Learn Dota 2 - A Journey from 420 MMR to 3150 MMR

A Journey from 420 MMR to 3150 MMR

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 08:11 AM PDT

Hello guys, im gon! (No its not about HxH). I follow this subreddit since last winter and i see frequently people asking for help to get out of super low mmr. I think that i still know not too much about this game but i made it from 420 MMR to 3150 MMR. So this is not a guide but a little tale.

Last winter i stopped playing HotS because i did not like the direction the game went after HotS 2.0. It was my first MOBA and i made it there from Preseason Rank 38 (totally shit tier) to Platinum 1. (Thats not too bad) And now i made it from 420 MMR to 3150 MMR in Dota2.

So the first thing i want to tell you is that there is nothing like "Elo-Hell" or bad teammates in 8 out of 10 games. If you played 50 games and your rank did not change, then you simply belong there. You might be able to play one or two tiers higher than you are ranked. But if you are stuck on Crusader you do not belong in Archon. Its you who is a Crusader. Not only your mates. You too! You have to get better to get a better rank.

So i really started to play Dota2 last December. I made a couple of games before but really giving nothing about this game. Way too complicated.

I totally struggled in the beginning. Think i totally underestimated the meaning of farming and items. Got stomped so often. Didnt knew what happened at all. Legion Commanders that just got me totally mad. They just appeared and killed me. How did they do that?! I simply did not know. Clinkz, rikis and so on. I had no idea about lanes and roles and anything.

But I joined rank matches (sorry to everybody whose game i ruined back then) because of one simply reason: Quality of games. You might laugh because i was ranked shit tier but you have people who are taken the game kinda seriously and pick some roles and you dont have too many guys who are just stomping you because everybody is bad af in general.

420 to 1000

A guy i know from the university played sometimes dota and invited me to play with his friends. I was way worse than everybody of them and they made me to support them and i was totally fine with that. So as we played more frequently i really wanted to get better at dota. I got myselfs a pvgna pro subscribtion and watched some stuff about general mechanics and supporting.

So i supported nearly every game. That was totally fine for me. I was (compared to the other players in my rank) shit on the other roles anyway. And since nobody wants to support i could play every game my favorite role.

I think i did not needed to do much more than just watching many hours of general guides on Pvgna.com to make it to 1k.

You have to know Stuff about Damagetypes, Vision, Armor, pulling and stacking camps and so on. There is so much to know about this game. Things that dota do not tell you the easy way. For many things there is a Guide on Pvgna. Watch some of them. Go play a few rounds to enjoy what you have learned. You think you know everything? I doubt that if you are stuck below 1k. I did not. I was where i did belong.

1k to 2k

It wasnt too hard to become a 2k scrub then.

Think i mainly played Dark Willow (easy to climb with her) Disruptor, Lion and Centaur if i had to go on the offlane.

All heroes that can easily secure a kill.

Especially with Dark Willow its pretty easy. It really does not matter which lane you are playing (played mainly safelane supp). With youre Maze and your Shadow Realm you have the tools to win the laning stage most of the times. There are two reasons for that: People do not dodge your maze. They just walk from one root to another and they do not bring enough liferegeneration to the lane to recover quickly from your harass with shadow realm.

Plus your ulti is totally insane. In lower brackets you can fear and root the whole enemy team so often because nobody gives a damn about positioning.

Willow has also nice escape mechanics. You can stun the enemy with your cursed crown. Prevent the whole enemy team from chasing you with your maze. You are not targetable for the most enemies with your shadow realm and you can punish engages on you with your bedlam.

It was a great time getting to 2k.

Hard times - Losing 400 MMR

All of a sudden all the cores i supported were sooooo bad. They were just bad. All of them. Every single one of them.

They were not bad of course. It was me. There was a point i lost a few games in a row. I tilted. Continued to play. Changed more to Venge and Bane. Worked sometimes but mostly not. There was a day i had 6 wins in a row with Bane. Bane was my new Willow. Just to lose as many games i won before with Bane. No Willow.

The Truth is that i just played way too much dota. And the worst thing is that i played way too much dota while i was tilted as fuck.

You just need breaks sometimes. If you lose 2 games in a row on ranked then stop playing ranked. Especially if you are tilted. I would recommend that you just stop playing. I dont do this always myself but everytime i do not stop i will get punished for that.

Dont play when you are tired as well. You will more likely play poorly.

I recovered from this by just having a short break and telling myself to be a positive and friendly guy again. It worked. I got back to 2k and kinda stuck there. I finished the first season as Crusader 5.

2k to 3k - Donté Panlin The Pangolier

Since i was stuck i thought about what to change. So i wanted to have a little bit more impact on the game. I honestly think that you can have as much impact on the game as a supp, but it was what i thought back then. So i made my mind about which role to pick. I tried to roam but i was totally bad at it.

Carry? I dont play Pos1 that well and you can be sure there is always this one wannabe Dota Cristiano Ronaldo who will win you the game by just looking at the safelane. So leave it to Cristiano.

Mid? Contested every game as well.

So whats left? The offlane. It seems like nobody wants to play it. Why? I have no idea.

So i tried some things. Centaur again, Bristle, Axe.

I have a 75% Winrate on Centaur. But its not Herald Tier anymore so it does not work out for me. And its not that much fun.

Bristle? Sometimes. But people know stuff about that Silver Edge. Its just not Herald anymore.

Axe? I got a nice skin but im such a bad axe player. No idea why. Watched a guide and was still shit.

Somehow i tried out Pangolier. Once i got used to the mechanic of swashbuckle i had the time of my dotalife. I love playing him. I really do.

I just dont play him like that racist IceIceIce dude or any of these guys you can watch on Dota.

I play him like a 3k Scrub. No Euls No Blink. Im sure it can be done soooo much better then i do it. But it totally worked out for me. Got me 1K MMR.

If you can convince someone to supp you on the lane its cool, but it will work out if you are solo as well.

I start with a Stout Shield, 6 Tangoes and two mangoes. Getting myself a Quelling Blade on the Sideshop asap. Rushing Mana boots and most of the time a Maelstrom (javelin first) to quickly farm everything. Sometimes i farm too much so the other cores lack gold. Sometimes it causes a lose.

Since people still do not buy too much regen 2k MMR later you will get some kills in general. And the enemies safelane supp does not push you out of the lane most of the times, which they could especially when you are alone. If it happens i consider a soul ring.

Keep always TPs ready to port somewhere to counter engage. Guess Pango is one of the best in doing so. Especially with his ult.

I know that he has a 43.1% winrate on Archon tier but mine is at 58.5%. Guess thats okay. But still could be better. Just try to swashbuckle nicely and learn his talents. Go to https://dota2.gamepedia.com/Pangolier and read what his abilities are doing. Think you will win way more games then you lose betweeen 2k and 3k just because people often do not know what to do and they dont face a pango so often.

I also lost a few games with pango in a row. But remember. Its not Pango. Not the Setup. Not your mates. Its just you who sucks and needs a break. Take a break.

Some general advices:

  1. Be a nice guy. Everybody loves nice people. Nobody likes jerks. If your mates suck dont flame them. Try to tell them in a nice way what they could have done better or that it doesnt matter and you know he can do better and such things. Maybe he cant but calling him the biggest retard on earth wont help you in that situation. So since you want to win the game be nice and encourage your mates to do better. Most of the time they will do better. I got 5124 Commends on 1740 Games by being nice and supportive. (and not hesitating to commend other players)
  2. Talk. Prepick and talk during the Draft. Get yourself a microphone. It makes things a lot easier. Try to bring a good feeling in the team. Sometimes i tell people that they did such a great play that they could go to ti directly and stuff. Everybody knows he will just go to ti by buying a ticket for the arena and thats all in this shit bracket. But he will have more fun playing the game and have more fun playing with you! The more people enjoy the game the more better they play. More MMR for you dude!
  3. If you have the feeling that nobody will support then support. Be ready to sacrifice all your money for wards. I finished games against clinkz or riki on Pos5 with manaboots because i spent all my money on wards and sentries. +MMR
  4. Stop playing if you rage. I rage sometimes too. And im most of the time sorry after that. Have the discipline to stop playing ranked. Id recommend to not play at all.
  5. Dont blame your mates. Especially not the guy who supports. Its not always that there is a ward missing. Sometimes its just your lacking gamesense.
  6. If you get always crushed by the same enemy look at gamepedia to see what will counters the enemy. Thats such a beautiful thing about this game. You can work against most of the enemies.
  7. Dont play too many different heroes imho. Pick a few and be good at them.
  8. Dont play too much. As you guys can see i started playing last december and made roughly 1700 games in that time. Thats just way too much. I could somehow afford that but it affected the University and my relationship. So i have to admit since i started doing more work and spending more time with my girlfriend and friends i play a lot better guys!

This got way longer that i thought it would be tbh. Dont mind my bad english pls.

Feel free to give me advice on anything i can do better. I will always want to learn something.

And yes i know im still totally bad compared to many other players. It may help somebody like many of the things in this subreddit helped me to become a little bit better at dota. I apologize for writing nothing new or special here. Sorry to disappoint you.

Coming back after a year of No Dota. Tips?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 01:28 PM PDT

Hey guys - been out of dota since the end of last TI, I was about 2k mmr with a 50% winrate - played posi 3-5.

Any tips on items/metas/changes to look out for? I've never gone this long without playing since I started in 2013.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the open and vague questions, I am really worried about jumping back in and making it difficult for anyone paired with me.

Laning against Ursa. PLease Help.

Which heroes are good during laning stage against Ursa? How do you lane against him?

When using blink dagger, did you first check if you successfully blinked, then continue to use skill such as Axe’s call?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 12:21 AM PDT

I usually use the skill instantly after the blink, but sometimes I didn't realize that my blink is getting interrupted by enemy, resulting me to waste the skill.

Weird Question

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 04:01 PM PDT

How do you handle the nerves? I've decided to focus primarily on position 3 but wanted to practice some mid to work on my laning mechanics. Every time I died (not due to good rotations but due to poor decisions), I literally felt ill to my stomach. Even now, I still feel it. I won the lane, solo killed qop (as mk) after outlevelling her by 2 levels, by then died the next time I almost killed her because Riki was there. Killed her and him a time or two. But every time I stopped farming and went to a fight, I died. If I farmed, I got pick offs. The whole game I was anxious and felt this intense pressure. Now, after I've lost, I still feel this terrible nausea (not figurative) knowing that we could have won if I had played better. Should I just forget it and go back to the offlane? Pos 1/2 just literally makes me feel sick. What's the game plan mid? If I pushed and farmed, I lived and got a couple pick offs. If I fought, I died. What should most mids be doing at different phases of the game? I ended up in lane farming for 17 minutes! 17! And I didn't take the tower for fear of Riki and Nyx. I have no clue what I'm doing. So: advice? As a mid and if you've ever felt that anxiety/nausea. I still feel jittery and nauseous.

Leaving bad lanes as an Offlaner?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 02:11 AM PDT

Hi,
I just watched an offlane coaching session from BSJ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrK6hzuMOf0) and in the last 10 minutes he talks about what to do in a shit lane (in this example a ursa/kunkka/CM trilane just runs over Axe). The advice is to go to other lanes or to the jungles and let the supports defend it.

I have some questions/concerns here: Wouldn't this just give the opponent the opportunity to easily take T1 and even T2 since the poor supports are also way weaker than the trilane? I was that Axe I assume my teammates would just rage at me "GG, noob Axe leaving Ursa free farm", "GG, two towers lost"...

My problem is that I know that Axe can't do anything in the bot lane but every solution that is offered leads to a lost lane and a snowballing Radiant team (at least from my noob perspective).

Can anyone help me here and enlighten me?

Quick Laning Question

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 10:53 AM PDT

Hey, there guys 2k scrub here. I've been watching some higher level play recently and noticed I do something very differently (shocking right?). So in a lane, I often do a back and forth motion, and think of the lane like a slide moving forward and backward. So I move up for a last-hit and then walk back afterward in order to prevent myself from drawing creep aggro or getting harassed by the enemy hero. I always feel very on edge in the lane and unsafe. Should I try to alter my laning phase to be more stagnant, and if so what should I be on the lookout for to actually retreat, or is this style of "safely laning" effective in the long run? Thank you for any advice.

Had the worst Tinker game ever and learned so much from it!

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 01:08 AM PDT

I'm currently learning Tinker and this game clearly showed my biggest weakness. I was so tilted after the match and it hurts to re-watch that game but I did take a short brake, didn't que into another game, and downloaded the replay.

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4012303119

So what did I learned from this? First and most important, I'm not ready yet. If I'm really honest I should not play Tinker in ranked but rather practice in unranked and bot matches. Also I learned how bad it was (drafting wise) to pick Tinker here. SB and Zeus simply destroyed me and once Zeus got Nimbus the game was simply unplayable. So this was the second thing I noticed in the replay. And the third thing is, laning stage was okay-ish but I didn't bought the right items and took advantage. Meaning I was totally in auto-pilot mode, buying the same default stuff like always. I could by linkens, euls even a bkb would be fine here. But I just didn't.

So feel free to add things I'm missing in my own analysis. Thanks!

ps.: checking your own replay is pretty boring but it pays off! Especially these games where you're so tilted that you don't even want to re-watch it at all. The more it hurts the better it is ;)

I don't understand BH's 50% evasion talent

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 02:28 PM PDT

The one he gets at level 25 - I don't get it. What does it offer? Any right click core will likely have an MKB by the time he is 25, considering evasion is so prevalent in the meta (Solar Crests, Halberds, Butterflies) and MKB now being more cost efficient than it used to be. I understand that his level 25 talents are intentionally weaker than average considering he has a level 10 exp talent and is good at getting kills, but the talent just seems underwhelming.

The talent just feels really weird. It's even worse when considering that his other talent is also rather situational - +300 Track gold is great if you managed to nab a lot of assists/kills, made use of your exp talent at 10, and hit 25 early on. Doesn't feel great when you had an okay game at best and by the time you hit 25, most of your team is already almost 6 slotted anyway.

I'd like to see his evasion talent replaced with something that caters to his right click build. Something like "+1 Jinada charge" or "Jinada lowers target's armor." Even something like "+35% magic resistance" would be better than what he has now.

What do you guys think?

Couple questions/issues about setting hotkeys to side mouse buttons (Razer Naga Mouse)

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 02:11 PM PDT

Ok does anyone set any hotkeys to their side buttons on their mouse?

I have 12 buttons in a grid format (Check Razer Naga images if you're curious) and I affix some of these hotkeys to certain item slots.

But I just came to a painful realization today...

When every micro second counts sometimes... having to hit a hotkey with your thumb AND then click... can cost you your life.

Are these keybinds useless? Spacebar is my all time favorite because my left hand thumb is always resting near that area so I can instantly hit it. Typically I use the spacebar for blink.

Anyone have any tips they'd like to share?

Reposted from /r/truedota2

Hi, Stormyq here again.

I've just completed my latest review on a Legend 2 safelane carry Necrophos. In this review I talk about item choices, how some carries need EXP, farming patterns as a Necrophos, positioning and taking correct fights.

It is 23 pages in total. Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wZZGbg4M3NSLBNB6V3WyGHC15AcAJqipZmpsVpDW2sQ/edit?usp=sharing

For anyone interested in my services, please do not hesitate to PM me or contact me at stormyqwer@gmail.com.

I currently am experiencing heavy workload (I still have around 5 reviews to get to) so expect more public reviews to be posted. If you enjoy my writing please do look forward to them!

What to do if lanes have too many greedy cores?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 05:52 AM PDT

This is another common "shit tier" problem. 4 or 5 core lineup, everyone is fighting for farm. Doesn't matter who picked when or what, because coordinated team play doesn't exist down here for the most part. You get stuck with another core in lane that wants farm, this is obviously not going to work out for you so much. What is your best option?

  1. Jungle. Yes I know its bad, but is it worse than 2 cores competing for farm in lane and being under-leveled and under farmed?
  2. Make the most of it. Stay put and suck it up. Do what you can.
  3. Switch lanes. Might not be possible in a 4 or 5 core lineup or might not improve your situation.
  4. Change your item build to cheap items only, or a "supporting build". That battle-fury isn't happening, so start saving for that glimmer cape & eul's Juggernaut.
  5. Roam. Show that mid laner what 2 levels of right click fury can do!

All jokes aside, this happens so much and i rarely know the correct choice. You can first pick a core, and it means nothing. You can last pick a core with 4 supports showing, they will compete for farm. You can't control them, and flaming won't do you a bit of good. What is your best option?

This match recently, but happens often enough: https://www.opendota.com/matches/4012980963/overview

Drafting Challenge 2

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 11:27 AM PDT

Hiya.

So last challenge got some traction and I think a bunch of us learned a lot. So here we are, round 2!

The challenge is simple: Analyze an opponent's draft, and figure out how to throttle their win condition, or even better, win yourself! - be it through tempo, farm, teamfight, aggressiveness, power spikes, itemization, abusing weaknesses or hero counters.

I've drafted 3 opponent teams:

1) Rubick, Warlock, Axe, Templar Assassin, Sven

2) Shadow Shaman, Elder Titan, Bristleback, Sniper, Monkey King

3) Treant Protector, Vengeful Spirit, Brewmaster, Zeus, Lycan

What strikes your mind seing one of these lineups? What's your thought process going into a game against a draft like this?

Let's learn!

I think i've identified a big leak in my game

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 02:34 AM PDT

I play P3 (mostly) and P4. New player/very low MMR (700-800).

I think that besides my shitty mechanics and tendency to tilt, I'm doing one big mistake. But I'm actually not 100% sure it's a mistake, I need you to tell me if it's something I need to change in my game :

Doesn't matter if i'm playing P3, P4 or (rarely) even P5, I can't resist pushing back a wave of creeps. I even used to do it way too deep, getting caught and dying. I think I'm a bit less greedy now and die less. The thing is though, that I'm not playing a true carry (although a lot of P3 necro) and I leave my team alone a lot. I read regularly that you should ignore your team, push the waves, get the farm. But does that only apply to P1 or P2 ? Should you do it as a greedy'ish P3 too ? Or should you be 100% available to fight with your team ? I feel like my assists count is a bit low and that when I get the items I'm somewhat satisfied with, the game is often over in a way or the other and I didn't have that much impact in the result.

The tl;dr version could be: as a P3/P4 what do you do when there is a free wave in your half of the map but your team is taking bad fights all the time because it's low MMR. Stay with your team ? Go get the farm and take the chance they'll fight without you and die ? I think I know the answer for a P1 in early/mid game, but a P3 ?

I can only play turbo... :\ Anyone else?

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 10:27 PM PDT

So for the past year, I've been doing the "all hero challenge" and I'm having a lot of fun. However, recently, I got hit with low priority and I've been playing single draft. The games take so long and end up being 35-70 minutes. After so much time, a defeat feels crushing and victories don't even feel as good, knowing that you could've wasted all that time if you lost.

Anyone else have the same problem?

How do you snipers win a matchup against Juggernaut?

Posted: 19 Jul 2018 12:24 AM PDT

How do you snipers win a matchup against Juggernaut? In this scenario, I am Sniper who played mid lane and the opponent #1 Jugg played carry role.
I will attach an image of dotabuff team overall stats.

In my legend 4 bracket ranked team, we had tempo went from winning early team fight executions to able to steam roll & broke their mid tier3 tower. And then things went to hell, after jugg took dagger and took surgery cut on me every war I show up in their radar.

How do you actually compensate this? Positioning, itemwise maybe I shoulda skipped the useless shadowblade?
