Looking forward

Every contest we hold, I'm continually impressed by the talent in our community, whether in terms of the actual game, or creative outputs like cardback design or writing. Also, I'd like to thank /u/Jarmanien for all his help in running the Gang War, and /u/deviouskat89 for her sponsorship of the Cardback Contest prize!

The response to these tournaments has been overwhelmingly positive, with so many entrants and more and more people placing their votes. As always, if you have an idea or would like to sponsor a prize for an upcoming tournament, please message the mods!

I would also like to announce that /r/Hearthstone WILL be participating in the redditwide Best of 2016 contest! The nomination thread will go live on Monday, where you can submit your nominations for /r/Hearthstone's best content of the year.

Categories will include:

  • Best Post
  • Best Comment
  • Most Valuable Redditor
  • ... and more to be announced on Monday!

Enjoy your holidays, folks! See you very soon.

Streamer Sundays Weekly Discussion

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 04:07 PM PST

Do you enjoy watching streamers? Do you wish there was an easier way to find new up-and-coming streamers beyond the well-known, established Twitch goliaths?

Do you have a stream yourself? Are you looking to get exposure but not sure how given how Twitch displays streams and how one-shot stream promotion posts on Reddit tend to get ignored? Is anyone still reading these questions?

This thread is for you!

If you are a streamer or know of a cool, lesser-known (read: doesn't regularly pull in 1K+ viewers) streamer feel free to post the URL and a short, informative pitch about why you feel others would be interested to watch it. Why should someone watch your suggested stream rather than one of the hundreds of other streams out there?

The next great streamer might be just one comment away.

Enjoy!

Note: I am a bot. Questions or feedback regarding this thread? Message the moderators.

Any thoughts?

HAPPY FESTIVUS r/hearthstone ! I figured I'd make this thread so everyone can have a safe space to complain about the little and big things that bug them about this game.

I'll start off:

Dear Hearthstone, You've got the worst reconnect feature in all of online gaming. You've robbed me of lethal hundreds of times and ruined promising arena runs.

My list of most impressive arena feats I've seen in my 2.5 years here

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 05:22 AM PST

Hey guys. I've been lurking on several HS and arena related sub-reddits and forums for a few years now. Here's my knowledge of most insane feats and accomplishments I've seen shared over time in different places. Feel free to add or correct me on any of these and I will try to edit and update this post. In regards to arena we don't see too much official information shared often, so here's my attempt to give some Christmas props to folks.

Most consecutive 12 win arena runs I've heard off: u/RetroGold with 5 runs about 14 months ago, repeated by u/Kripparrian about half a year ago during his unbelievable hot streak.

Other notable series of 12 win arena runs I recall that got good publicity include both u/ratsmah (on stream) and u/ADWCTA doing 12+12+12+11 about 1.5 years ago. Although since then I've seen several non-public players claim 4 at times, and it seems like not too un-common personal best for the ultra hardcore arena players.

Ratsmah doing 6 consecutive rogue runs to 12 wins(counting a coaching run).

Most impressive series of 12 win runs I've heard has to be the one Kripp pulled off following his series of 5 in a row. His entire series was 12+12+12+12+12+5+12+12+12+5+12+7+12+12+12, totaling 12 12-win runs in 15 arena runs and 161 wins in 15 runs, I'd be surprised if this wasn't best total of 15 runs anyone has had.

100 in 10 arena challenge first to complete was TwoBiers. Thread

100 in 10 2nd to complete was Mef u/Mef_tv who also managed to get all 9 classes represented in his series. Also back when the controversial arena streamer leader-board was still active, through-out it's lifespan this less-known Ukrainian streamer Mef was the player who usually dominated it with his 7.8'ish longer term averages.

100 in 10 3rd I heard completing it was u/A_Isherwood . He managed to get it done notably not picking Rogue that was the best class back then.

Crazy hot streaks that did not follow the 100 in 10 type of rules(class bans etc) include Kripp winning 101 games in 9 runs during his insane hot streak and u/Woett winning 200 arena games in 20 arena runs, one of the rare feats that devs actually confirmed on this subreddit. Coincidentally in the [recently revealed arena statistics](us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/blog/20324474/inside-the-arena-10-18-2016) , among the players who had played 100+ arena runs in first 9 months of 2016, Kripp boasted the 3rd highest avg win rate in NA and Woett the 3rd average win rate in EU. Btw out of known streamers, the other one that made it to top 3s was one of u/itshafu 100 in 10 anti-snipe accounts ending #2 on NA.

Most consecutive 12-0 arena runs in a row is what motivated me making this topic in first place, as u/bidji29 posted his series of 3 in a row here yesterday, for rather mediocre attention considering the magnitude and insanity of the feat.

Bidji29 also ties the highest number of consecutive games won in arena that I've heard off with 36(he lost the 0-0 game in his 4th run) with u/thebeefmachine series he posted 9 months ago.

Other notable public win streaks include GuardsmanBob winning 29 games in a row about 2 years ago(over different servers) on stream, and Kripp winning 31 games in row on stream couple of weeks ago.

Arena player with most in-game gold I've ever seen claimed and believe is a prominent public forums arena poster Madkatt. I will see if I can get an updated screenshot from him. But about a year ago in a thread where he celebrated his 200th 12-win arena run(if I recall correctly), I remember him having near 50k gold. His is also the owner of this hilarious screenshot, only one I actually had bookmarked and was able to find atm. Two months ago he mentioned in one of his posts that his gold count is 70k on his main account and around 30k on his two 2ndary accounts. Unless he has since then quit, I have no reason to doubt that his gold count is in ~80k range by now.

In Chinese server there was a monthly competition for most 12 win runs per month. For example in June 2016, the winning account accomplished 38 12-win runs in that month, 2nd place was 33. Couple of months later they changed their rules to monthly win rate percentage based(300 games min), for September it looked like this.

Most impressive avg in the Blizzard released 2016 statistics has to go u/PollitosEU ending with 7.99 as 2nd on EU and overall with very narrow margin behind the Ceasar. But having about 2x the sample size of him and evidenced by him also being the best hunter player over people having done 10+ runs with it, not being one to always ignore all the bottom classes.

In regards to more fun trivia: I've been collecting screenshots of craziest arena decks I've seen shared in places. Here's an album including some of the craziest ones I've seen: http://imgur.com/a/2YzHj

My tribute to Kripps series of "craziest arena decks I've ever played against" is this funny screenshot shared to me by u/lu_gge . I've stared it for dozens of minutes wondering how he actually managed to win this game considering it went so deep he actually saw all these cards played against him.

Personally I'm nowhere close to any names mentioned here in neither achievements or quality, but my random more trivial claims to fame would be 3 consecutive warriors 12s in late GvG, a 9.0 11 runs priest avg during BRM, playing a warrior vs warrior final boss game during TGT, and once finding a screenshot of a weirdest ever priest 12 win deck on my desktop that dated back to a night where I was blacked out drunk.

Anyways I'm just one guy, so any cool stuff I've missed you can post here and I'll see if I can later add it. Too bad I can't edit the title though, it sucks.

Free lootboxes, Hearthstone and how Free to play games work. (an attempt to explain F2P games and common misconceptions regarding them )

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:19 PM PST

I imagine some of you have seen the front page post about Overwatch giving free lootboxes and the reactions within it, in regards to why HS should or should not do such giveaways.
There is one common thing among those that claim that HS players should not expect such things. Overwatch needs to be bought, in order for a player to play it, while HS is free to play. As such everything we get is ..well, free and we shouldn't exaggerate in asking for more.
So it struck me. Many players do not understand what a free to play game is or how it works, and think that the word free is used in its literal sense.
This is my attempt to help you understand the basic principles of the type of game you are playing.

What is a free 2 play game?
A free to play game is one that allows you to access a portion of its content without paying and has no monetary requirements to join it.
That seems unproductive for the companies developing them, how do they make money then?
Its quite simple really. While there is no entrance fee and a good portion of the game is available at no cost there are limitations as to what a player can do without paying. Those limitations regard mostly cosmetic and or rare items( depending on the kind of game and their developer, the limitations vary quite a bit). Such obstacles can be surpassed by the players by buying said cosmetic or rare items ( in case of HS card packs are what are used) from an in game shop. These are called micro-transactions and are what allow developers to create and continue supporting free to play games.
As it has been proven (LoL and HS being bright examples), micro-transactions are more than enough to sustain the developing company and their game, while allowing a big portion of its playerbase to enjoy free access to it.
But why must few pay while most don't? Aren't those that are not paying freeloaders?
Turns out they are anything but that. In order for an online game to exist and thrive, a big playerbase is required. The more players play a game the more competition is provided to them and of course the more fun ( if you are playing with your friends). So where do those "F2P" enter in this equation? Well, they provide the majority of the population of the game. Which of course helps with the basic prerequisite of the existence of an online game.
Basically "F2P" players are part of the product being sold. ( even in ads the number of players playing the game will be used as an incentive for new players).
But the developers make no money out of them, wont that hurt them in the long run?
Seems not. Different developers have created different methods to try and entice even those that do not want to pay to contribute to the games economy, even slightly. The most obvious case in Hearthstone is the Welcome Bundle:

If you're a veteran player looking to add more Classic cards to your collection, the Welcome Bundle is an incredible deal for the price!

It was offered not only to new players but to veterans too. And by that of course they meant those that had not bought many or any packs so far, using cash.
Some researches have shown that the introduction of gambling or gambling like, elements will also entice F2P players to start spending money on the game. Effectively turning them to paying customers.

So what does all this has to do with the free stuff anyway?
Well, free stuff is what developers give to F2P players ( and not only) to motivate them into continuing playing the game.
Since ,as I wrote above, the more players play the game the more chances the game has to be successful.
In HS we get roughly 60 packs per year, free of charge. ( 48 classic, one per week. Plus about 12 from expansions, 6 per).
(Whether that is too little, too much or just enough is not the point of this post. That is for each of you to decide on your own.).
It seems free stuff is very important to F2P games too as it contributes to the maintenance or growth of their playerbase.
So next time you will think how entitled a F2P player is, or how Free the game you are playing is, think twice.

Legend with Burgle Rogue

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 02:03 PM PST

Just wanted to share a silly deck that got me to legend this month. It is a tempo deck that revolves around Ethereal Peddler. The main combo is to generate a lot of random class cards and reduce their costs by 2.

Decklist

Proof

Matchup stats (from rank 4 to legend)

A few funny moments I had while playing the deck

For me, the deck is very fun due to the unexpected turns you can have with all the randomly generated cards. In addition to the burgles, it has Lotus Agents to discover cards that sometimes have a huge impact.

Grand crusader was mediocre, and I'm not sure whether an auctioneer would have been better in its place. Shaku was okay because he gives a proactive play on turn 3 besides SI agent, and he sometimes even got to attack multiple times. Prep + Burgle is actually a good combo if you play Ethereal Peddler right after.

I'd say the worst matchup is pirate warrior, though I faced plenty of dragon warriors thankfully. The best matchups seem to be slower decks like renolock, priest, and jade druid. That is very visible from the stats. The deck is bad against miracle rogue partly because burgles will give rogue cards that won't have their costs reduced by Ethereal Peddler.

Thank you

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 07:40 PM PST

I started playing Hearthstone on February this year and well all I gotta say is Thank you Blizzard, for making such an awesome game.

I've had such a blast playing this game, starting with a budget tempo mage then saving enough dust to make a cheap Kibler's reno shadowform priest (before Standard hit) and now just playing jade shenanigans, some burgle rogue and reno decks.

Anyway haha thanks Blizzard for making a game where I can play a couple of games every day and have fun with it, it's been a while where I've been hyped for new cards to be revealed or released. I know the game is not perfect and sometimes there is a lot of rng involved but I still enjoy this game no matter what and I hope you can learn from your mistakes and make this game better :)

Happy feast of Winterveil to Blizzard and to everyone!

Album

Greetings! There are two huge announcements that I must share with you. First off, we are rounding up the greatest in our "/r/customhearthstone Best of 2016 Awards" with categories like: "Best card", "Best set" and "Most likely to have been in a set this year". Make sure to nominate your favorite!

Secondly, one of the most ambitious project that we've ever seen on our subreddit has finally been released. I'm talking of course about the fully voice-acted Winterveil Wonderland Expansion that was lead by /u/Frostivus. I can't possibly give enough credit to everyone that was involved in this project, but this was definitely a team effort. Well done! Here is the original post.

What card do you hate dealing with the most?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 11:05 AM PST

As a rogue main, mine has got to be Spirit Wolves. There's just no clean and efficient method of dealing with these on curve. Nothing irks me more than Spirit Wolves. I can deal with a tunnel trogg or Totem Golem on curve but Spirit Wolves just irks me to no end.

Hearthstone APM tricks (updated for MSG)

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 04:22 AM PST

Hey guys, would just like to share my list of APM tricks for hearthstone. Some of these are require as little as 300apm, making it easy for the average legend player.

-Double Mind Spike (300APM)- As priest, cast shadowform with Auctionmaster Beardo on the board. If you are quick enough you can use mind spike BEFORE the power refreshes and then use it again. Let's you do a surprising 4 damage from 1 card.

-Dirty Rat Brann (~350APM)- This trick makes use of the battlecry resolve bug. When you play Brann Bronzebeard with dirty rat, as soon as the first minion is pulled out of your opponent's hand, you can use shadowstep on Brann to store the second effect. When you play Brann later in the game, he will pull another minion from the opponent's hand. Make sure you DO NOT let the second battlecry trigger or you cannot store the battlecry resolve trigger for this trick to work.

-Dispatch Kodo Cancel Buff (400APM)- This trick is much harder to pull off, as it requires you to play 2 cards within 2 ticks. When playing Dispatch Kodo, you have to right click to cancel the battlecry and play a buff card on it immediately, then play dispatch Kodo before it returns to your hand (as long as the green border is active). If performed correctly, you can now target dispatch kodo battlecry to do extra damage.

-Greater Healing Potion > Pyroblast (800APM)- This trick is extremely hard to pull off within 1 tick, and requires you to have Auchenai Soulpriest / Embrace the Shadow, silence and Mayor Noggenfogger and some way to temporarily steal a card (eg shadow madness). When you steal the opponents minion, play greater healing potion and silence on it. It will be returned to your opponent's board and Mayor Noggenfogger will randomly select a "friendly" target, in this case on enemy character. If you are lucky, it might hit the opponent for 12 damage, which is more than Pyroblast. This trick doesn't always work and can sometimes kill the stolen minion.

There are further APM tricks but they are impossible to pull off without modifying the hearthstone client, since it only accepts instructions within each tick. Post your Favoutite APM tricks below!
