Is it just me, or is leather armor more work than iron armor?

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 09:39 AM PDT

When just starting out, I always go straight for iron armor until I have enough diamonds, skipping leather entirely. Gold I sort of get - it's not practical, but it's also not intended to be practical. It's definitely an aesthetic thing.

But with leather, the amount of time it takes to gather the cows and breed enough to make the leather armor (especially without extinguishing your whole herd) is way longer than digging a hole down and mining enough iron for a complete set.

And what's more, just the iron chest plate is nearly the same armor as a full set of leather. That's a mere 8 iron ore. Easily obtainable in less than 5 minutes of mining. And along the way you'll probably get some handy coal, some cobblestone for a starting hut, and the potential for other useful ores like gold or redstone.

Comparitively, to get leather armor you have to break a ton of grass to get seeds, set up a little farm by some water, harvest wheat to feed your cows (which you have to find and gather initially, which may or may not be anywhere near your starting location), and then wait for your baby cows to mature so you can increase your herd before slaughtering them for the leather.

I don't know what solution there is to this, and I guess there's still a place for leather if you're going for a poorly equipped Robin Hood motif, but it just strikes me as odd the inverse effort-to-protection ratio in the two armors...

Official Release Date?

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 07:23 AM PDT

I haven't seen any posts for this yet, so I'm going to stick it here. 1.13 for Java has a release date for July 18th! I know that it can change, but it's something to look forward to. A couple friends and I have a realms server that we've been waiting to restart on in 1.13, so I'm excited for it to come out.
