How to Vote

There are a total of 5 general tiers; S Tier, A Tier (divided into A+, A, and A- tier), B Tier (divided into B+, B, and B- tier), C Tier (divided into C+, C, and C- tier), and D Tier. Based on the description of each tier in the poll, you will vote where you think each character belongs, with S Tiers being the best and D Tiers being the worst. Using my magical, mythical, and totally ballin' powers (aka basic math), I will transmogrify all of the polls together to come up with the month's tier list!

NOTABLE TOURNAMENT PLACINGS

Until further notice, any method of grading notable tournament performances has been scrapped. The methodology I used for the latter half of 2017 was heavily flawed and ultimately didn't break many ties, as there was usually a clear-cut best performance. For now, comment in a respective character's section below with tournament results if you think any important performances were missed here.

Friendly reminder that NOBODY really knows which characters and strategies are good or bad in Ultimate regardless of all that we are hearing from top players. Remember when the community collectively knew FOR A FACT that Bayonetta was a dead character after the nerf? LOL

Interesting Smash Ultimate Info

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 12:11 PM PDT

I haven't seen anyone else talk about this, so I'm going to say it here. I played Smash Ultimate at E3 this year and found something cool. At the end of a match before the winning screen, each controller vibrates a specific number of times for what place you get in the match. The first place controller vibrates three times, second place vibrates twice, third place vibrates once, and last place doesnt vibrate at all.

I spent this evening drawing up an Alolan Exeggutor move set for Ultimate - The Pokemon fighter you didn't know you didn't want

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 05:42 PM PDT

Is it just me, or is the wait for this Smash way more painful than the previous games?

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 10:24 AM PDT

My hype level is over 9000, and it has been stuck there for 3 weeks. I've talked about Smash so much that my sweet and loving wife pretty much put a ban on me talking about it with her (which I break about 5 times a day). I've watched the "Everyone is Here" trailer probably 20 times and every possible prediction video in existence.

I think this Smash has finally broken me.

When I got thinking about it, I think I found the reason. Since this Smash has all previous fighters in it, there is no fear of "who got left out". Whereas before we were hoping for high profiles like Ridley to make it in, we always knew they were competing against veterans AND more "recognizable" characters (Cloud, Ryu, Villager, Rosalina & Luma, etc.). This time around though, we know newcomers aren't competing with veterans for spots, and most of the newcomers we've wanted are already in the game. Combine that with the fact that most of the Nintendo and 3rd-party elite have already made it into the game, there are only a handful of potential newcomers that are deserving of a spot before we start hitting the "bottom of the barrel" characters.

Because of this, the hype is much more intoxicating. The "Isaac's" and "King K. Rool's" are much more likely because every other friggin' major Nintendo character is already in. The "Banjo's" and "Geno's" seem more likely because 3rd-parties are present in droves. For what seems like the first time while waiting for a Smash game, it doesn't feel like I'm hoping for my dreams to come true...I'm just waiting for them to come true.

So every day, I am left to scour the web for something...anything...to satiate my appetite until the next piece of official info drops.

Please let it be soon...

Edit: Before anyone asks, I was in prison because I was the fall guy for my company when they cooked the books. Turns out the IRS doesn't take too kindly to millions of unreported dollars in income.

I vaguely animated Amaterasu's moveset for Smash

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:30 PM PDT

Okay, so

Since the dawn of time (Or when the smash ballot started, which is basically the same thing), I have been begging for my favorite sun doggo to be put into this game. To this end, I have created an entire moveset based on her game of origin, ÅŒkami.

And so, her first gimmick, if you can even call it that, are her weapons. I could have totally made an individual moveset around each weapon MvC style, but that's already Pokemon Trainer's thing. So instead, whatever weapon she has equipped is totally cosmetic. It starts the game as reflector, and beyond that, it's just whatever weapon she's used last. And on that note,

I should probably go into my philosophy in regards to my weapon choices. You'll notice that almost all her grounded normals use the reflector. I wanted the weapon she used to describe the kind of attack it is.
Reflector attacks are quicker, more close ranged attacks, more appropriate for trying to combo off of.
Rosary attacks would be more long range, not necessarily slower but they should be laggier. Mostly used for covering large amounts of space in front of and around you. They would also be multihit, with the final hit being the only one with actual knockback. If you've played ÅŒkami, you know what it should feel like.
And Glaive attacks, would be the bigger, slower, beefier attacks.

And now I can finally talk about some of the decisions I made in her normals. . So:
Jab - A 3 hit combo with the reflector. Ingame, Ammy flies all over the place with this, but with Smash's mechanics, there'd be no way to be able to make that connect reliably.
Utilt - Ammy swings her reflector above her head, I imagine this functioning similarly to Yoshi's utilt. A quick, disjointed combo starter.
Dtilt - Ammy sweeps her reflector low, I imagine this popping enemies up and away from her. It'd probably be a bit busted if she could true combo off of this as well as her utilt, but maybe it could set up for some followup with a good read.
Ftilt - Her first rosary attack, Ammy whips her beads in front of her, batting enemies away.

Up next are Amaterasu's aerials!

Let's just get right into it
Nair - Amaterasu spins her rosary around her body, essentially covering her in a hitbox. I figure it'd work similar to pikachu's new nair. If I'm being perfectly honest, this isn't really based on anything she does (At least not intentionally so), I just thought it looked cool.
Fair - Amaterasu whips her beads in front of her, covering a cone in front of her. As with most of her rosary attacks, it'd be multihit, with the last hit being the only one dealing real knockback.
Dair - Ammy swings her beads in an arc beneath her. Not much to say, maybe there could be a tipper spike hitbox, maybe not.
Bair - Her first Glaive attack. It's Cloud's bair, basically. Pretty straightforward.
Uair - It's Cloud's bair as seen from above. Again, pretty straightforward.

The glaive is a very straightforward weapon. Just big, beefy hits. Which is why it's very prominent in her smash attacks!

FSmash - Big beefy Ike fsmash using her Glaive
DSmash - She swings her glaive around her in a low sweep on both sides to launch at a lower angle
USmash - And the Celestial Brush finally makes its appearance, casting Bloom on the ground in front of her. This is gonna sound more complicated than it is. Basically, the actual ink part of her attack does have a hitbox, although the hitbox is mostly just to pull them towards the sweetspot of the tree popping out of the ground. The sweetspot would be where you expect it, with a sourspot at the base of the tree. The tree would have a small amount of health, but it would decay after about a second or so. I didn't draw that because I'm lazy.

I know what you're thinking, what gives? This far in and we've only seen the brush once? Well, the reason for that is that the brush is a pretty special thing, you can't just throw it on any ol move. It has to be special. A special move. Her specials. The B button.

Neutral Special: Power Slash

The first special I wanna cover is sort of her signature, Power Slash. I can see two ways of this move working. The first, and easier way would be for it to work like Megaman's Metal Blade. You press B and you can hit a direction to make it fire off in that direction. The way I like better though, is for it to work like Quick Attack. You press b, hit a direction. This is the starting point. After a moment, whatever direction you're holding becomes the direction the power slash fires from that starting point. Whatever the case for controlling it would be, this would be a kill move. I imagine it being slow, laggy, and powerful. I mean this move cuts boulders in half, it'd better have to punch to it.

Side Special: Ink Bullets

This move is pretty straightforward. It rapidfire shoots low damage projectiles in front of her for as long as she holds the button. Similar to Fox's blaster, except you can hold the button down.

Down Special: Cherry Bomb

So, if you press the buttons, you get a little bomb that drops in front of you and explodes when it hits the ground.
However, if you've played ÅŒkami, you probably know that if you draw the cherry bomb really big on your screen, the bomb will appear bigger with a longer fuse. To that end, if you smash the input for Cherry bomb (Similar to Samus's super missiles), You will get a larger cherry bomb with a longer fuse. This one won't immediately explode, but will explodes after a couple seconds. While it's on the ground, it can be kicked around like a barrel or one of those wheeled crates, but heavier.

Up Special: Whirlwind

Finally, her recovery, Whirlwind. This is based on an optional brush technique you can find. Here, it creates a small tornado to blow Ammy into the air, without sending her into freefall. It doesn't have a hitbox, however it does have a windbox, blowing anyone by the edge of the tornado up and away, and anyone in the center up with Ammy.

Other things I didn't animate

Dash attack - I forgot to animate this, but her dash attack would obviously be based on the headbutt she does in the overworld to open chests and stuff.

Wall Jump - Ingame, she has the catwalk ability, so she should be able to wall jump

Ledge Tether - I'm still debating if this would be broken or not for her to have on top of all the recovery things she already has, but ingame, she has the vine ability that lets her connect herself and quickly pull herself up to certain objects with a vine. This could easily be represented ingame with a ledge tether, even if it doesnt have a hitbox like any other zair. But again, she already has a lot of recovery tools.

Throws - Most of her throws could just be generic dog throws, but if you shield an attack at just the right time with her reflector as a subweapon in the original game, she would do this rad corkscrew suplex thing, and that should totally be her uthrow.

Alright, that's all I got. I spent a long time on this. upvote me pls.

Give the original smash cast the old 64 models as skins

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 11:37 AM PDT

Considering that Meta Ridley skin might mean we are getting some more costumes (assuming it's not an echo, or replacing the 8th skin of his) for characters, this would be amazing. I would love nothing more than to use DK's 64 model for the fun of it.

Things you want changed for ultimate's online mode

Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:30 PM PDT

Smash4 online has a ton of things that could be improved upon.

First my issues with smash4.

  1. Lag. Self explanatory. Fix the lag. Games like mvci and dbfz have low input lag. It can be done. They can match players based on region or connection strength to reduce lag. In dbfz there is an option to only find players that meet a minimum connection strength.

  2. Terrible matchmaking. Low level players constantly getting matched with high level players make for bad games. Finding 2v2s with all decent players are very rare. Please let me fight similar skilled players. IMO this is just as important as the lag.

  3. Stage variety. Add battlefield forms to the random stage select. Or maybe just let the players choose the stage with the hazards off. To avoid players players picking the terrible stages there should be a stage toggle specifically for online. Omega and battlefield forms will always be enabled in case all stages become disabled by both players.

  4. Tourney mode. Allow for more custom rules. Captain falcon only tourney, sword fighter only tourney, low tier tourney, pokeball tourney, etc.

  5. Leaderboards. Like mario tennis, let us see the rankings of and stats of the top players. Also would be nice to see character specific leaderboards to see who the best players are for each character.

Thoughts? What are some things that you want to see
