The Burning of Teldrassil happens slightly differently in the novella

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:35 AM PDT

From Red Shirt Guy :

"In the novella version, when Sylvanas says "burn it" Saurfang is horrified and intervenes. He basically calls Sylvanas a monster and tells the orcs manning the catapults to stand down and disregard Sylvanas' orders.

They don't listen, and the novella ends with Saurfang watching the tree burn, flashing back to his actions in Shattrath during the rise of the Horde and deciding there's no redemption for him or the Horde, nothing can atone for what Sylvanas has done, and what he failed to prevent. He'll carry this guilt to his dying day "and he hopes that day will come soon."

A list of characters Blizzard killed for dual-wielding

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 03:10 AM PDT

After more than 10 years, unopened and undisturbed.

Is Blizzard taking notes from EA when it comes to lore? Why do we have to pay extra for a complete story?

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:54 AM PDT

Apparently, according to the collectors edition, Saurfang opposed Sylvanas on the beach, tried to get the soldiers to stand down and not burn the tree, and then stood there for hours.

Then afterwards, he said Sylvanas is going down the same path as Garrosh and she explained her reasoning and he agreed. Also, apparently Sylvanas knew Malf was alive which was one of the major reasons she chose to burn the tree.

Blizzard what the fuck? Where is any of this in game? Why isn't it in the damn cinematic? It would have happened in there, but you edit it out and retcon the Warbringer short in some text that we have to pay for later? What kind of story telling is that?

Is there any mention of Calia and the Desolate Council and what happened that day in game? It already happened in the timelines, because it happens before Sylvanas burns the tree, so where the fuck is there evidence of it in game? Why can't we see what happened? Why wouldn't we be there when it was happening?

Why can't we get full complete stories IN GAME where we don't have to go digging around to make sense of your confusing story? Are you just making bad decisions and then deciding "oh wait I thought of something better" RETCON HAMMER DOWN Complete story available for 14.99$ - now with in depth reasoning as to why everyone appears to have lost their marbles!

You can have your damn books and your extras and whatever the hell else you want, but add a mini version of that to the game.

I want to see Sylvanas ordering the attack on the Desolate Council, I want to see Saurfang call out Sylvanas, I want to see him standing on that beach in horror.

Put these events in game, and supplement them with the books. The books will always provide more detail, more motivations, obviously we can't read minds, but this idea that "ahaha people will buy the books if we hide the lore in there!" is so backwards. People who read the books won't suddenly go "no thanks, I have a condensed version of this story in game now! No need for me to read anymore, I have completed changed my enjoyment of reading because of this ingame questline!", and for players who want the lore but won't buy the book (like me) will just go online and find Nobbels video explaining the entire story, which means they get no money anyway.

TL;DR - Stop gating vital story elements behind paywalls that are separate from the game

EDIT: So do the downvotes mean people like having the story given to them in pieces that need to be paid for separately? Or do people just not care about the lore? Cause every top post from the last 2 days has been about Sylvanas being written like shit when in reality, she isn't as insane as we think, and Saurfang isn't as much of a spineless bitch as we thought.

EDIT 2: Yes, some of the lore content released later is free, but it shouldn't be released weeks later after an event happens and completely change what happened during those events.

"Sylvanas is too evil. She doesn't represent the Horde"

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:14 AM PDT

Damn it all.

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:41 AM PDT

The Horde is traditionally described as a band of exiles and refugees. But as of today, the Alliance actually has more homeless races than the Horde.

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:41 AM PDT

Here's how I did the math (feel free to disagree with my logic):

I give 0, 0.5, or 1 point to a race depending on the status of their home. If they are homeless and refugees, I give them a 0. If it's a grey area, for example if they have a new temporary home or merely exiled, I give them a 0.5, and if they still have the home that they built for themselves, I give them a 1.

Alliance

  • Human - fully in control of Stormwind: 1 point.
  • Dwarf - fully in control of Ironforge: 1 point.
  • Night Elf - lost Teldrassil and surrounding forests, and are refugees without a home: 0 points.
  • Gnome - retook parts of Gnomeregan, but not all of it: 0.5 points.
  • Draenei - lost Argus (and Draenor) but have made a new home for themselves on the Exodar: 0.5 points.
  • Worgen - lost Gilneas and are refugees: 0 points.
  • Pandaren - have access to Pandaria and the Wandering Isle: 1 point.
  • Lightforged Draenei - lost their home but have a space of their own on the Vindicaar: 0.5 points.
  • Void Elves - while Silvermoon stands, they are definitely exiles and would not be able to return: 0.5 points.
  • Total: 5.5 points.

Horde

  • Orc - lost their homeworld, but Orgrimmar definitely is home now: 0.5 points.
  • Undead - lost the Undercity in the War of Thorns: 0 points.
  • Tauren - fully in control of Mulgore: 1 point.
  • Troll - fully in control of the Echo Isles: 1 point.
  • Blood Elf - while Silvermoon was in part destroyed by the Scourge, they are still fully in control of it: 1 point.
  • Goblin - lost Kezan: 0 points.
  • Pandaren: have access to Pandaria and the Wandering Isle: 1 point.
  • Highmountain Tauren: they still have Highmountain: 1 point.
  • Nightborne: Suramar is still there: 1 point.
  • Total: 6.5 points.

Once the Kul Tirans, Zandalari, Dark Iron Dwarves and Mag'Har orcs join the Horde and Alliance, this will even out as the Mag'Har lost their home world while the other three are still in control of their homes.

Don't let the fact that Sylvanas burned the world tree distract from the fact that the Alliance lost on home court with an All-star Druid, All-star priest, and all the trees on their team

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:07 PM PDT

Alliance main, and it does hurt to see Teldrassil go, but destroying two capital cities is the most exciting this to happen in this game since BC and Wrath!

It's a war and Sylvanas isn't a perfect strategist (if she was she would have beat arthas the first time around) so the fact that she burned down an Alliance territory shouldn't be all that unbelievable.

Frick, if WoW dies it's not going to be from the dev's messing things up, it's going to be from the playerbase acting like entitled teenagers that nit pick every little thing that they don't agree with. Let's not forget that Vanilla was completely broke and BC's storyline was 6/10 at best, yet we all loved it cause we loved the game!
