Meanwhile at Valve HQ...

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:43 AM PDT

Random Valve employee out of breath...: "Mr. Newell /r/Dota2 has caught on. They're demanding transparency for the Immortal 3 odds!"

Gaben: (Looks to IceFrog) "The time has come..."

IceFrog: (Nods)

Gaben: (Looking to random employee) "Do it. Now."

Employee: Sir, are you sure? We've held on to this for so lo...

Gaben: "NOW!"

Employee: "Yes sir..." (Walks out of the office, looking down. raises hand and hesitates before slamming it onto big red button)

At that very moment on Twitter... "Artifact release date has been announced!!!!!"

This is the ideal treasure rewards for level 723. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

Retroactive immortal 3 is complete garbage - tin foil theory

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:44 AM PDT

How do you make the same mistake two years in a row? How likely is it that our developers have intentionally forgone the "escalating odds" things to try boost sales or stir controversy?

Retroactively gifting me the prize is a crock of shit, because I've already overpaid you. That's like if Samsung collected their exploding note 7's but didn't refund you. That's like buying instant scratch lottery tickets that have 0 prizes because the printer was faulty, then not being refunded. We should be compensated for any extra money that we would not have wanted to spend otherwise. We don't want to open more treasures than needed to get the final "ultra rare" we are after. What am I going to do with all the extra regular immortals that are essentially illiquid garbage assets in my steam inventory?

(TL;DR) Super tin foil theory coming up:

I think we have a case here, where it might be financially beneficial for Valve to mess up the escalating odds for the final treasure for the biggest event of the year. This sub can meme and suck Gaben's dick as much as they want but business is businsess. What if I told you, you could conveniently "forget" escalating odds to manipulate your player base into buying extra treasures because a certain demographic of humans have a personality prone to addiction? Don't worry they won't find out immediately so they'll splurge on us for sure. Sure, they'll find out eventually and sales will slow, but just promising retroactive activation will take care of anyone who has noticed or even cares in the first place. Let's also use a hero with a highly demanded arcana (QOP) and make it a bonus reward for treasure 3. Now, we wait 24 hours and "hotfix" the issue and send out a wave of bonus prizes so that all the suckers forget they overpaid by $x. This way, we also control the supply of "ultra rares" while maintaining the illusion that it is dependent on how many are opened by our players, because in reality the drop rate was never calculated, the drop rate is pegged to the number of immortal 3's that are sold in the first 24 hours. Can you imagine if someone bought 100 treasures and the drop rate gave them FOUR BONUS REWARDS? No, we are using the same principle as stepped pricing, the salesman's wet dream. If this sucker is willing to buy 100 treasures for an ultra rare, we should reward him as much as the guy who bought 75 treasures to maximise our profit. Anyway, we should also make the original immortals "super duper awesome exalted" quality to invoke a feeling of exclusivity.

To contradict myself though, a quick look at the prize pool graph of previous years does not indicate that TI7's Immortal 3 had affected the prize pool as much as previous years, so on the surface it doesn't seem repeating like the same mistake last year on purpose would be helpful. Obviously the graph itself isn't enough to make any conclusions, the circumstances surrounding the situation are just a bit suspicious.

In conclusion, anyone who paid for multiple treasure 3's should be fairly compensated for all the extra cash they spent. I don't have a hard solution but this all feels really wrong and unethical. I'm exaggerating in my tin foil theory but it's to make the point that Valve stands to gain a lot from this "mistake". Retroactively opening treasures is the same as retroactively getting paid by a poker machine. They get to choose whatever drop-rate maximizes their profits and the consumer is squeezed out of their money. It doesn't make any fucking sense. It doesn't affect us all, but it will affect a certain type of addictive personality really badly. It also fits the narrative that 2018 Valve is not like the classic Valve we all choose to remember. Sometimes, we forget we live in a capitalist society. Thoughts?

The International 2018 - Immortal Treasure III

The WD ultra rare is the kind of item that the Eminent Revival should have had

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:47 PM PDT

"As a special gift to Battle Pass owners who crest level 615, we'll be granting an exclusive 'Promise of Eminent Revival' Legacy Bundle later this summer filled with new takes on five select items from previous Battle Pass Immortal treasures..."

Just retroactively gifting a ultra rare won't sovle the problem.

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:21 AM PDT

Especially with the same problem last year, people expect them to not repeat it again. If it is the first time people would've let it go, but now this looks like marketing strategy rather than a mistake. This just takes fun out of the battle pass and opening treasures in general. I am at level 1256 and opened all my treasure 3s, I got qop rare at treasure 48th. Compared this 4 golden riki, 4 lich, one pa from immortal 1, And 3 wk sword, 3 golden ds, 2 golden jugg and one od from immortal 3, Just giving a ultra rare and one or 2 rare won't make Justice for people who spent their money on the battle pass to level up to get more treasure. What valve did is a dick move to bait people into buying more levels, what they should've done is give people quality product on which people are willing to spend money on and have fun with it. I love dota2, but if I am jebaited like this every year and spend too much money on their technical problem for which they had a year to work on, then I might as well quit playing dota2 for my own good and just stick to watching tournaments. Thank you valve for this and A big FU from me.

By far, the most advanced scam I have ever encountered

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:51 PM PDT

Am I the only one who thinks its not a coincidence the odds are broken?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:37 AM PDT

This might sound far fetched, but I believe that the odds on treasure III being broken is not a mistake, but is on purpose. Here is why:

First off, this has happened a couple of times before, each benifiting valve. First being last years immortal III, making it so people bought more levels because the odds to get the sword were very low. It happened again with this collectors cache, having enigma be untradeable and unmarketable for almost a week until it was fixed, making people buy more treasures to get the ultra rare. And now with this treasure. I sense a pattern.

Now some of you may say mistakes happen, and its true, but why do mistakes that hsrm valve get fixed within minutes? Take for example last years trove carafe, the first immortals were tradeable and marketable, but a mere hour later it was fixed, and thats not the only time, eveey time a mistske like that happens its fixed within minutes.

I might be wrong, but I believe these are no mistakes, but small stuff valve do on purpose to get more money.

Good Morning Valve! A sweet message to start your day.

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:23 AM PDT

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money left... but what I do have is a level 1689 battle pass. Levels I have acquired over a very long savings. Levels that make me a salary for people like you. If you get me my Odds back now, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will beg you.

Valve, you can't expect the prize pool to rise every year without actually making an effort. Where does your greed end?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:37 AM PDT

Warning: Long thread and trash English

The immortal treasure 3 today was absolutely horrendous. The escalating odds doesn't work, some people didn't even get one with lvl 3000 battle pass.

LVL 3000, that is at least $1000 for some cosmetic items. Hmm, I wonder if the 'bug' with the odds was actually a bug, or something planned in hope of whales buying more levels off the rush from opening lootboxes? Also worth mentioning is that there is a bug that you can't put WD's extra rare on market, but Batrider's. I don't need to explain why this 'bug' exist.

I know a lot of yall would argue that this is a f2p game, arguing about cosmetic items is stupid because they don't improve your character or your skills in anyway. But the truth is this is what has been keeping Dota 2 alive. It's people's obsession for hero's looks, because it gives the feeling of playing an RPG outside of the actual matchups by making your hero look better. If people didn't actually cared about this, there wouldn't be so many threads about waiting for immortal treasures to come out.

I don't wanna comment on whether the immortals this year were good or average or bad because everybody have their own taste. But the odds for getting rares/extra rares this year was probably the lowest since the first battle pass. Previous years you were expected to get everything by lvl 1000, this year some people still doesn't have PA or OD by lvl 2000, or even 3000. That is like $800 or $1200 thrown into a video game, needless to say this is ridiculous. This is also partly due to how spread out everything is in this year's battle pass. Also the item effects, in my opinion, are very low effort and very shitty looking(the green shiva, radiance and maelstrom ... yuck). In short, throwing money into this thing doesn't feel nearly as satisfying as previous years.

Now why is this happening? Obvious reason is more money. Dota 2 has a very unique player base. This is one of the hardest games on the market right now, most people playing this started when they were very little, back when Dota 1 was the hot shit. That player base has grown up 10 years later and most of them are adults now, they have their jobs, some got married, some even have kids now. They don't have nearly as much time as when they were teenagers, a lot of my friends they watch TI, they buy battle pass, but they rarely play because life gets in the way. That is why the dota 2 player base has been declining and what's worse is that there's no new blood that keeps going in. As I've mentioned before, dota 2 is one of the hardest game on the market right now, I can probably say this is THE hardest game on the market. It's as bad as it is that new players need to learn this incredibly complicated, great piece of art from scratch, they also need to face the annoying smurfs every three matches, and the game itself doesn't make it better. You lose all exp if creeps get denied, you lose a shit ton of gold when you're killed. New players are going to feel like they're worse than a neutral camp when smurfs take over the game, and most of them will quit and find something else to play.

And there you have it, the vicious cycle. Less people playing dota makes it harder for the TI prize pool to grow, and Valve needs to pull greedy shit like this to squeeze every single dime they can get out of all the remaining players that still believes in this game that accompanied them throughout their youth. And I fear doing so will also drive away those players. Because everything has a limit, honestly, valve, you need to understand what will be that last straw.

We need more content, we need to see some devotion. Make the game easier for new players, make more heroes so the game actually feels fresh to play again. Make bold changes, make your player base believe in you again.

Release that sweet, sweet immortal treasure 4. My body is ready. HandsUp

Last year Immortal Treasure III was bugged not giving people Rare/Very Rare/Ultra Rare items, is this year the same again?

Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:41 PM PDT

Opened 30 and literally got nothing at all

EDIT: with the dismantle i got 4 more tries and also got nothing

EDIT2: for those who got lucky enough know that most of us that are having this kind of trouble started opening as fast as they could, or in other words, when the update happened

EDIT3: just for futures references, this thread is not refered to ultra rares, but normal rares mostly: no qop no points literally no anything after 36 opens, would like to know a public state from valve about the situation.

Can we not have a prizepool on the Allstar match?

Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:56 AM PDT

Allstar matches have always been known to be a group of favourite pro players (and occasionally fans) having fun picking random weird heroes mainly for entertainment, last year's 100k prizepool made it boring to watch since people were trying a little hard to win which completely defeats the purpose..
