7.01 sniper is very strong. Build guide and meta/map analysis inside.

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 04:34 PM PST

Hi, I am a long time mid player, currently hovering around 5.1k mmr and im going to give my thoughts on sniper this patch.

Map changes:

Highground: All the new highground is incredibly beneficial for sniper because of his immense range, abuse it as much as you can. Additonally, alot of the neutral camps are lowground. Sniper, like other range heroes can farm these with relative safety from the highground

Shrines: as a non-bottle mid, sniper previously had some sustain problems. With shrines being so close to mid this is largley taken care of. Shrines in base also help with high ground defense, something sniper has traditionally excelled at.

Ancients: There is a new camp right next to the mid lane (especially close on dire) sniper with phase aquila and mom( more on this item later) can farm these anciants very fast. Combined with farming mid makes for a very fat snipe.

Items: The build i opt for most games is phase aquila. And a situational wand into MOM with a raindrop as needed. After I build Dragon lance into pike if needed. After that its situational grabbing maelstrom and a bkb and whatever items as needed.

Why mom? Farm speed and early game power. This item now gives +dmg all the time, 100as when activated and a burst to ms. The drawbacks are -4 armor and being silenced for 8 seconds. The -4 armor is negligible because of how you abuse range. The silence you play around by casting shrap first and blowing up whoever stands in it. I cant overstate how fast this item lets you farm. You zoom around the jungle killing ancients very fast and hitting like a freaking truck with just mom lance phase. I typically finish mom between mins 10-12 and quickly pick up a lance at around 14mins. These two items turn you into a tower seiging machine on top of their other benefits. You come on line VERY early with these items and can go around taking towers with the team. I iqnore aghs, i believe this item is the cause for snipers lack of signifigant increase in winrate.

Meta: its a fighting meta, something sniper excels at. On top of that he is strong in lane and very very easy to gank for. Yes he gets ganked easily but you will often get turn around kills by spamming out a couple shraps b4 you die. In general you come online so fast with mom you can outpace carries like like Luna. Finally against some mids you can get relativley ez solo kills once you hit 6- something alot of mids lack currently.

Skill buils: I often max sharp first with 1 point in headshot at lvl 5. Despite grabbing mom shrap is too good to ignore and is your main defense against ganks and your main ganking tool in the early game. I max take aim in specific matchups like vs OD to avoid astral.

Talents: I opt for mana regen because i already have good atk speed from mom+lance and having it lets you use shrap on anciant prowlers and stacked camps more frequently. After that its situational.

Conclusions: sniper owns with new map changes and meta changes. Dont build aghs get mom. Apologies for poor formatting/grammer/spelling, I wrote this on mobile. Next guide will be a look at SF, my other spam hero this patch.

Ember Spirit Build

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 09:43 PM PST

So I am seeing more variety in Ember builds now, which is great because pre-7.00 the hero had the most static build in the game.

Is it possible to hybridize the magic damage and right click builds?

The idea is to go Veil after Bottle, and then go BoTs, Battlefury, Daedalus, Octarine. By lowering cooldowns, of all Ember's abilities, his DPS output of both physical and magic damage become insane.

I know after going Veil a lot of people go a pseudo-Naga build, but Radiance doesn't seem to have the potential impact that a Battlefury will have, even with damage amp. Manta and Octarine still seem very good though.

Any thoughts on what the Ember build is going to be? Probably won't find out the real optimal build until he becomes a meta hero again.

This is my second time posting here and I just lost a game for the exact same reason as the last time. Here is the link to the game. I don't really need to write anything here, as I already wrote it here. . This is literally the exact same deal as before, everything in that post completely stands.

Templar Assassin as a counter to Monkey King? And could SnY make a comeback?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 11:21 PM PST

So, I've been playing a lot of Dota lately trying to get out of shit tier 1k (also disclaimer: all of this is from a 1k shitter so feel free to disregard it or criticize the shit out of it), and after a bit of a rough start I think I'm starting to find my groove in 7.01. So, for the benefit of others and for the sake of starting a discussion, here are some thoughts on the game right now.

1) Templar Assassin is really strong against Monkey King: I don't think I've seen this brought up in the discussions about Monkey King that I've read, so forgive me if this isn't anything ground breaking. But I think that TA is in a really good place this patch overall, and is actually one of the more solid heroes that can lane against MK in the mid. Her range with psi-blades is such that you can effectively get in and harass Monkey King aggressively, instead of playing more passively like other ranged heroes. Refraction, when timed right, also negates the activation of Jingu Mastery, meaning that if he tries to man fight you, not only does TA have invulnerability, but he isn't life-stealing. Monkey King is also pretty squishy, so once you've got your deso you can blow him up. You don't have to worry about his ult, either, since you can jump in with refraction up and meld strike him before he can react.

Maybe I'm just playing against bad Monkey Kings, and maybe I'm full of shit. But it seems like TA just kinda beats up on him throughout all stages of the game, aside from the very early laning stage when you don't have levels in refraction or psi-blades.

2) Sange and Yasha might be good again: I play a lot of Juggernaut, and I think the hero got hit pretty hard by the level system changes. I've seen other people posting wondering about builds. Initially, I thought that battlefury was the way to go. It gives you some regen to solve your mana problems, and it enables you to really speed up your farm. I found though that battlefury is kind of a waste of time. It takes even longer to farm now, since there is both less farm on the map and the patch in general makes people want to be aggressive. I just don't think its really viable, at least in pubs, to try and go for a really farm heavy build on any hero.

I also wasn't really satisfied with the old Manta-Diffusal build. Manta just didn't seem to be doing enough. I knew I wanted Yasha though, but you obviously need to build it into something. I also felt like, since Jugg's talents do give him a fair bit more damage, SnY might actually be good. It beefs him up and the Maim is a decent way to keep people near you. With all the fighting in this patch, I think that's exactly what you want. I've typically been following it up with a diffusal and then ideally into Skadi in order to become really beefy and also solve your stats problems.

So, this is all my 1k wood tier brain has to offer on this patch right now, and I'm sure you guys are gonna rip it to pieces. But thanks for the read anyway.

Questions about matchmaking and forced 50%

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 03:17 PM PST

It seems recently that many of my matches have been extremely one-sided. From what I've noticed, I either get great teammates who communicate well and are generally higher skilled, or teammates that refuse to communicate and make overall bad decisions. I'm not trying to complain about shitty teammates because I know I'm one of them sometimes. It seems to me that I either do the best on my team and lose, or do the worst on my team and win. This makes games much less fun to me when it feels like the outcome of the game is out of my control.

So is this a result of the forced 50% matchmaking, the meta, or my own bias? If what I'm experiencing is an actual thing, why doesn't matchmaking split the skill among teams better?

I want to continue to improve at this game both in MMR and actual skill, but it's hardly satisfying to be tested for skill in such a way. While the status quo may be the best way to balance matchmaking, it is definitely not the most fun.

Ladder anxiety

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 06:10 PM PST

I feel i'm in a weird position right now I am winning a lot. I feel like something has changed and things are starting to click for me, and my win rate has jumped up as a result. However the thing holding me back is getting nervous before i play a ranked game i'll sit there and try and decide whether I can do this. Here is my dotabuff https://www.dotabuff.com/players/264526812/matches?date=month&lobby_type=ranked_matchmaking as you can see my win rate at the moment is stupid and i just dont understand why its so hard for me to click that find match button. Basically, I need some tips for overcoming my ladder anxiety, I have tried just not caring and clicking search every time and I lost 300mmr in about 2 weeks. I don't know if this anxiety is me subconsiously analysing my fitness to play or if its something thats holding me back from climbing faster.

How can I play BH effectively in high 2k?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 05:53 PM PST

Hi guys, so before the patch I was always a mid/carry player from 1.5k to 2.9k but now I'm really enjoying support, rotating in the first 10 minutes and winning all 3 lanes then teamfighting to victory. The only hero I've never ever played is bounty hunter, I never really understood him as a core and I don't really understand him as a roamer. Can someone explain to me what you do with him? I understand his invis can make it easy to gank other lanes but he only has a nuke+slow, do you just rotate and wait until an enemy overextends and throw jinada? The one thing that really helps me with most supports that I play atm is all I really have to do is get into the shadows and then wait and stun and its a guaranteed kill 90% of the time, but BH has no stun so if the enemy is playing safe and not leaving tower range/has good creep skills how are you supposed to do anything useful?

What could I have done better as Warlock this game?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:36 PM PST

My laning stage was good, we actually managed to get a decent advantage on them, Meepo also died a few times. It was originally going good, but I couldn't convince my team to Smoke gank and push objectives. Furthermore our BB just afked. What could I have done better to potentially win the game?

Should I buy a linkens vs heroes like bane and viper on unconventional heroes like lifestealer or sven?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:16 PM PST

For massive bkb piercing disables, should I buy a linkens against them? Things like viper make my life as a carry hell because bkb does literally nothing against them. Thanks in advance.

Who had a better draft this game?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 07:51 AM PST

There was some discussion about which team had the better draft. I want an unbiased opinion: what do you think?

Radiant -- PA, Clinkz, Sniper, Bristle, Zeus

Dire -- Venge, Weaver, Tide, Magnus, OD

Who has the advantage?

How to stop the Snowballing BS and Slark

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 07:44 AM PST

I've been going up the MMR when I come across Slark, and BS combo that absolutely wreck me. From minute 8ish the snowball starts to form than by minute 16-18 the snowball is a dam snowboulder.. I can usually hold my lane well until I get lvl 6 or my core items to start ganking, but my teammates will just bail on their lane and hop in jungle if lane is contested. Then the everything falls apart.. I try to help the hurting Lane, and by then it's too late cause seekers got Rupture. How do you stop the Slark and Bloodseeker stop snowballing?

Having trouble deciding which heroes I should pick for all-pick.

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 10:50 AM PST

So I'm not really trying to tryhard counterpick, but I enjoy playing a handful of heroes in all-pick. Could anyone help me by telling me which heroes excel at what? More or a less a "if your team lacks _____, <this hero> probably offers more than <this hero>" type of advice.

Heroes I like to play: Tiny, Clinkz, Nightstalker, Bloodseeker, Shadow Shaman, Undying, Bristleback.

Shadow shaman and undying I generally play in support roles, so if my team needs supports I'll use them. But as for the others, I am in the habit of just grabbing whoever. Do they have synergy with any team compositions? For example if I am in the mood to play a melee hero and hit stuff all game, when would I pick blood seeker over night stalker or vice versa? For the record I am in trench tier and I am aware other basic things (being able to last hit, knowing where to find farm, positioning in team fights) make way more of a difference than hero picks but any advice would help give me more directions for my picks.

Thanks!

Best carry heroes for a new player

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:26 AM PST

Luna is the main hero I play, I chose her because she was a carry who seemed quite simple with a powerful looking kit to me. I also play a little Troll Warlord because he seems similarly pretty simple. Am I mistaken in thinking these heroes are simple or good for beginners? In your opinions what are the simplest carry heroes, or for a slightly different question, what are the best carry heroes for new players to play?

How do I play Abaddon as a support?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:20 AM PST

I can't find any specific guides for this, at least not recently updated. I'm going to assume you save maxing Curse of Avernus until last, but which one do you max first? and what items do you build?

I'm on a huge losing streak - help

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 11:13 AM PST

Hello guys, I've been having a hard time this week -- I have been losing a lot. The enemy team seems to win whatever I pick - I tried mid, support, jungle, but hardly anything works.

This is my dotabuff, I'd really appreciate any tips. I try my best to ward and keep others from dying, but sometimes this isn't possible in the range I'm playing at (pretty sure I'll be super low MMR after calibration).

Thanks & Merry Christmas! :)

Anyone else have focusing problems? Especially when playing as a support?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 09:05 AM PST

Sometimes as a support, I end up being pretty damn useless in the later game. Like a crystal maiden against bkbs can't do anything but die in a fight. I get so demoralized and can't even focus on the game. My mind just starts thinking about other stuff and as a result I just play so much worse. Anybody have any thoughts or solutions to this problem?

What could I have done better this game?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 02:13 AM PST

Here is the game in question. If somebody could skim through the replay it would be much appreciated. I had a very rough early game because my sand king was pushing the lane and taking last hits with his caustic finale, and the phantom lancer and weaver were being extremely aggressive whenever I went into lane, so I went jungling instead.

However, the late game is the most important for me. Specifically itemization. I had a very rough early and mid game, but, typical of 2k mmr, the other team didn't to farm instead of push, so I got to farm my core items. I decided to get a mjollnir for phantom lancer, and that worked incredibly well, but then comes the end of the game. He has gotten so tanky my mjollnir was useless against him, so he was destroying me in every fight. I think maybe it would have been better to build a battlefury, but the hp regen from it is useless on naix, and I would have extremely little attack speed. Would it have been better to build battlefury into mjollnir? Thanks in advance.
