True Gaming Are Games Becoming Better or are Reviewers Becoming More Lenient?

Are Games Becoming Better or are Reviewers Becoming More Lenient?

I was watching the IGN review for GTA 4 when the reviewer mentioned something interesting - they hadn't given a 10 in nearly a decade. I looked it up, and indeed, from Pokemon Red/Blue (1999) to GTA 4 (2008) not a single 10 was given out. source: http://m.ign.com/articles/2018/04/17/how-and-where-to-play-every-modern-ign-1010-game

Of course, thats not to say no good games came out during that time, and some came very close, GTA:SA getting a 9.9/10. Since 2008, IGN has given a 10 to 15 games not including GTA 4. For another point of reference, I visited GameSpot, which is notorious for rarely giving out 10s. Since 1996, they've given out only 15 10/10s. Eleven of them have been given out from 2008 and beyond. source: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gamespots-complete-list-of-1010-reviews-and-how-th/1100-6422955/

So have games really gotten that much better in our time? Or are reviewers simply becoming less critical and more forgiving to certain aspects of games?

The circle of popular online gaming trends

Does it seem to anyone that online games are devolving?
If you think about popular online trends, the type of game is getting less complex.
Eg.
Mmorgs -> team objective shooters -> team free for alls -> battle royale .

Which makes me think what is the next step. Could it be a further simplification back to the classic arena free for all shooter (eg quake 3)? I say yes. Which would mean the trends become circular and an mmorpg return to popularity is likely, which does match current dev trends.

Has anyone else given up on online gaming?

Last time I played games online consistently, my titles of choice were...

Counterstrike 1.6 Unreal Tournament (The OG, and still best IMO) Diablo 2 (Still the best diablo style game IMO) Ages of Empires

I've dipped my toes in the water here and there since then, but nothing has stuck. Some examples of what I tried:

CoD - Friends had me try team deathmatch on various versions throughout the years. Tried some blops Nazi Zombies as well. Zombies is more fun co-op, it makes a shitty online game with no pause, and the main game wasn't as fun as CS or UT to me.

Diablo 3 - IMO this game is complete shit. I beat normal mode and never bothered getting to the other difficulties, it was that bad. Same thing singleplayer, gave up after level 20. I can't believe they took out the ability to PVP or PK. That was some of the most fun I ever had in an online game. Questing with people and some high level person joins our game and hostiles us, then you're on your toes waiting for them, wondering if they'll roast you or if you'll manage to fuck them up. It was like Dark Souls invasions. Which speaking of DS...

Dark Souls - So oneof the main draws of this series for me is the challenge. In fact I take it a few steps further and do stuff like SL1 runs where I'm not allowed to use shields, spells or any healing items. So summoning would ruin that for me. Which leaves me with PVP. It was kind of fun, but I only did it for a few hours spread over a couple of weeks. Tried a few builds, and did alright, but decides PVE is why I play these games, not PVP. Kind of the opposite of D2 for me.

WoW - Had roommates super into it and they bought me three months sub one summer. I didn't enjoy it. I wanted to play as a Warrior with two swords and every fucking group was "omg why didn't you spec shield you're supposed to tank omg." So I said fuck it and tried to play solo. It just wasn't fun to me, it felt tedious more than engaging. Combat felt slower and less twitchy compared to Diablo, and the cheery, colorful world was less engaging. Tried making a new character at one point a year later when blizzard emailed me a free trial, and it was barren where I started, so I just said fuck it.

Quake Live - Seemed like a good way to relive the days of arena shooters as opposed to CoD nonsense. It was fun, and the browser play was convenient. I kind of lost interest, and when I tried to come back to it, it was paid and I didn't care enough to buy into it. I don't feel that competitive streak in gaming the way I did in my teens.

I've been a lot happier with single player games these days.

Currently I'm playing Dark Souls Remastered, Divinity Original Sin, and No Man's Sky. One intense, challenging combat focused game, one tactical turn based RPG, and a chill out and look at the views game.
