annoying as heck.
  • Customizable icons (not just colors), including the ability to upload your own images. Kappa
  • Support for different modes that decide when your own icon is shown to others (see below)

What is it useful for?

While using WT ourselves we encountered three different scenarios where WT is useful for different reasons, and we recommend a different operation mode for each of them:

  • Open world with one or two friends. Even while exploring, people tend to get sidetracked and are quickly out of sight, or you stumble into a big event and the screen is cluttered with other players. We wouldn't have thought so beforehand, but for us WT really shines in these situations. For this use-case, we recommend to set WT to always send your position, regardless if you're talking or not.
  • 5 man instances. Hearing "stack on me" or "I need healing" on TS becomes way more useful when you directly see which character that voice belongs to. For groups like this, we recommend to set WT to send your position while talking, so that the screen isn't cluttered with icons while you don't need them.
  • For big groups like WvW zergs, we recommend to never send your position automatically for the average player. You can then use a hotkey to ping your current position to others. Important members of the group may use other settings, just as you'd mark certain players with squad symbols.

By default, WT is configured to only send your position while talking.

Upcoming Features

  • Discord support. Nothing more to say.
  • Support for multiple TeamSpeak tabs / server connections. Currently WT doesn't like multiple TS tabs, but we'll change that.
  • More performance improvements. We made big leaps from where we were before, but there's still stuff to be improved upon.

Remarks

  • Without WT, try to stay below ~90% CPU usage to get a smooth experience. Maybe consider limiting FPS in GW2's setting so that GW2 doesn't take all resources it can get.
  • There are two rendering methods to choose from in WT's settings in the "Performance" menu. The default is "Injected", which should work in all scenarios. The alternative, "Overlayed", yields better performance, but doesn't work in full screen and has some other small disadvantages which are explained within the app. I personally prefer the overlayed version because it's a bit smoother, but decide for yourself.

Special Thanks

Our thanks go out to /u/WoodenPotatoes, who covered the beta of the 2.0 version on a stream quite early (in a very wonky state), as well as to all players who participated in our beta tests. I'm sure there are still a few bugs hiding in our code, but without you it would be a whole lot more. As the beta phase is now officially over, we will contact all of our beta testers because of some little prizes we promised a while ago.

And of course, big thanks to you, who read this wall of text and considers trying out our app. Have fun with it and let us know what you think!

Shouldn't there be a way to extract extra bag slots from a character i just want to delete?

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 11:46 AM PST

Is there any real reason why we can't take our bag slots back if we delete a char?

Find it kinda stupid that gemstore item can just disappear by deletion since unlike hair style / makeover this is supposed to be an "account upgrade" and is in another category than them on gem store.

You can pay 1000 gems for identity change instead i suppose but that is 1000 gems too much in my opinion and doesn't help if you want a different race/class, considering i am ok losing all progress on said char.

Or am i just being too entitled? :P

We need to reward the heros of WvW who make sustainable fights possible with a portion of the bags and wvw exp their assisted allies get. currently they actually get less because they arent spending as much time tagging as many enemies as possible or focusing single enemies down

Tyrian Cannonball Run (fluff type stuff)

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 03:28 PM PST

For historical reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_Baker_Sea-To-Shining-Sea_Memorial_Trophy_Dash

Lion's Arch chat is interesting on occasion. Thursday night, the question was posed: "How long would it take to run from Forlorn Gate Waypoint in Fields of Ruin, to Dragon's Domain Central Waypoint in Dragon's Stand?

This piqued my interest, and looking at the map, I estimated between 2 and 3 hours at un-buffed running speed. From there, I got very curious as to a much more accurate number, and we started discussing the rules that would need to be followed, because clearly the fastest way would be to just waypoint.

After discussion about meta events (the final waypoint is locked if meta has not been completed up to the blighting towers, etc), the starting waypoint and end waypoint were adjusted, as well as some rules added. The challenge was set with the following:
* Start: Fallen Angels Garrison Waypoint in Fields of Ruin
* End: Central Advance Camp Waypoint in Dragon's Stand
* Rule 1: No waypointing (exception: if dead, waypoint must be one that you have already passed)
* Rule 2: No portal scrolls
* Rule 3: No Asura gates
* Rule 4: No use of Guild Halls
* Rule 5: No Nuhoc Wallow use
* Rule 6: No Exalted Markings use
* Rule 7: No mesmer portal, or similar portal, use.

Basically the idea for the rules was to limit things to running/gliding. I'm sure there may be other methods that i've missed, but the spirit of the rules is to just run as fast as you can while allowing for things such as traits, speed boost mushrooms, boons, etc.
Loading screen time was included, so I'm sure that people with SSD's could probably do this faster. In fact, I'm sure there is plenty of time to shave off, as I was just doing this to have fun.

End result was 51minutes 21.92 seconds.

Class used: Daredevil with Signet of Shadows (25% movement speed increase), and Unhindered Combatant for Dash, which came in very useful for dodging out of cripple, etc. I also made use of Harpy Feathers for quick bits of stealth in some situations.

The point of it all? There was none. I was just curious as to how fast it could be done.

*edit: fixed formatting

Sometimes I feel we forget about the official forums!

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 10:18 PM PST

I'm sure a lot of you actually use the forums but so often I will see a great post on Reddit about an idea someone would like to see in game. Though sometime we might get a Dev response here, the forums is going to be much more likely for them to see and implement the idea. Just the other day I saw a post about miniatures and a Dev loved it and was asking for them to repost it in the forums. So I would just like to see us try to get the forum conversation sparking. Cheer and good gaming!

What I love the most about GW1 and GW2

Posted: 27 Jan 2017 11:25 PM PST

I realized the other day that GW2 is the only game that has remained installed on my system unanimously since it came out over 4 years ago. I've always been able to have fun in GW2, see the content and then check out other games. It's one of the few games I've played where I don't feel anxiety or stress about having to play, play, play constantly to get the most of it. GW2 is always there and I can work towards my own goals in the game by doing many types of content. I just had a kick of really getting into HoT again, and it's great that I can make progress towards the skins I want by playing that content, or WvW or levelling my alt, or crafting, or buying with the gold I am also earning. Or story, or EOTM/WvW, or metas.

GW2 is just such a good game to have. I love all my characters and I don't feel they are irrelevant like in other games. I like that the mastery system can unlock new things for all of them! I love gliding! It's one of the few flight-additions in MMOs that doesn't ruin the ground-game!

And thank you to the community! People are so goddamn cool in this game. Except in sPvP;D

The Cleansing of Orr still gives me shivers. Even the twelfth time I do it. [Spoilers for everyone who still doesn't know that Uncle Ben dies.]

It's magical. All those names, the memories, the fallen. The circle of survivors bonded together by war and mutual loss. The sudden silence, accentuated with very few spoken words.

I don't no who crafted that episode, but I hope he got a raise for it.

(Now all we need is [Champion of Orr] as a damn title. Come on, Anet!)

QoL suggestion: Add a few inventory item links to the right of the '0' skill

Posted: 28 Jan 2017 12:48 PM PST

There are things we carry in inventory that would be handy to able click on without pressing 'i' first. Activators for quests, food items, utility items, buff generators (like gobbler). I've put many of these into shared slots, but it'd be nice to drag it to a square on the UI, for both convenience and a reminder. This would be a linkage, the actual item would still have to be in inventory.
