Playing the game by not playing the game Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:50 PM PDT Spent an embarrassing amount of time today learning just enough about Power shell (That I had not hear of before) and scripting (had hear off vaguely) to modify someone else's script, to automate my UPS testing so that I don't have to sit at my computer noting down Factorio benchmark results. All so my computer can run factorio for hours on it's own and let me know how my different builds compare. I spent most of my day "at" factorio but I only got in 20 minutes actually in Factorio. It doesn't make any sense this is not how computer games are supposed work. [link] [comments]
I had a goal to launch 1,000,000 rockets. I did not achieve that goal. (Some useless musings) Posted: 02 Aug 2018 10:38 AM PDT But to be clear, it's actually not very difficult using Bob's mods. Though I'm pretty much done with my Bob's rail grid playthrough, this may be the first time I felt completely in control of the build from start to finish, since building a rail grid with LTN is basically the large-scale version of plopping down an innumerable amount of requester and provider chests. Relatively little thought is needed once you make a working blueprint book. The end game however, quickly devolves into ripping up old blocks and replacing them with a fraction of the assemblers, accompanied by a clusterfuck of beacons, which really ruins the fun for me. However, it comes down to either that, or trying to play with single-digit FPS. That's why I lost interest in the map after 1,000 or so rockets. I found myself destroying thoughtful designs such as this in order to condense it into a tiny mess where-in one building produces 10X more than 60 assemblers did previously, thanks to some massively overpowered modules. Old science.... new science. So yes I think it's indeed very possible to launch a million rockets alone. I got to 6 rockets per minute average without much work... and with some more beaconing single assemblers it could easily become 10, 20, 50 per minute and then just walk away and let it run overnight. It just kind of stopped being fun at some point. With this build I had anticipated that my biggest throughput issue would eventually be trains. I was right, but not for the reason I suspected. A two-rail system was way more than I needed to support an LTN network of Bob's Mk3 trains with Mk3 wagons (keep in mind that stack sizes are increased in his mods). Rarely did I ever even see a hint of congestion. No the biggest bottleneck was actually loading and unloading the damn things. If I were to do it again I would drop the loaders when moving from inventory to inventory and just use stack inserters which, after some infinite research, could load a wagon easily 5X faster. All in all it's an easy way to build. I only used bots in the mall and for fueling trains and it was a nice change of pace from the nonstop swarm that accrues when they're your main method of moving stuff around. The end. Posted: 02 Aug 2018 05:38 PM PDT I'm sure I'm not the only one to feel this way. The atomic bombs for the rocket launcher don't feel like the weapons of mass destruction they are irl. They just feel like the rocket got an upgrade, bigger radius and more damage. IMO, nukes should require a silo like the rocket, require more parts to build, be more devastating, and include an air raid siren. [link] [comments]

Research Center Design - with Train Cars Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:40 AM PDT I thought this up a while ago and now have been using it in my base for a bit successfully. The idea is to use Train Cars as Buffer chests for Science so when you do have slow periods in your research, you bank the science packs. Its easy enough that you can start the design with only Red and Green Science and only yellow belts, and then add Blue and Grey Science when you get Red Belts, and then eventually add the rest with Blue Belts. It also leaves room for rows of Beacons down the road when you are ready to add them. !Blueprint https://pastebin.com/s00s4MuN Research Center: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/334735604342325249/474602427643854848/blueprint.png Contents of the Train Car: https://i.imgur.com/QZdMIE4.png Note that since I didn't build this till I was already launching rockets in this base, the Filter inserters don't perfectly match what I wrote above. But its a quick enough fix to make it so Red And Green pull from the Yellow line, and Blue/Grey pull from the Red Line, etc. I also have this sitting on top of my science production area, so the 4 belts incoming being spread out is because that's where my science pack production comes out. Bootstrap bases are a necessary evil that I quite enjoy. Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:05 PM PDT We are doing a City Block base. Our initial starter base includes everything required to get Logistics robots, small science builds, small refinery, small smelters, all the bits and pieces for a Mall, which makes the bits and pieces for your characters to be able to go out and Go Large. However, it's an almighty abortion of a thing, belts weaving everywhere, as we shoehorn in various 'oh, we need this' which isn't built in the mall. We're using Katherine of Sky's Mall, which makes a plethora of items. With the BigBags mod, probably too much stuff, since it takes many hours of total resource consumption to craft the requisite number of -stacks- of things, each stack 10 times larger than the 'normal' stack, so ten times as many resources. The final and most important requirement to get a robot based city block going, is robots. They require flying robot frames, and purple/yellow science to unlock the Logistics. The tiny yellow science producer GOBBLES our iron, and thirsts for Blue Processors, which are pitifully produced by ones and twos in a fabricobbled factory. Overall, it is a disgusting mess, completely devoid of any organised 'bus' meta; But hell, it was fun to make. Breaking all the 'learned rules' about making a decent bus for products, and just flinging stuff around to fit inside a city block (even the starter base is inside a city block). Once we have enough bots, we can tear the cobbled-together bits down (leaving the Mall, because it's important to have stuff you need for your character), whilst switching to purpose-built city blocks that do our science, research, green and red circuits, blue processors, and modules. Today I put together the confabulation that creates logistics and construction bots. It is quite -yeesh-. Here is a pic: Fabricobbled Bots [link] [comments]

How do you balance usage in BobAngel? Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:30 PM PDT For most resources it's quite easy for me. Stuff like mineralized/saline water and hydrogen commonly get clarified or stack flared out of existence to keep the chains running smoothly. However, other stuff like copper, lead, and geodes just builds up nonstop. I am producing slightly more copper than iron, but I am using iron at like 6x the rate of copper. I now have warehouses full of the stuff scattered throughout my base. [link] [comments]

upgrading my t430 for factorio? Need help Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:52 PM PDT Hello all, im wanting to upgrade my t430 for factorio and after reading this article, https://medium.com/@n4ru/the-definitive-t430-modding-guide-3dff3f6a8e2e I was thinking of buying the Intel Core i7-3540M https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-3540M+%40+3.00GHz&id=1857 it looks like its the fastest single core that will be compatible in my laptop. Currently i have Intel Core i5-3320M - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-3320M+%40+2.60GHzi feel it is a decent difference but not sure if its going to be worth it The retail price for the I7 3540 is like 400 something, but ive found it used on ebay :/ for as low as 44 plus shipping.. Also i have 8gb of 1600mhz ram, I was considering going to 2133 here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UVOVV12/ref=twister_B01N2VAT6F?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 again, noticeable difference? for the 50-70 for the CPU and 90 for the ram, about $150, how big of an effect do you think I will get here? Is it worth it would you say? im on a budget and although I could build a factorio dedicated computer for pretty cheap, something like this (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pfTwcY) I really cant afford right now to do that, although if i sold the laptop, and added in the 150 i would have spent, maybe that would be the better option? also any advice on if I decided to sell my laptop, or if i upgraded the CPU and Ram, to sell that and get something back for that to help towards the upgrade? Or does anyone have a different route I should take? Thanks so much!! [link] [comments]
Is there a mod to spawn ore in water? Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:34 AM PDT Here, https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/93u6bs/still_searching_for_iron_on_my_water_world/e3golnq/, /u/Rebecca-x made a comment about resources spawning in water. My google searches didn't find anything to let normal ore spawn in water, but did find where RSO spawned it on accident as a bug.
What if I wanted ore to spawn in water and then be forced to landfill to get to it? Is there a mod that does that? [link] [comments]

can i get some help with suggestions of what things i should focus on? Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:33 PM PDT first id like to say, this is byfar my favorite internet community. everybody is so helpful. after playing on .13 and taking a break, ive decided to get .16 and actually start playing the game again, and this time im addicted. so i have a question: what are some steps i should take in completing the game? no, i dont want a step by step guide, just some basic things i should start on/move forward to. any suggestions are appreciated :p also, here is what i have so far. Runnability on low end laptop? Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:44 AM PDT So I am thinking of getting Factorio but I play on a fairly low end laptop. It's not the worse but it ain't no super computer. I was thinking of if my computer could but why wonder when I could ask people who do play it. I love games with automation like Factorio. I really enjoyed Sky Factory for Minecraft. So would it be possible? I play games like CSGO, Skyrim, Starcraft II, Civ 5 and even Battlefield Bad Company 2. So might I be able too? My laptop is just a stock ACER laptop. Nothing special at all.
