Should you be able to lose era score?

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:19 PM PDT

I like a lot of elements that Rise and Fall added to civ 6, even if it's not perfect yet still (I'd personally love to see more focus on diplomacy, ideology and rebellion/revolution). But when it comes to era score, dark ages don't really exist. Its just a " not good enough age." I was wondering what you guys would think if there was some sort of penalty for bad things in your empire like maybe losing cities in a war or starvation etc. Or would that only be more frustrating?

Civ 5 & 6 are like Magic the Gathering

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 10:11 AM PDT

This is just a quick appreciation post.

I haven't been playing Civ as much due to time constraints, but I have been watching Youtubes (like SaxyGamer--good stuff!!!) of tips, and I'm realizing that even after it's been out for so long I really don't know so much about the game. Far from a negative, it's been making me want to jump right back in.

This is really similar to Magic the Gathering. I've been playing the game since Weatherlight (1998?) and just keep finding new ways to play, min-max, strategize, etc.

That is all.

I've been missing out!

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:09 PM PDT

I've always liked strategy oriented video/board games, but never really found one that I loved. I had never played civilization before, and seen it a few times, but for some reason I wasn't very interested in it. Fast forward two days ago, I see on the steam summer sale Civilization 3 is just $1.25, so I say screw it and buy it. I haven't been able to stop playing it since. My only regret is how much of my life I HAVEN'T been playing this game.

I really need an option to discuss on CS

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 08:33 AM PDT

City states is a big part of civ6. Really hate it when AI sees that they cannot be the suzerain of a CS, they will attack it, even if their bonus yields for 3/6 envoys helps the AI immensely. For the AI lose-lose is always better than win-win.

Normally, when my CS is attacked I'd just declared war on the AI. But if the AI is my friend, I cannot do anything (beside parking units around so they can't attack). I need an option to discuss with the AI (like when they forward settle, convert my cities or spy on me). Even though AI rarely reply nicely to a discuss, it's still better than nothing.

Currently, it's like having your little bro punched by your cousins and the only thing you could do is either watch or punch back. No talk. Now that's dumb.

Playing as Arabia. I own my own capital as well as five others. The Byzantines own Moscow, and the Celts own Rio. But I have both of their original capitals.

I thought domination was near instant once you took the v last original capital... thanks

The only condition I have off is time.

"Please Wait" Before Turn Starts

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:52 PM PDT

My friends and I have been playing a round of Civilization 5 for 6 hours at this point and my friend keeps getting stuck with a please wait prompt. His turn hasn't started, we've restarted the game from a save 5 times, he's pressed period and space and it ISN'T any units holding him up. Any ideas?

What's this about a spyware in civ VI?

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:46 AM PDT

All recent steam review of the game talk about a RedShell spyware, wich turned me away from buying it. Is this true? Should i get civ V or VI and just wait until they "fix" this?

Civ 6 - Mod to add a "Show/Hide Pins" toggle?

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 10:08 AM PDT

I really like having pins to plan out cities but they really add to the clutter. Is there a mod that would let me turn them off until I want to check what I've pinned?

Is there a way to prevent the ai from doing anything when one player crashes during a multiplayer session? We're playing simultaneously, CIV 6.

Civ 6 diplomacy screen bugging out.

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 04:31 PM PDT

I'm playing in windowed, and whenever I open a another country to do diplomacy it flickers. It gets worse when I get a trade, and even worse when I try to change the amount of something. (i literally just have to go off muscle memory, since I can't see the box when I try to change gold.)

I'm not running any mods, does anyone know why this is happening? (also my game can't tab out when i'm in full screen for some reason)

Civ VI vs. Civ V - I'm still on the fence

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 10:23 AM PDT

I am a long time Civ player going all the way back to Civ I and including Colonization and Alpha Centauri. The struggle between Civ VI and Civ V is real.

The big improvements in Civ VI are the districts, the Eurekas, and the great persons. The districts end wonder hoarding, and now for the first time, I am willing to let a wonder go if it means messing up my perfectly arranged tiles. The Eurekas just make sense because discoveries are influenced by the way I play the game. The great persons provide a bit of strategy in which types you want to generate and who to choose. Spying also has some nice changes but I miss the days of Civ II when I could use spies to buy cities and place nukes in suitcase bombs.

Unfortunately for Civ VI, Civ V has many gameplay features that seem better. Puppetting cities mean less time spent going through the motions. Overall Civ V has more automation less time spent on routine taks: you don't have to make a new builder to improve more tiles, you don't need an industrial zone to make a factory, etc. Civ VI encourages players to go wide, and though its nice to see that come back, the downside is all that time spend building monument-granary-water mill.

Civ V also has a much better diplomacy system. Civ VI diplomacy breaks down into everyone hating me for warmongering even if I never started the wars. There is no world congress, little opportunity to pit enemies against each other, and little use of city states except for suzerian bonuses. On the topic of city states, I wasn't entirely happy with them in Civ V. They clutter up the map and have dubious returns for the amount of gold it takes to make them allies. Civ VI does have the advantage that allegiances are based on the number of Envoys which are generated automatically (who doesn't take that card for diplomacy?). Still, it seems silly that some city states provide incredible bonuses while others are worthless. Mostly the city states clutter the map and provide an easy path for enemies to gain allies when they declare war on you.

Other than that, the games are about the same. War hasn't changed. (War never changes.) You can push an early rush with with some civs (War Carts!) but usually war is best put off until gunpowder and the late tank rush. After playing through half the civs in Civ VI, I'm going back to Civ V for building tall Korea victory.

Civ IV R&F Question: ...wait, wait, just one more turn!!

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 12:27 PM PDT

Hey, I messed up! I had an awesome game going in IV R&F and I got to the end of the play clock and it will not give me the option to keep playing via the classic ...wait, wait, just one more turn, button. Any way to circumvent this issue, or am I done for?

Free city pillage abuse

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 04:10 PM PDT

After a few games where I found I was getting ahead significantly in classical/medieval/renaissance wars without actually capturing any cities, I realized that a lot of the progress was from pillaging enemy cities while I had the Raid policy card. It seems like pillaging free cities can actually be abused pretty hard - has anyone tried something like this, for example?

  1. Settle around a CS

  2. Capture it

  3. Give the CS as many tiles as possible, and construct as many mines as you can.

  4. Gift the city to an opponent, preferably in a dark age. They'll start losing loyalty immediately.

  5. Wait for the flip. Pillage all the mines. Mine are +50 science each with the raid card, which is ridiculous in earlier eras.

  6. Retake the city. Repair all the improvements.

  7. Repeat steps 4-6.

Assuming the whole cycle takes 10 turns and you can pillage 20 mines, that would be ~100 bpt, and you could probably set the whole system up by late classical/early medieval if you were going hard. What do you guys think?
