Today marks the one year anniversary of the addition of the most requested Hero to HotS, the Archlich of Naxxramas, along with many other titles, Kel'Thuzad!

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 10:34 AM PDT

And the day I joined the ascended memes of the past.

I know you crazy kids are excited about the release of Mephisto (I am too!), but don't forget that last year when we were at last granted our eternal rewards in form of Kel'Thuzad, who continues to be a powerhouse player (if you're good at him and not countered, of course), even after suffering some nerfs and people giving him the wrong abbreviation.

He was first announced last year at Gamescon with a wonderful animated trailer, that showed off some additional skins (based on the orignal Warcraft III Scourge Heroes) and the Call of Kel'Thuzad event.

His Spotlight video caps itself off with the Kel'Thuzad copypasta, despite the fact that it wasn't really copypasta because I typed it out every time, and I can still do it too goddamn it.

We were also teased with a unique series of videos, "Resurrecting Kel'Thuzad," which was to give us insight into the process by which characters are brought into HotS. It was a pretty good series, I'd link the playlist but for some strange reason it only includes the first two episodes. Mr. Blizzard pls. So here are the episodes, one, two, three, four, and five.

Alright, that's enough of that, I have some lords of hatred to freeze. Enjoy your matches today, and don't forget to obey the call of the Archlich of Naxxramas, esteemed Lich Lord of the Plaguelands, Commander of the Dread Necropolis, Master and Foudnder of the Cult of the Damned, Formerly of the Council of the Six, Creator of the Abomination, Corrupter of the Sunwell, Summoner of Archimonde the Defiler, Betrayer of Humanity, Hearthstone Enthusiast, and Majordomo to the Lich King himself, Kel'Thuzad!

The Spell Power Rework needs to be Revisited - Creates Dumb Situations

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 11:19 AM PDT

Yesterday, the HOTS DEV team dropped a massive fundamental shift in how Spell Power is applied and while a few threads have touched on it, I feel like the underlying issue has not got enough light.

One of the features I like most about Heroes of the Storm when comparing it to other Mobas is how it attempts to be relatively intuitive -

What do I mean by this?

In League of Legends, when your supporting, if you land a sick combo, the optimal play is often to sit there and wait for your ADC to catch up to you and claim the 'last hit' in order to optimize the scenario for your team. Everything in your body says to murder the enemy you have just outplayed, but you have to sit there, wait, and even sometimes die if your ADC is bad because they need to claim the sacred 'last hit gold' in the name of getting fed.

In HOTS, with the exception of a couple heroes, claiming the kill is almost always right and generally what the team should be doing, this is intuitive to me (and I'd argue most people who like HOTS).

What does this have to do with the Spell Power Rework?

Be me, Garrosh. We also have an Ana, "Hi Grandma!" and let's also imagine a helpless ally hero, Illidan ,who after an unfortunate attempt at 1 v 5'ing the enemy team went south, narrowly escaping death thanks to a clutch 'Into the Fray' by Yours Truly, is now the target of the enemy Kael-thas' Pyroblast!

Fear not though young Illidan! For my big brain was 10-steps ahead of them and had already been walloping the Enemy Kael'thas with my Oppressor talent to ensure that, in combination with Gram Gram's Mind-numbing Agent, that the Pyroblast would be so weak at point of contact that you would surely survive this fateful encounter.

Knowing his days in the Nexus were numbered, Kael'thas throws out a final pathetic combo, living-bomb the Ana, Flamestrike sizzilin' beneath me and Gram Gram, then a Trait'ed Gravity Lapse to hold us in place. Knowing our victory was drawing near, Gram Gram and I comboed our sprays to make Kael'thas know that his spells, which normally are backed by the force of a million burning flamers, now had stopping power reduced to that of a wet napkin.

But what's this? Something my massive brain didn't account for? Illidan notices our scuttle with the Evil Wizard had left him vulnerable and realizes he can once again be the hero his team never asked for and activates 'The Hunt' targeting the enemy Kael'thas. Flying into battle, Pyroblast still hot in pursuit, Flamestrike and Living Bomb both nearing their boiling point, Illidan demolishes the nerd who was at 19 Convection stacks no less.

"What have you done?" Shrieks the decrepit Shrike.

For you see, in death, Kael'thas had been freed of the spell-dampening shackles that we had bound him in, no longer being reduced by 80 Spell Power, his spells once again stoked to their full glory incinerated our team.

In Conclusion

In my opinion, good and intuitive game design would make it so that killing the opponent should never punish your own team to the extent it can now. I shouldn't have to tell a Kerrigan to not finish her combo so I can slap an enemy with Garrosh so that their spells are weaker upon impact. I shouldn't take more damage because an enemy died instead of was maimed when I attempted to lower their spell power with an ability.

It is very likely this change was made because from a coding standpoint, keeping track of individual projectiles is probably not efficient, but if it means making the game so unintuitive that you have to start going against your gut to play correctly then I think we should consider other options.

tl;dr

Sometimes the correct play is now not to kill the enemy because reducing their spell power might be more impactful if they've already launched some delayed spells, which is non-intuitive game design in my opinion.

Alarak's price reduction

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 05:04 AM PDT

Why did Blizzard stop to mention such changes in patch notes? Decided to check the collection and of course found a hero with price reduction. So Alarak now costs 7000 instead of 10000.

DON'T pick a second healer when you saw a Tyrande pick since she is a POSSIBLE healer now

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 12:38 PM PDT

After the rework of Tyrande, I believe she is can now be called a Healer Support! Even though I missed the epic owl snipe from Tyrande, I think the current Tyrande is a very interesting healer in the game.

She's now a decent healer, with a stun, a true scouting owl (since cd reduced), and a focus-fire trait (even if it's only -15% for now). She's the only one in the game (for now) with a global-5-man-heal (Shadow Stalker is now Stealth and Heal all ally Heroes). Based on the team comp, she's still able to produce a fairly good amount of damage. Her kits and talents are really ok if not very good.

I can see her healing potential is not as powerful as White-the-OP-mane, Deckard, or Alex. Especially when the Heroic not yet pop up. But she still a decent healer along with amazing kits.

TLDR: Just treat her as a normal healer and give it a chance. She's no longer the one that most players think she is.

Blizzard, please give unused Vikings talents some love! We've had no talent diversity for years.

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 04:08 PM PDT

For anyone unfamiliar with vikings, this is generally the only viable build for vikings.

I understand vikings are scary to touch from a design perspective, but I'm not even asking for strong talents.

I just want the unchosen talents to have some simple buffs, so I can occasionally try them out and not have to think, "I'm never picking these talents ever again."

Blizzzard, I get that we may never get a Viking rework or skin but can we at least just get some talent diversity? <3

Triglav can be stealthed and keeps stealth when shooting

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 03:57 AM PDT

Video demo: https://youtu.be/zYtING6I16Y

Due to a new bug with Tyrande's Shadowstalk you can now stealth the Triglav and it remains stealthed when you enter it. Using Driver's AA or skills (except exit and swap seats) will unstealth it but the Gunner can do whatever he wants without breaking stealth.

Too bad her stealth only lasts for 10 seconds. After the stealth rework (nerf), most stealthing abilities (Shadowstalk, Dust of Disappearance) could as well last indefinitely.

Now I wonder if this bug works with Gall too.

Map objective channeling times?

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 06:49 PM PDT

As the title says. I can't find this information anywhere, what's the exact time in seconds to channel an objective ( Cursed Hollow, Towers of Doom, Dragon Shire, etc) If it's even a standart channeling time for all of them.

Ps: Im asking this cause I mainly play Medivh and his Ley Line Seal lasts for 3 seconds (Baseline without the lvl 20), made the decision of blowing it on a lost Teamfight, wondering if i could have snagged us the last temple and won us the game.

Tyrande's new Shadowstalk applies stealth to Dragon Knight when it's "owned" but not yet captured

Like so.

There are no mechanical implications that I can think of, but it's certainly a weird quirk of its implementation.

Mephisto able to reveal enemies with 10 sec cooldown if Consume Souls (R) gets interrupted

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 01:07 AM PDT

Intended or not, interrupting Mephisto's Consume Souls triggers short (10 seconds) cooldown, but still reveals enemy team. Can be abused with Stitches' friendly hook if coordinated via voice chat.
