Evo - Some facts about past champs

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:33 PM PDT

Just some random facts about Evo champs and runner-ups.

This will be the 10th Evo of the "modern" era, which I'm defining as the start of Street Fighter 4 until present (and not counting this year's Evo Japan).

Past Evo winners of SF IV and V:

Daigo (x2)
Fuudo
Infiltration (x2)
Xian
Luffy
Momochi
Tokido

Every past Evo winner is in the Top 32 seeds this year. Highest seed is Infiltration (2nd), and lowest is Luffy (25th).

Infiltration is the only player to have won both a SFIV Evo and a SFV Evo.

The first possible battle of past champs will occur in Top 64, winners side, with Xian and Luffy meeting up if they hold their seeds. The following round would see Infiltration and Fuudo go at it if they hold their seeds.

In the modern era, only one player has won back to back Evos, with Daigo taking the first two Street Fighter IV tournaments back in '09 and '10.

Two past champs also have a second place finish under their belts. Tokido placed second the year Xian won, and Fuudo placed second during Infiltration's second championship win. The latter is the only time two past champs went at it in Grand Finals.

Aside from the past champs, Justin Wong, GamerBee, and Bonchan have all been runner-up, and are all seeded top 32 this year. GamerBee in fact came in second twice, first to Infiltration during his first win, and then to Momochi.

Other notable runner-ups who are lurking below Top 32 seeds this year are Ricki Ortiz (runner up in Daigo's second championship run), and Punk (runner up to Tokido last year).

The only winner or runner-up who is no longer around appears to be Latif, who placed second the year Fuudo won.

Despite Japan's overall dominance of Street Fighter, two Japanese players have never battled in Grand Finals. Having said that, Japan has only been shut out of Grand Finals one time, when Infiltration beat GamerBee. A Japanese player has won Evo five times.

Characters who have won Evo.

Ryu (x2)
Fei Long
Akuma (x2)
Gen
Rose
Ken (mostly, although Momochi switched to Evil Ryu in Grand Finals)
Nash

Runner-up characters:

Rufus (x2)
C. Viper
Adon
Akuma
Sagat
Elena
R. Mika
Karin

There has never been a mirror match in Grand Finals.

Not only is it hard to win back to back Evos, it's hard even to make it back to Top 8 after winning it all. Daigo did it both years after he won (repeating after his the first year, and placing 4th after his second win), and Infiltration made top 3 the year after his first win. Other than that, no winner has even made it back to Top 8 the year following his win, and it hasn't happened since 2013.

Daigo has the most top 8 appearances, with five. Infiltration, GamerBee, and Tokido all have four top 8's.

"Out of nowhere" winners are rare. Not counting Daigo in the first year of SFIV (and he actually had placed top 8 in previous versions of the game), only three players won Evo in their first trip to Top 8. Those three were Fuudo, Xian, and Luffy.

Anyone interested in a third strike tournament?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:47 AM PDT

Now that we have the Street Fighter Anniversary edition on PC, I just wanted to test the waters and see if there was like maybe, 12+ people interested in meeting up one day for a tournament? Comment if you are, if we get enough people I'll start organizing it.

How to deal with surfs as a beginner (psychologically)

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:08 AM PDT

At Rookie and Bronze I find that roughly half of my matches are with opponents on long win streaks with accounts just a day or two old who destroy me in seconds. I have no time to really learn from them, it's really just too one sided.

The problem is not the loss, I don't care about LP, but psychologically it's really demoralising, it kinda feels like the game is punishing you for being new and trying to learn it.

Any tips on not letting it phase you?

How good is Rashid?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:34 AM PDT

I picked up Street Fighter 5: AE about a month ago since my brother gave me his PS4 since he got the pro (I've always been a Xbox guy) and the first character I really started enjoying was Rashid. In terms of tiers and combos how good is he? He's the most fun I've had with a Street Fighter character in a long time. Any quick combos/basic maneuvers would be greatly appreciated if you guys know any.

If you had to pick a Capcom character to be a guest character in Street Fighter 5 who would you pick? Mine would be Linn Kurosawa.

Help against balrog

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:55 PM PDT

My friend who convinced me to play sfv plays balrog and has just been destroying me. Alot of it is because I'm new but as I've been practicing I'm starting to realize just how insane balrog is. Once he gets within mid screen range I feel like as soon as I hit a button hes gonna fly across the screen with a low or straight and once hes on top of me with any amount of meter I feel like I dont have any options. I know that it's pretty common for noobs to have trouble with him and I'm just wondering what's the best way to not tilt off the face of the earth when he gets going. I'm playing ed btw.

Any west coast people looking to help me from not losing all my hair?

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:21 PM PDT

This game is frustrating beyond all hell. Have played long enough to not plateau. I feel like I am getting worse and I dunno if it's the d pad or being on tilt but I want to up my game and its a slippery slope.

Just looking for a sparring partner where I can play relatively stress free, get feedback and give it too. I just want to improve and playing more in casual isnt helping.

Need feedback for a SFV matchmaking project

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:33 PM PDT

I follow a few Japanese players and noticed that they'll send out tweets like this (https://twitter.com/jyobin_channel/status/1024314964637437963) for open Battle Lounges. This SFV Bot (https://twitter.com/sfv_bot) account RTs these tweets if it includes the designated hashtag with the original tweets. Tweets all follow the same structure. Players list their ID, password, LP, and comment on what matchups they're looking to play or how long they'll be playing for. I think this is another convenient way to find lobbies other than trying to use Battle Lounge search or pinging groups in Discords. For a North American version of this, I would setup an account like SFV_Bot. I probably would keep the same structure but maybe add what region you're in.

What do you think of this idea? Think it has potential? Is there room for something like this to work? The success in it comes down to players using it, so I'm just trying to get opinions to see if there's a want for this. Thanks
