Popular opinion: Halo 3 has a better multiplayer than Halo 5

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 11:23 AM PDT

Let's be real. Rather than attack people for being blinded by nostalgia or other things that are irrelevant to the quality of the franchise, I'll instead just speak about why Halo 3 is better, and why it was more popular.

  • Simplicity is better than Complexity. Halo combat has always been about 3 tools - your rifle, your grenades, and your 360 movement. It wasn't a sprint/dive fest, it was a classic run and gun shooter. Now we have all these abilities that muddy Halo's core. ADS, Sprint, Thrust Pack, Clamber, Hover, Slide, Assassinate, Ground Pound, Shoulder Bash. These abilities were mostly lifted from other franchises for the sole purpose of pleasing the mainstream. They decided to include Sprint in Halo 5 because every other FPS game is using it. That's not innovating, that's chasing trends This superficial complexity has gutted Halo's other core elements, as I'll explain further.

  • The lack of sprint made maps extremely easy to balance for. Designers didn't have to worry about Sprint making it too easy to escape, or too quick to pick up power weapons from spawn. Simplicity helped Bungie craft and balance the greatest Halo maps we've ever seen. But now? maps are "hyper-balanced", often prioritizing claustrophobia, ultra segmented design, action every 2 seconds approach. Maps were designed to give casters in competitive streams more stuff to say in a short amount of time. This design philosophy has been terrible for Halo maps. It's no mistake that Reach, 4 and 5's map design has suffered greatly because they had to compensate for sprint as much as possible.

  • Complete lack of dev made BTB maps, nuff said.

  • With the above point, vehicles feel the least relevant out of any Halo game. Infinite sprint and dash has nullified not just vehicles, but the sandbox itself.

  • Halo 3 prioritized map control, teamwork, strategy. The slower games made for more deliberate and skill based matches. It wasn't ultra sweaty, it gave players time to explore the sandbox and formulate their own approach.

  • Here are some more overt reasons. Casual offerings are terrible. Game was missing major features at launch. "Free" DLC that was apparently given to us because of REQ packs was just features that should've been there at launch, or just reskinned maps. Armour and emblem customization completely ruined by REQ packs. Of course, no split screen. There's so much obviously wrong with Halo 5 MP that people have just decided not to bring it up in comparisons because it's apparently too obvious a flaw.

What do I propose? Remove enhanced movement. That will make designing and balancing Halo maps far easier. It will save vehicles and actually make them more relevant again. Stop designing claustrophobic maps. Actually trust players to enjoy themselves in open 4v4 maps that aren't hype balanced or force action every 3 seconds. Slower gameplay isn't a bad thing. It gives more room for counterplay, strategy, exploration. Halo needs its identity back. It's been slowly losing sales and playerbase since Reach decided to gut the core of Halo.

Mint Blitz - SLAYER - The Final Halo 5 Montage - 2000 Hours of Gameplay

Can't find a single BTB match (Australia).

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 09:33 PM PDT

Title.

I was really looking forward to this playlist, and from this sub I can see many others were as well, but I haven't been able to find a single match after almost an hour of searching.

Anyone else experiencing this? Are 343i ever going to let people choose servers? Any fixes that actually work?

What’s he enteral opinion on CE multiplayer?

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 06:01 PM PDT

I see all these arguments about 5 is fine or it sucks. Go back to 2, or 3, or no those suck more than 5. Or Reach did bad stuff with armor lock and whatnot vs Reach did fine. But I never hear anything about CE. Competitively and casually how do people like it? I find myself only playing CE or 5. CE for the simple easy nature of it, and 5 for the complexity. I don't play 2 or 3 because notion and sensitivity and aim just seems off and floaty to me

MCC Action Sack is kinda lame compared to Halo 5

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 08:13 PM PDT

The games in Halo 5 are so much more unique and fun. MCC is just a specific gun. That's the entire action sack. Where are golf type game modes from Halo 5?

Halo 5 announcer says "Fabulous"?

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 09:30 AM PDT

I was playing Halo 5 recently and ran into a weird announcer interaction. I was playing Extermination in the new Elimination playlist and heard the announcer say "Fabulous" after 4 people (2 from each team) committed suicide within 5 seconds of each other. Here's a clip of it happening. It all happens in the last 10 seconds. "Fabulous" clip Is this new? Or, has this always been in the game? I tried googling it and didn't find anybody else talking about it.

We need JIP, this is how it should be done

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 05:22 PM PDT

JIP (Join in Progress) is sorely needed in this game but I know that no one wants to join a late game especially if it's a losing game.

We need JIP to be completely optional and we need real incentives for players to opt in to it. There can be no downside for players using JIP or they simply won't use it.

What I suggest is that 343 gets an XP system in order. Give players who opt in for JIP a permanent 15% XP bonus for all matchmaking games as long as they are opted in for JIP. Place the 'Opt In' option somewhere on the screen with all of the playlists so that it isn't buried in menus. Everyone can easily see it and everyone still has the option to say no.

In addition, add in avatars and nameplates as rewards for players who have joined a game late and got a victory. Do NOT record losses or deaths for players who have joined late. This will give them reason to quit.

I'll explain the reason for JIP here. MCC has 4 multiplayer games to balance when it comes to playlists. People aren't always going to get exactly what they want. Cross-game playlists add to this. Because we can't have 50 playlists to cover every single thing that players may want to play, there's always going to be players that quit because they didn't get what they wanted. 343 can try and give as many options for people to help reduce quitting but the nature of MCC and it's population size will prevent their efforts from doing a whole lot.

343 is dealing with a game that hasn't really been done before so it's almost like new territory for them. That's the reality here. Balancing playlists, maps and modes across 4 games that are all under 1 roof has not been done before. They need to do something like JIP because it's one of the few options out there that can resolve this issue for this type of game.

343 can punish quitters all they want but it won't solve the problem. It will just be and endless game of whack-a-mole. The solution here is to reward players for doing something good instead of punishing them for something bad. People will quit games and for a plethora of valid reasons including real life. In Hardcore modes, this is a different story. But for Social, players should not be punished, they should be rewarded for helping solve a problem - if they choose to opt in.

Do you think Steve Downes will voice Chief in the TV series?

Posted: 05 Sep 2018 11:37 AM PDT

Not long ago, it was revealed that Master Chief will be a central character in the upcoming Halo TV series on Showtime here. Soon after, Steve Downes retweeted the news. This gave me, and many other fans, the impression that maybe Steve will be voicing Chief in the series. Do you think that Steve will be voicing Chief in the TV series?
