What mods are considered the best/standard by the community?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:37 PM PDT

Overall, been loving Civ6, but a few things here and there make the game feel a little bit off. I've been tinkering around quite a bit with mods to try and get a slightly more balanced game, but since I've only started playing a few weeks ago, it's hard to tell which are best (Googling this is even more confusing, as people who are discussing mods will often times use a bunch of acronyms for things and I'll have no clue what they're talking about or referencing).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Tundra Starts : Why?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 10:23 AM PDT

----DISCLAIMER : All of this post doesn't apply if you're playing Peter----

My thesis is that tundra starts are entirely pointless and should be entirely removed from the game, with some very rare exceptions.

I play a lot of MP with my brother and some friends. We always tend to reroll starts quite a lot at the beginning of our sessions, so that everybody has a fair chance. After a while, we set some ground rules to ask for a reroll, so you can't ask for them just because you dont like the luxury resources available at your start. But one thing was never put in question : a tundra start is an instant reroll for everyone.

Now don't get me wrong, there are reasons you could want to settle a city in the tundra : some lux you don't have late in the game, a natural wonder that's particularly well-situated, or the chance to build Amundsen-Scott. But who, in their right state of mind, wants their capital city to be in a foodless, productionless hell that will put you behind everyone for the first 50-70 turns? Grasslands is very good, Plains is very good, Jungle can be fucking amazing, hell, even a Desert start with some hills and flood plains is strong and makes you want to go for the Petra dream. But tundra is always irrevocably shit and will be detrimental to your enjoyment of the early game.

I don't want tundra to be removed from the game, as I stated before. I just want an option that forces the game to remove your starting settler at least 5 tiles away from the snowy hells. If you like the challenge and think you can handle a tundra start, then by all means untick that option, go for it, more power to you. Every civilization can be handled even when their starting bias is taken away from them (landlocked England/Indonesia for instance), but no Civ save Peter will thrive in tundra, and it will make you want to move out of there ASAP.

So my point is : either make tundra starts as viable as other starts (which would be very weird) or give us the option to remove them entirely form our games.

I'd be glad to hear y'all's opinions on tundra starts.

Iron and Blood: My First Civ Experience

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:54 PM PDT

Civ V - First Game. Enjoy (apologies for poor spacing on mobile):

I am Bismarck.

Honor is my policy.

I am pure power in human form.

I look down upon my kingdom and omnisciently cry: "Teutons! With our Iron and our Blood, upon only us will the sun soon shine!"

I watch with joy as horde after horde of my units march, for I know these brave marauders will one day make all foreign land ours.

Barbarians are no match - they perish in mere instants, not a single cry heard.

The City States, they freeze in terror, plead for mercy, and throw their wealth at my feet.

My rivals bow upon first sight. They are not fools, for they can see the ruin that lies beyond even the slightest transgression.

Our Motherland has been strategically placed; it is nestled in a valley protected by mountain ranges.

My citizens know they are safe.

These mighty people of pure Aryan blood...they erect monuments, pave roads, and plow fields with dutiful German pride.

It is there that a mighty library is built.

Peace brings prosperity;

literature, science, and culture thrive.

Mighty Berlin has become worthy of its name.

I have now assembled and dispersed a military of 9 units across distant valleys.

My men can hear the northern cities nearby;

so near that they can almost see them,

can almost feel them.

Their hearts yearn for war,

for honor,

for blood...

It is time.

We slaughter one last tribe of barbarians in preparation of what is to come.

They are invigorated, and so am I.

We march North and past our temporary Ally, for it is the only way through.

There is Ocean to the East,

Mountains to the West.

We will destroy them soon enough.

But for now their defenses are strong, and the Northerners are weak.

It is through their slaughter that we will acquire the materials and the strength we need.

We must only wait for the remaining troops.

Well, wait a second...

Our Southern ally has suddenly expanded.

My lagging men can no longer pass.

I had no time for those "open" territory treaties - those pitiful "promises" of inferior men.

We are Germans, and it is necessary that we reign only with Iron and Blood.

They will not be united; they are trapped.

My stomach drops.

Fear builds.

All we can do is attack.

I make the decisive call, and with it yell our Battle Cry:

"WE HAVE COME,

WITH OUR IRON AND WITH ARYAN MIGHT,

TO RAVAGE YOUR CITY,

AND FEAST ON YOUR BLOOD...

FOR GERMANY!!!"

The fighting ensues.

The blood flies.

But it is not the blood of our enemies...

And, to my horror, I watch,

as quickly as they spawned,

my men fall...

The war is over.

I am Speechless.

I Rage.

I Quit.

Would you buy a leaders pack DLC ? What civs need new leaders?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:19 AM PDT

If a DLC with say 4 to 8 new leaders for existing civs would be released, would you be interested in buying it?

I would love it, of course I use mod leaders too but I would love a Firaxis made pack too.

Also what civs would benefit from a new leader?

I would like an industrialist leader for America and good ol' Napoleon for France.

Civ 4 Lover, Civ 5 Hater, Civ 6 ?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 08:05 PM PDT

I've been considering getting Civ 6 now that it has been out long enough to see significant discounts periodically. With the news today that Civ 6 is heading to Switch before the end of the year, my interest is even higher.

I played Civ 4 a ton. I thought it was the best Civ game to date. When Civ 5 was released, I was super excited about the idea of no stacking military units. However, when I played Civ 5, I quickly grew to dislike it. I hated the city-states and felt like it was too difficult to expand your civ. With all the city-states, I could rarely build more than 3 cities and if I did manage to build a fourth, the costs were stupidly high. Putting nearly 60 hours into the game, I never did finish a game; I don't even think I made it to the Medieval age in any game I played as I was always tweaking with the set-up to try and find something I liked.

So here I am trying to decide if I should invest in Civ 6. How similar/different is it to Civ 4 and Civ 5?

Overall I like R&F but I really think governors need an overhaul

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:05 AM PDT

Been getting back into Civ since R&F launched earlier this year and I've played a handful of game over the last couple of weeks. I've enjoyed it a lot and think R&F brings some nice touches to vanilla Civ VI, all of it except for the governors.

The problem I find with the governors is that they aren't all that interesting, most of them are very circumstantial and therefore so is their usefulness. Magnus is arguably one of the best governors even after they nerfed his chop ability, but the others? Liang/Pingala are nice but their later abilities seem geared for specific city types; moving them is problematic so it just seems better to keep them in their host city.

For the record, I'm not a "pro" Civ player, I generally play on Prince/King difficulty; I consider myself a competent player even if I don't care for playing on harder difficulties. I say this in the event there is something I've overlooked with govs that I may not be appreciating, if that's the case feel free to correct me.

That said, in my experience with R&F, governors just leave a lot to be desired. They're good for loyalty and good for small bonuses but otherwise? Too circumstantial to be significant other than the aforementioned good governors like Magnus/Pingala. Their upgrades are underwhelming and their abilities often require committing to one side or the other (i.e., Amani the Diplomat who is either really good for CSes or for your own cities), limiting her usefulness.

Honestly I'd rather deal with ONE governor for the entire game with upgrades that mattered and whose effects were felt rather than 6 governors with tiny benefits whose effects barely register if they register at all.

Were it up to me I'd rather see governors overhauled so that rather than one governor governing a single city, they oversee a group of them. Or perhaps, put more simply, one governor oversees your entire empire but with an upgrade tree that makes sense / significantly more fun; in that sense a single governor might be akin to a social policy from Civ V.

The current system works okay, it doesn't get in the way and for that I'm thankful, but it really could be so much better / more enjoyable.

I welcome any constructive feedback and discussion on this topic.

edit: sorry for some of the repetitive wording, I wrote this way past my bedtime but I just had to get it off my chest haha

Newbie Civ player who needs tips for civ 6 games

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 09:07 AM PDT

Hey guys, I am a player new to the Civilization series (only 20 hours on civ 6 bought 1 week ago) and I seem to struggle to figure out certain mechanics such as the citizen working tiles mechanic and gold maintenance. I would like to try to win a game of Civ on prince in my first serious run so i would like some pointers. Thanks and all hail Gandhi the nuke lord.

Was there ever an update on CivEDU?

Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:25 AM PDT

As a teacher, I would love to start an after school Civ club, and remember reading articles about Sid Meyer trying to make a version of 5 that would be available to high school students, although the last article I found was from 2016. Anyone know of an updates on it?

Having been a huge Civ fan, I was a little disappointed with VI. I stated playing Total War and got the "Just one more turn" buzz again. Civ will always be my first love but curious if anyone else feels the same?
