Dota 2 - Thread for those moving/new to Dota.

Thread for those moving/new to Dota.

Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:57 AM PDT

Many players lately seem to want to get into Dota, and the in-game tutorial system is a bit lacking, so I made this thread to provide good resources for learning Dota. Feel free to post questions or advice in the comments.

Good resources for those moving to Dota:

Also some various Twitch streamers are good to watch to learn techniques:

Most of these streamers are willing to answer any questions you ask them, if those questions are reasonable.

There is also an in-game "watch" tab to watch the perspective of players.

For new players, I'd recommend only playing against bots until you're mostly comfortable with the mechanics of the game, it provides a better learning environment and will save you from being flamed online.

It is true that Dota has a bit of a steep learning curve, but stick with it and you will learn that it is the best game, or one of the best games, out there.

Again, feel free to post questions or more resources in the comments.

Edit 1: added some things to the text to make it easier to read.

Edit 2: Thanks for the pin!

Hero Diversity at TI8

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:56 AM PDT

Greetings folks,

I'm a DOTA2 fan and player since 2015. We all know TI8 was amazing in almost every regard, but I think it's fair to say that drafts felt like Deja Vu too often. This got me curious about what the actual statistics, in comparison to past TI's1, would look like. Unfortunately I'm by no means statistician, but curiosity is a great motivator, so I took a crack at it anyway.

-----

To begin with, let's establish what we'd consider "ideal".

In an ideal world, each hero would be contested (picked or banned) a little less than once every five games, or about 19% of the time. Of course in DOTA, sometimes we have huge changes, new items, reworked items, overpowered heroes, under-powered heroes, niche picks, pocket strategies, plenty of factors that makes some picks popular, and others less popular. Even with that being the case:

  • It's nice to hear that all but 4, 5 or 6 heroes out of 110+ were picked, but that isn't a very helpful analysis.
  • We would hope the Median hero in any given meta would fall roughly around a 19% contest rate.
  • We would hope that the popular heroes wouldn't be TOO popular.
  • We would hope that the unpopular heroes wouldn't be TOO unpopular.

To make such a comparison I used a Box & Whisker plot2.

https://i.redd.it/iikfqa0pg9j11.png

BOX PLOT TAKEAWAYS:

  1. Every TI has several outliers (points outside of the plot).
    1. TI8 was the first time since TI5 we had any hero (let alone multiple) contested greater than 90% of the time.
    2. TI3 and TI5 metas were particularly guilty of having many severe outliers.
    3. Half of TI7's outliers are there simply by virtue of the core of the hero pool's being tightly clustered, unlike almost every other year.
  2. The median of TI8 was 9%, TI7 leads the pack with 13%, and TI5 is the lowest, at 5%.
  3. Every year (with the exception of TI7) skews extremely heavily towards the top.
  4. A recurring weakness across most years is the bottom quartile of the hero pool. The bottom 25% of heroes at TI8 were contested 2% at most.
    1. Going back to our ideal contest rate of 19%, that's almost 10x worse than we'd hope.

-----

Next I adapted the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (frequently used in ecological studies) to find the 'Effective % of hero pool' and 'Effective number of heroes' present at each TI. Just to give us some sort of external frame of reference (and appease the bit of /r/dotamasterrace in us all), I included League of Legends World Championship 2017's numbers.

First I graphed the Effective % of Heroes along with the Effective # of Heroes side by side, giving more priority to %. Obviously the # of heroes is affected by the number of heroes available in Captain's Mode.

Take note of the reference line near the top3. This is an EXTREMELY rough representation of Effective Hero % representation across all-metas in professional play. I was impressed to see it was as high as it is though.

https://i.redd.it/u6rtjssqg9j11.png

I compared the % of Heroes from each preceding year to the % of Heroes at TI8. Clearly, TI7 is outstanding, sitting well above every year so far. TI8 is roughly middle of the road by this factor.

https://i.redd.it/8zsjg8bsg9j11.png

As mentioned before, # of Heroes is affected by how many heroes are in the game to begin with. That being the case, it's reasonable to assume the game becomes a bit more difficult to balance fairly, so I thought I'd do another comparison of every preceding year to TI8. TI8 performs a more favorably here, coming in well above TI3 and TI5, beating TI4 and barely behind TI6.

------

CONSIDERATIONS:

  • This is purely an analysis of diversity. As evidenced by the amazing games on the main stage, diversity is but a single factor in the quality of games played.
  • This is also NOT any analysis of hero winrates.
    • It is worth noting how a number of unconventional picks came out as the tournament boiled down to the top several teams. Sometimes these totally failed, but we saw a number of wins off the back of these picks too.
  • Patch 7.19 deployed only a mere 2 weeks before TI8 group stages.
    • Previous years had at least a week+ of additional time to adapt.
      • I think it can also be said, previous years final patches were rough tweaks to a more well-established meta.
  • As stated at the start, I'm not a statistician. I realize there's a good chance I'm going to post this, and some horrible flaw with my methods will be found.
  • My method is weighting picks and bans equally. If people were interested, it might be worth looking at how all of this changes if we looked exclusively at picks.
  • This method weights picks from Game 1 of Day 1 of the group stage just as heavily as picks from a game of the Grand Finals.
    • I considered trying to come up with a weighted measure, but decided against it, at least for now.

CONCLUSION:

TI8 doesn't seem to have been the best, or the worst meta for diversity. It sits somewhere towards the middle of the pack, largely affected by nearly untouched heroes as well as a few severely over-contested heroes.

I charted this data in a number of other ways, but found myself getting a bit overwhelmed and decided to strip back to just this. Also, I'm really hoping by graphics show up properly as I uploaded them directly to Reddit.

If anyone has any questions or alternative ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks for reading!

NOTES:

[1] I excluded TI1 and TI2 simply because readily available draft data was harder to come by. My original intent was to compare TI8 to TI7, but I ended up doing a bit more than that, as you can see.

[2] I exclusively used draft data from Group stage and Main stage at each TI. Not qualifiers.

[3] All-time DOTA2 hero representation is taken from a Shannon-Wiener index of all "Premium" and "Professional" event matches, with accounting for hero's availability in Captain's mode.

V1lat on his Telegram "Both coaches of VGJ.S can't disturb their responsibilities"

V1lat gives some insides about VGJ.S in TI8. Main article here. VGJ.S didn't have coach in their booth because of an argument between Illidan and Clairvoyance. One of them asked another one to withdraw from preparation before first play-off game because "Today i will prepare team by myself". V1lat didn't mention who it was. Coaches couldn't resolve a problem with each other that is why tea, decided to have Jack in the booth. If one of coaches went to the booth another one would be tilted and couldn't help team in next games. Also he didn't no if it was a reason for hiring Aui_2000 instead of Clairvoyance, because Illidan don't want to be all-time coach, but he sure that this situation had an influence for this decision.
