Why the Brawl characters returning in Smash Ultimate means so much to me

Posted: 06 Jul 2018 10:32 AM PDT

When I was a kid, around elementary school or middle school, my family decided to make a big move to another state to live with some family, particularly my grandpa and grandma. I lost all of my friends, and due to some social anxiety and general awkwardness, I didn't make many friends out-of-state. What I did have, however, was Super Smash Bro's Brawl.

The Wii was my first real console (due to my mother's protective nature and anti-videogame outlook), and all of my old friends used to talk about Melee all the time, so Brawl was the first game that I picked up. I lost myself in the game: unlocking all of the characters through the subspace emissary, smashing records in homerun bat and break the targets (To this day, I will stand by the fact that Brawl had the best single-player content). But when I had become bored with subspace and couldn't cheese the sandman anymore, I would ask my grandfather to play with me.

My grandpa is the best man I've ever known- he built his success from the ground up, and despite the many serious business interactions he's been a part of, he always made time for family, and was so focused on fun. He grew up before videogames really became a "thing," (or at least never seemed interested in them), so him playing with me was always such a big deal.

That's how I got through those few years out-of-state (we later moved back to our old home after the move out-of-state didn't work out). Me and my grandfather, playing upstairs, ignoring the problems and loneliness surrounding me.

Unfortunately, you can't ignore the passing of time. My grandfather has had many health complications as he grows older, culminating in many trips to the hospital: the first happening just two days before Nintendo revealed the brawl characters (along with every other character) returning in Smash Ultimate at E3. Obviously, it just means so much to me to see these characters returning at a time like this. As for my grandfather, he is still hospitalized, and is having a large surgery. I can't help but think about how Smash had impacted our relationship, and how lucky I am.

Just something I wanted to share with this amazing community- about how something as simple as Smash has impacted my life.

Edit: can't thank everybody enough for their kind words and well-wishes. this community is seriously the bomb

Don't know if there's any footage out there that could help determine this, but I thought it'd be a neat touch.

Stage Vetoes, an efficient means to handle the vastly expanded stagelist

Posted: 06 Jul 2018 12:09 PM PDT

Intro

This is an exciting time to be a Smash Bros fan. Ultimate promises to completely overhaul almost everything that's always endeared us to the series, pushing the good things to be amazing and bad things to be a little less likely to drain your soul from your body. With the game changing so radically, our rulesets are going to have to similarly evolve to keep up.

The biggest point of contention I've seen so far would certainly be the issue of the stagelist. Because, oh my god, it is a thing of wonder. Gone are the days of stagelists you could count on one hand, and that's before we even consider the number of stages we could call CPs with the addition of the new Stage Hazard toggle. We are almost certainly going to be able to put together stagelists with upwards of 20 legal stages without breaking a sweat, easily dwarfing even the most liberal of stagelists we've seen in any other mainline iteration of smash.

Striking is Dead

And a bigass stagelist killed it.

At its core, Stage Striking is about whittling down several stages until there is just one left, which would then be the stage used for that game. It doesn't take much foresight to see the issues when you apply such a system to stagelist of this size, unless you really want to hear someone say 'ok uhhhh so, as my 8th strike, I guess I ban…' It just doesn't work, from a gameplay or a practical TO'ing perspective.

Enter, Stage Vetoes.

Here's how it works. The player who lost the previous game proposes any stage from the stagelist that they have not won on already. The opponent has 3 Vetoes to use, which simply remove that suggested stage from the pool of valid stages for the next game (much like a Strike would have). This process repeats until the opponent either agrees to a suggested stage, or runs out of Vetoes (at which time the player who lost can choose any remaining legal stage).

This new system has several massive advantages over other proposed systems thus far. I believe that keeping as large a stagelist as possible for Ultimate is going to give us the best Smash experience possible, and this allows for as many stages as we want. There is no upper limit. Even if the stagelist were to swell to preposterous sizes like 50 stages, it can easily be adapted by allowing for a 4th or maybe even 5th Veto.

Not only that, but this actively rewards players who seek out stages that have special benefits for their specific characters. Maybe the platform layout on Kongo Jungle allows your character to chain your uairs all the way to the blastzone for a free KO, or something to that effect. That doesn't mean we as a community need to ban that stage, that just means it's on the players to learn these subtleties and prepare for them accordingly for tournaments. Character communities will work together to figure out what they can abuse about stages that might otherwise be seen as undesirable at first glance. The more people explore the space, the more mileage we're going to see from all the stages.

In the same stroke as how maining a low tier can give you an edge over someone who doesn't know that MU, you can get an advantage over an opponent by taking them to a stage that they just aren't as familiar with. And that's great! That's their fault for not exploring the options available to them, and (if they're smart) will show them some new tactics that they can go home and explore themselves. This rewards knowledge of ALL stages, while not being so punishing as to require mastery of all of them. At the end of the day, we're not talking about outlandish stages. We're talking about varied platform layouts and sizes. The game will still be about who can outplay the other.

Mindgames

This system opens up a whole new world of mindgames before the game ever says 'Go!'. Before you even get to a tournament, you'll have labbed not only your best character options, but your best stages. Much like how we see 'Mario mains' now, we would start seeing 'Mario Mains who focus on Triplats' or 'Mario Mains who've specialized in unconventional stages'. You don't just bring characters, you bring stages too. Knowing what stages your opponent excels on is going to give the Veto system more and more depth with each set you play against not just characters, but individual players and their preferences as well.

But that's before you even actually get to where you'd start Vetoing. Once you're actually there, there's even more to consider. Do you pitch your best stage immediately, or something less desirable? Do you try to pitch 3 stages that are not your favorite in the hopes that your opponent Vetoes them all and allows you to go to your number 1 pick? Your opponent might waste a Veto on a stage you never actually wanted to fight on, but you also run the risk of putting yourself onto a less optimal selection if they correctly guess that you're shooting to stall out all their Vetoes.

Even with all this going on, remember that at MOST this can only take 3 exchanges before the stage is selected. If, through testing, we were to find that to be too long still, we can easily drop the 3 Veto system to a 2, or possibly even a 1.

Potential Issues

-Does not work for game 1. Game 1 would still be best played using a traditional, relatively small stagelist of neutral stages. The Veto system does not work while both players are on equal footing, it requires the players to be in clear advantage and disadvantage states.

-Duplicate stages. Much like what we saw with Dreamland/BF in Smash 4, we are going to see a lot of stages that, outside of some minor changes, are pretty much the same stage. Same as in Smash 4, I suggest that a Veto of one of these stages be applied to all similar stages to prevent the necessity of multiple Vetoes on very similar stages.

-It's hard to remember. Some of you might disagree with this, but I can't tell you how many times I've had to ask 'Hey, uh, what stage did we just play game 1 on again?'. It certainly has a bit more to hold onto than the old Striking system, but I'm confident that it will be just as natural feeling after just a little practice.

-It over complicates the game. Not everyone wants a massive stagelist, some people want consistency. If this is the case, then I can definitely see this not being at all something you'd be excited about. Not really a way to hit a good middle ground for this point, but it definitely merits discussion.

-This system means that the losing player can guaranteed get, at worst, their 4th most wanted stage. When you're looking at such a massive list of stage, that's a VERY favorable result for them especially when there's such a push right now for a system based on random selection. I would argue that getting a stage that benefits you is the whole point of a counterpick stage though. Game 2 has always been designed to favor the loser by allowing them not only stage pick but also getting second pick on character, which is very much in line with the ideology this Veto System is based off of.

Closing

If nothing else, I think we can all agree that the old Stage Striking system just is not going to work with Ultimate. I don't want to see rotations of stages, or arbitrary decisions of which ones should or should not be legal. I want Smash Bros the way it always could have been if Sakurai hadn't given us such goofy ass stages that ended up being more of a struggle than the player you were up against.

We are on the cusp of a brand new era of Smash. I want it to be the best it can possibly be, and to me, that means we legalize every stage we possibly can.

One last thing, I ask that you remember that this is just a proposal. We don't know what's going to be in the final version, it's very possible that literally none of this ends up being relevant at all. My ultimate (no pun intended) goal here is to open the door for fresh ideas in regards to rulesets, so please voice any concerns or suggestions! Even if this isn't the direction we go in, that's how we're going to find the best way for everyone.

The top 30 most commonly "leaked" characters for SSBU

Posted: 06 Jul 2018 03:54 PM PDT

I just saw someone post this spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AgeylUWp967Qz6g7mObIOn-mmCl2LBNg-3ssgZG2NY8/edit#gid=1379058582

It's really cool to see a group of people document all of the "leaks" that are going on.

I took the top 30 most "leaked" characters and put it in a graph for people to visualize.

Click here for Top 30 Most "Leaked" Characters

Takeaways:

There actually isn't a lot of spread. People copy cat or happen to all leak the same characters...HA.

Honestly though, I would not be surprised though if the remaining number of newcomers does end up coming from this top 30 list, with the exception of an oddball. Sakurai seems to want to please consumers this game, most of these "leaked" characters are highly requested characters.

But the reason why this is most likely 99.9% full of false leaks, Captain Toad was #100 something. That boy is a shoe-in.

Anyways, enjoy the visual. Credit to those documenting the leaks.

Who did not make this top 30 that you think actually has a shot?

Although it will likely turn out to just be Daisy Blossom, it would be so great if her Final Smash was a copy of Night Slash or Triforce Slash. Or imagine Great Ether with Daisy wielding a tennis racket. That'd be hilarious.
