Weekly /r/Games Discussion - Suggestion request free-for-all

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:09 PM PDT

/r/Games usually removes suggestion requests that are either too general (eg "Which PS3 games are the best?") or too specific/personal (eg "Should I buy Game A or Game B?"), so this thread is the place to post any suggestion requests like those, or any other ones that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about.

If you want to post requests like this during the rest of the week, please post to other subreddits like /r/gamingsuggestions, /r/ShouldIBuyThisGame, or /r/AskGames instead.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

[PC Review] Trying out Paladins after playing Overwatch for two years

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:09 AM PDT

Like most people, I assumed Paladins was a F2P Overwatch clone that was only worth playing if one couldn't afford Overwatch, so I never played it until recently. News of it coming to the Nintendo Switch and the recent Dev AMA got me thinking I should at least give it a try since it's free after all, but I figured I'd try it on PC since that's where I play first person shooters. Boy were my initial assumptions about the game wrong.

Key differences from Overwatch I noticed

The game is more like a League of Legends first person shooter than Overwatch. Here's what I mean by this:

  • You lock in a character at the start of the match and can't switch for the duration of the match (teams are size 5 instead of 6)

  • There are cards that act like League of Legend's Summoner Masteries that enhance different attributes of your character's base abilities. You also select a unique talent for the Champion that further modifies him or her. These are all chosen before a match starts.

  • There are Fighters, Flankers, Tanks and Supports. The maps don't have as many choke points as Overwatch, so Flankers can roam freely and there generally isn't as much of a "front line". Additionally, Supports aren't there only to heal -- they can do quite a bit of damage, but just happen to have a healing ability that usually has a cooldown, so it's necessary for other teammates to not rely on Supports as a battery.

The graphics initially turned me off because they aren't as stylized as Overwatch's, but I quickly got over it because I found that I didn't notice it much since the gameplay is good. I do think Overwatch still has better overall graphical cohesion (everything in Overwatch's world fits together), and graphical cues as to what's going on.

The sounds could use some work. Each Champion has ultimate abilities, but their announcement of them doesn't stand out as much as it does in Overwatch.
Overwatch's ultimate abilities have become iconic. If you hear "It's high noon", "Nerf this!", or "Ryujin no ken wo kurae!", you KNOW you need to drop whatever it is you're doing and eliminate or avoid that threat. On the other hand, a Champion in Paladins, Viktor, will just say "Barrage Incoming" in a subdued sort of voice. It was so subtle over the sound of gunshots and the blaring epic music that he wiped out four of my team standing on a capture point because none of us heard the announcement.

Character design is where you'll see a lot of overlaps with Overwatch, but Paladins finds a way to carve out a unique experience. Lian is essentially a female McCree without the flashbang or High Noon, Drogoz is a slightly different Pharah, and Khan has a shield like Reinhardt. There are a lot of similarities, but I don't think it's a bad thing. The similarities make the Champions easy to pick up and the subtle differences make them fun to learn. Plus the addition of the cards system tunes your Champion's attributes ever so slightly so maybe your Support can heal better in one match, or do more damage in another. The talent you select also further modifies the Champion. This all results in a more unique experience playing that Champion than you would get in Overwatch where Genji is Genji and Tracer is Tracer.

The gameplay is solid -- hits register and connect as you would expect in a modern FPS and the game plays smoothly (ahem PUBG). Payload maps are played slightly different from Overwatch. Both teams fight over the payload in the middle of the map, and whoever captures it pushes the payload.

Overall I've been having a blast playing -- so much that I decided to purchase the Champion Pack ($30 unlocks all current and future Champions) and the Battle Pass for the year (unlocks more content the more you play). I think anyone who loves Hero Shooters owes it to himself/herself to give Paladins a try, since it's free after all! It's a nice change after seeing the same heroes in Overwatch for two years. You'll know in an hour or two if it's something you like.

tl, dr: I've been having a lot of fun. Try the free game and see for yourself if it's something you like
