[BoTW] I have read all the books for the season pass quests. Can I get the armor without interference? Really early in the game.

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:00 AM PDT

So basically, I brought the switch with me on vacation. I thought I'd to to the stables and get the journals read.

The journals told me the locations of all the items for the season pass but I have just gotten to kakariko to meet impa. Along the way I have activated at least 8 towers so I have a good visibility of the map, 4 hearts and upgraded the stamina bar twice. And I have a ton of shrines marked.

I mainly want all the dlc content first before I do the story.

Am I going the right way? Will I face any difficulty getting those dlc content like the armor and stuff and if anyone can, what is the best armor to go for first that will make getting the rest easier?

On Merging

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:22 AM PDT

Okay, by now we've all seen the big hoopla made about the Zelda Japanese website including BotW, and the comments made by Nintendo. It's pretty clear (to most of us anyway) that this information changes nothing. If anything, it just reiterated what was said in an earlier interview, which has subsequently been forgotten about, or ignored, since then: there is no concrete placement yet, but it is at the end of whichever timeline it's on.

However, the confusion about it is leading to an increase in people's convictions that a merged timeline is the answer, or that such a thing has all but been confirmed. I even saw a video on Nintendo Prime today where they took the quotes that said absolutely nothing new, and called it proof that they were right about a merged timeline. It's getting a little out of hand, if you ask me.

So here's the thing: Hyrule Warriors' merged timeline is non-canon. The reason they did that was to create a game where all of Zelda lore could be put together into one game, a huge fan service. I would put it on the level of fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom, or even Super Smash Bros. It has no bearing on the original material. Tons of franchises do this kind of thing. So while a merged timeline has now happened in a Zelda context, it does not automatically mean it is more likely to happen in canon titles.

From a physics point of view, merged timelines don't make much sense. Parallel universes are completely separate, and can't interact. Of course, we're dealing with a fantasy series here, so I get that rule-bending can occur. But ask yourselves this: why would it?

  1. Because they need the might of multiple Links? No, the goddesses would just pull Link from one timeline to the other, the same way they pulled him from Hyrule in the Oracle games. There's plenty of precedence of other approaches to say this is the least likely reason.

  2. Because someone wishes for it? No, because there's no way they would even KNOW to wish for it. Parallel universes are only a theory in our own world. If someone had the ability to wish for something in real life, how many would wish for the joining of hypothetical timelines? The only way that makes sense is if someone moves from one timeline to another, understands the reality of there being multiple timelines, and their actions lead to this wish being made. Even then, though, I don't see why they would want to do this, rather than achieve their goals in a simpler way.

  3. Because the goddesses do it? Maybe, if there is some sort of cosmic threat which forces their hands. I can't see them doing this unless they absolutely have to, since it would cause a huge mess for very little reason. And that would have to be a very specifically tailored threat to elicit that response. Surely they would just create a new weapon, bestow new powers, or intervene directly before it got to that point, right?

Another topic which has surfaced recently is the fact that The Elder Scrolls series has already done something like a merged timeline, so people are assuming that Zelda could do the same. The phenomenon is known as a "dragon break", a temporal mess which basically splits time into multiple threads for a variable duration, and then collapses these threads back into one, leaving people confused about what reality was the truth.

The theory some are putting out there right now is that Zelda is doing the same thing, presumably with a "Ganon break", if you will, starting from OoT and ending either before, during or shortly after the 10,000 years preceding BotW's 100-year sealing of Calamity Ganon (I don't know if there are other theories about these specifics, but that's what I've gathered). Now, if Nintendo wants to go that way, I guess we can't do anything to stop them. But I personally find it hard to swallow.

When the Downfall timeline was revealed, a lot of people were angry because the events leading to that timeline were not specifically in-game ones. A lot of people liken it to a "what-if" scenario, which it doesn't entirely deserve. I've never really had a problem with it, because I took it to be a use of the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, the very basis for the idea of parallel universes. Link losing in that battle does happen just as much as anything else, because with the Many Worlds Interpretation, everything happens in some universe. A lot of splits are possible, but the games we've played just happen to be in that split. Technically, there is an infinite amount of timelines, and we can only play three of them so far.

The thing is, the death of Link in OoT, while not being one of the events that the game itself can roll credits on, is entirely replicable. I've thought of doing a run through the games where I play them based on timeline placement, and I figured that if I do that, I'd just die in the Ganon fight and move on to Alttp. The Downfall is something you can technically see and play through. When it comes to a merged timeline, though, there's nothing in-game so far that shows it. There are little details and Easter eggs in BotW, but these can easily be explained by the fact there have been 10,000 years for different things to happen. No combination of three references is going to be definitive enough to prove a merge.

If Nintendo chooses to merge timelines, then that would serve as a change to the timeline that the games never mention. Of course, there's an easy way to fix that: make a game before BotW that follows the story of why and how the merge takes place. One possible scenario could be that Ganon defeats Link and Zelda, gathers the Triforce, and there are no sages in place yet to stop him (or Ganon kills them too). He uses the full Triforce to take on the form of Demise, or at least reach that same level, and he openly challenges the gods. This leads to a huge cosmic battle, and somehow Ganon affects the Goddess of Time to the extent that the timelines become unstable, resulting in the merge or at least forcing the goddesses to merge them in order to avoid more damage. Then multiple Links/Zeldas/sages come together and help the goddesses defeat Ganon somehow, bringing him down to the point of being nothing more than a shade of his former self, no longer capable of a full reincarnation (Calamity Ganon). Then the shrine of resurrection is put in place so that Link can be revived in case he ever fails again, giving them time to avoid that same thing from ever happening.

If Nintendo makes that game, I won't be happy with a merge, but I will have to say they at least did it in a cool way. I doubt they would go that route, unless it all happens in a flashback/lore reveal and the game takes place after the fact. And I don't like any of the other options I can think of them doing, or have seen people suggesting. If they don't make a game at all to explain it, though, I think making the merge canon would be irresponsible. It would make the previous splits feel almost pointless, and would itself be pointless since future splits would still be possible (and necessarily already happening, if they are following the Many Worlds Interpretation).

And the thing is, Nintendo just flat out told us they don't even need to worry about placement that much. They talked about their "New Translation" concept in their newest interview, which basically just means that, as they make new games without thinking about the timeline, they can just move games around on the timeline afterward so they make sense, and keep moving titles around however they want later. That's how we got Link's Awakening moved recently. So really, the timeline isn't hampering their creativity in any way. Why bother making such a drastic change as a merge, which would require so much explanation? Instead, all they have to do is say "okay, it goes here." Which isn't difficult at all, since the time gap makes it fit easily into whichever spot they want.

I'm trying to have an open mind with all of this, and to be honest the dragon break thing has me a little less opposed to the idea, but I still think that we can't come to the conclusion that anything put forth about BotW so far is indicating a merged timeline. I hope I've given some food for thought to those who are entertaining the idea, or at least that people found this post at all interesting.

TL;DR: Nothing about BotW's placement has been confirmed yet, and the merged timeline isn't any more likely than it ever was. A merged timeline is theoretically possible, but I doubt it would be done right, or that there would be a point to it. I would rather see discussions about it that aren't just "it's the only thing that makes sense!" because it really isn't.
