I got back on Halo 3 but i'm a bit rusty

Posted: 15 Aug 2018 06:35 PM PDT

I met my friend Sam 4 years ago on Xbox live while playing Halo, we’ve kept in touch all this time. He flew across from the Netherlands to the UK to see me for 5 days. Naturally, we spent some time in a gaming cafe playing halo. Thought it was a nice story to share-online friends are real friends.

Found this on the Halo Infinite trailer

Posted: 15 Aug 2018 11:08 PM PDT

I kept track of whenever I leveled up in Halo Reach. Ended up with a little over 200,000 MM kills by the time halo 4 was released.

Would anyone prefer a blur Halo movie over a live action one?

Posted: 15 Aug 2018 10:14 AM PDT

After seeing some of the live action halo series like forward unto dawn its hard not to notice that the quality of acting and visuals are just well, cheap looking. I would love to see a Halo movie made entirely by blur. That way acting isn't an issue at all and neither are visuals. Sure its CGI, but its incredibly life like and I think it would look better than any live action Halo movie, unless of course they were able to get great actors, a great director and a large budget to work with.

Will Halo Infinite feel like a soft reboot?

Posted: 15 Aug 2018 06:12 PM PDT

When the trailer for Halo Infinite released, people noted that it had a vibe very similar to Halo: Combat Evolved, with the focus being on the many different environments of the Halo ring. Frank O'Connor went on to say this about the game,

It will continue the story from Halo 5: Guardians but will be built in a way that makes it a good place to start your first halo adventure.

It will take place after the events of Halo 5 but feel new to new players. Remember how Halo CE woke you up in the middle of a war you had apparently been fighting?

So, Frankie's wording is interesting, comparing it to CE, saying that new players will be able to jump into the franchise with Infinite. It's the third installment in the Reclaimer Saga, however, the wording makes me feel as though it will be a soft reboot of sorts. Will feel a bit weird that the third installment in the Reclaimer Saga will be the game where newcomers can come onto the franchise. Do you think that Infinite will be somewhat of a soft reboot?

I'm playing Halo 2 for the first time. Here are my thoughts on Levels 11-13, and my final thoughts.

Previous Entries: Halo: 1-3 - 4-5 - 6-10 - Final Thoughts

Halo 2: 1-3 - 4-7 - 8-10

11. Uprising

I can feel the campaign winding down, and it's a shame. This has been quite the romp. We spawn in on a lovely green cliff edge, overlooking a lake. Ahead, a stormy metallic hanger filled with fellow Elites. I have to say, playing as the Arbiter always feels good - he feels less stocky compared to the Chief. Silver, gold, and violet glide through the hallways. Jackals and Brutes alike, we drop down and slash them to pieces. Cutting our way through the hanger, we reach an area guarded by turrets and Ghosts. It's at this time I learn about the Ghost Boost, and I'm kind of embarrassed I never tried the other buttons to see if they do anything for the vehicle beforehand.

The boost makes it so much fun! You can speed along straightaways, or try to lean with the turns when the roads curve, etc. I zip through the forest quietly as the river curves downhill. A Brute jumps aboard and throws me off, so I spin around and put a shotgun blast right into the engine. It's back to the firefights, and the Brute Shot has a huge bayonet! I wonder if that gives it higher melee damage, it's hard to tell. But I duck inside a chamber that turns out to be an armory, and deck myself out in a full explosive loadout - 4 plasma grenades, 12 Brute Shots, and 4 rockets! I storm through the encampment, just in time to see Tartarus leave.

12. High Charity

Back to the Chief, we find out the Prophet is leading the Covenant to Earth. Uh oh. We blew up a military's worth of Covenant forces in the last two games, but I'm guessing they have reserves.

Cortana stays behind. I'm not pleased. I fight my way into a building with Flood, Brutes, and Covenant. It's interesting seeing all the enemy groups get entangled - is there infighting, what weapons are they using, what distances are they keeping at, how aggressive are they. It's interesting stuff that shows how much care went into all of this.

One grav lift later, and we're in the dark. I pop on my flashlight, and don't see an energy meter this time. I guess Gunny at the beginning really did improve my optics. I fumble my way to a gorgeous light-bridge rotunda, but I'm not mad. It's actually pretty interesting fighting in the dark - you pay attention to silhouettes, flashes, colors, and lights. It's a way to re contextualize the same fights we've been seeing the whole game.

The Flood growths have spread to the walls, and still we have that same repeating architecture gripe... I sound like a broken record. Chief gets on board and has a touching moment with Cortana. I really hope we can come back for her. :(

13. The Great Journey

A BEACH ASSAULT, /r/halo! Just the way I goddamn like my Halo levels!

A Brute roars and climbs aboard my Wraith, so I slam on the gas and send him tumbling off the nearby cliff. Feels so good. I see Drones, I see Scarabs, I see Brutes and Brutes and Brutes, and nothing is going to stop me from moving forward. I notice the cells around me and free the fellow Covenant, and get ready to drive a Scarab... at least, until I see that Johnson's got to it before I did.

I jump into a Banshee and try to cover him, but honestly, he seems to be doing just fine. It looks like everything's just pecking at his ankles, mostly. He blasts the room open, and I deal with the last of Tartarus' guard. Now it's time for him.

But first, a cutscene. So the Forerunners created Guilty Spark, along with the Halos. We already know that the rings were part Flood laboratory, part Forerunner knowledge depot, and part last-ditch weapon. Now we know the rings were indeed fired (as the Monitor that Gravemind had hinted at), and they died. We know that the Covenant Prophets have made it their mission to activate the rings as their Great Journey. Things are all coming together. It's pretty sad to see the Arbiter and Tartarus confront the harsh truths. Great voice acting, too.

Tartarus puts up a rather lackluster fight. He can oneshot you, but he tends to move in slow bursts, get distracted by my fellow Elites, and stay on one level of the arena. Oh well. As he dies, I run up and try to pick up his hammer, but a cutscene starts up.

The Halo ring fires a burst of energy, and a beacon is activated. Hah, so we've got to get to the Ark of the Covenant. That's funny.

"Master Chief, do you mind telling me why you're on that ship?" "Sir, finishing this fight." Smash to credits. Man oh man, what a tease! You all must have been ripping your hair out when this first came out!

Credits roll, I finally get to hear the full electric guitar version of the Halo Theme. Out of respect, I stayed through the entire credits. "Special Thanks to everyone else who helped further our goal of World Domination and kicking ass!"

And see how my faith has been rewarded - an after credits scene. The Gravemind and Flood spurs corner Cortana. Looks like we've got to get her back next time. (Also, this was the scene where I realized Gravemind was the representation of the Flood collectively. My brain kind of defaulted to thinking he just a talking plant that didn't want to be killed when the ring went off. Kind of stupid of me.)

Final Thoughts

I'm not going to make a separate post for my epilogue for this one, because 1. I have fewer complaints, and 2. I already started Halo 3 and I can't wait to write that post. So I'm just going to say that Halo 2 was a wonderful experience. The Flood was far less annoying in the story, the combat continued to be balanced and challenging, the art was inspired and interesting, the graphical upgrade was significant, the new vehicles and weapons were a real joy, but the character work. Oh lord.

The story was art. The duality of the Chief and the Arbiter - their sense of responsibility amidst their societies, their sacrifices for their culture, the ones they care about, their gradual understanding of the world beyond what they knew, and their reluctance to face the harsher truths were delightful.

The Covenant was one of the best casts I've ever seen in a game. They were colorful, distinct, yet unified in a harsh sense. Their stories of religious control, of constrictive dogma, murky politics, the tradings of power and responsibility, their history with the Halo rings themselves, and all of their individual dealings with humanity, war, and the galaxy in general were masterful. I cannot emphasize enough how fun, but more importantly, interesting, I found this game's story, characters, and world.

This game was a treat, and it's immediately seated itself in my top favorite games list. Thank you for reading.

Halo CE Legendary Ending is the best ending of the series. Fact.

Does anyone else play through Halo CE just to see the best legendary ending the series has ever seen?

I know my hope is misplaced but I really wish it was on PC.
