Recalibration Discussion Mega-Thread

Posted: 08 Jun 2018 08:56 PM PDT

The sub has been cluttered with way too many topics about this subject for the past few days, so for now I will temporarily be removing all threads on the topic and directing them here to reduce spam. Below are a couple conversations I left up that you may feel free to reference and continue:

In the future, please remember that discussing Valve's MMR policies is not directly related to gameplay unless you're asking about tips for how to play/pick at a certain MMR or something like that, and to please avoid littering this sub with threads about meta topics that are meant to be left to /r/dota2 next time there are changes like this.

How to deal with Io?

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 11:29 AM PDT

This might be a big ask, but how do you guys deal with Io? Pro teams don't seem to have a reliable way of dealing with him (other than first banning it every game). Looking at Dotabuff, he seems to do poorly vs multiple units and gap closers. I guess spirit vessel's the main item counter.

I don't see the hero that often in my pubs (5.2k party, normally Ancient 3-5 avg games) but when I do it seems to take over the whole game. Just wondering if you guys have any thoughts

[Spoilers: China Supermajor] Was MidOne's unusual Ember Spirit build the correct one?

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 12:31 AM PDT

The build:

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3941422211/builds

I'd like to start a discussion on a very unusual Ember Spirit build by MidOne. Strangely, he skilled Sleight of Fist at 1, 3, 5, and 7, skipping Flame Guard until 10. Much more strangely, he built Aeon Disk as his first major item. He generally went for a utility focused build, as he also bought a Blink Dagger and a Scythe of Vyse.

A few questions to discuss:

  • Was Aeon Disk an appropriate purchase for that game?
  • Should he have bought a farming or damage item (such as a Maelstrom or Veil of Discord) before the Aeon Disk?
  • What was his reasoning behind skipping Flame Guard?
  • Was Flame Guard worth skipping?
  • Is Aeon Disk viable on Ember Spirit in many other games, or was this just a rare niche?
  • Is a low damage, utility focused Ember Spirit build viable?

Where can I find comprehensive guides on specific heroes?

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 02:21 PM PDT

I'm a scrub who used to play other mobas but transitioned into dota. I'm looking for guides that have info on what role a hero plays in teamfights or why building a specific item is good and by what time. That sort of thing.

Why does it seem shiva's is so heavily preferred to AC?

Posted: 08 Jun 2018 08:00 PM PDT

Just now VP picks up 2 shiva's, on a sand King and a DP neither really buy AC but having an armor aura on top of the shiva's aura seems like it would be better than the double shiva's. I've seen this a few times and it is a little confusing to me, especially when a core that would seem to benefit from the offensive potential of the AC goes shiva's.

Is AC bad, or is Shiva's just that good?

[Spoilers: China Supermajor] How Chalice should have played Bloodseeker(Or how to make the best out a bad situation)

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 07:25 AM PDT

The game in question:

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3942119450

Aside from the obvious outdrafting, Chalice made a lot of questionable decisions and mistakes when playing on Bloodseeker, which completely nullified any advantage PSG.LGD got in the laning phase against Liquid, and allowed Liquid to take over complete control of the game . There are a lot of things he could have done differently, things that, although would not guarantee victory, would at least make up for the bad situation where he was placed at.

The first one is about how he should have approached the laning phase . Given that the Doom + WR is a laning combo that can break almost any defensive trilane, his best bet would be to retreat the wave and farm under his own tower . To do so, he'd have to do the following:

  • 1)Either Bloodseeker or Jakiro goes and block their first creep wave, letting the ranged creep go through

  • 2)Bloodseeker uses Bloodrage on allied creeps who are getting attacked by more than 2 enemy creeps, so that the lane could retreat

  • 3)Once under the enemy tower, and once Doom is not nearby, then Bloodseeker can use Bloodrage on himself to score some last hits

  • 4)Optionally, they could have blocked the camp adjacent to the lane with a sentry, so that Doom and WR don't pull creep waves to them

With this approach, the starting item could be Tango, Stout Shield, Salve and lastly, Mango instead of Faerie Fire

Secondly, since he was in a backfoot position, his build would have to be one more focused on utility over damage . With that in mind, and based on how the game was going, he could go into an "aura build", with Pipe of Insight, Mek and Force Staff . Pipe would protect his teammates against the constant damage of Tinker, Mek would provide a source of healing against Doom, and Force Staff could be used to save teammates against any advances of Liquid, or it can be used offensively, to ensure better Ruptures

Lastly, the skill build could be something like 2-4-1-1, with 2 points in Q at lvl 3, so that Chalice could better control the creep equilibrium, and maxing first W and Q, to fend off the constant pushes of Liquid. Anything more than 2 points in Thrist in the early game would be a waste

There's more that can be said, of course, but this is at least a starting point on how to make the best out of a bad situation, when you are playing with Bloodseeker

Is there a strat with Morphling+Shadow Demon?

Posted: 08 Jun 2018 04:28 PM PDT

So morphling plus shadow demon already has synergy. Morph's illusions are good and benefits from disruption saving him from lockdown/silences.

But what's the interaction between shadow poison and if morph uses shadow poison? Obviously morphling doesn't get shadow demon's talents, but does the shadow demon poison function off shadow demon's debuff? Do they share a debuff? Or is it two separate debuff stacks?

Once SD gets the poison CD talent, it takes roughly 5 seconds to get 5 stacks on someone. But with morphling, they could disrupt someone and get all five stacks within a 2.5 second disruption duration.

Also, would this mean that morphling poison does the 1k max damage while SD with a poison damage talent does 1300? Or since SD cast one of them, would it could as the higher damage?
