Effective health values for the cast of Street Fighter V

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 03:36 AM PDT

Sorry if this has been posted before. I've never seen it myself and a google search brought up nothing.

I've always been curious about how the health-based damage scaling (sometimes called guts) in street fighter 5 actually effects the amount of damage the roster can take. Back when Akuma got his health buffed to 900, I remember hearing a lot of commentators saying stuff like "it might not sound like much but when you take scaling into account that 25 health is actually more like 50" but never saw any proof to back that statement up, so I did some math (actually, microsoft excel did some math because math is for nerds whereas conjuring a spreadsheet full of equations to learn more about video game characters is cruise control for cool) and found out the effective health values of every character in the game.

Bear in mind these should be taken with a huge grain of salt since health-based damage scaling does not apply mid combo. If Akuma has 51% health and you land a full jump-in combo into super, he's going to take full damage and probably die because he's a tiny baby who can't take a punch. It would be more accurate to say a character's health is between their base value and effective health, depending on the round, with these effective health values being the very best case scenario.

For those who don't know, the way health-based damage scaling works is: Characters take full damage until they reach half life, then start taking reduced damage. Damage is reduced by 5% from 50-30% health, 10% from 30-15% health and 25% from 15% health until knockout. This stacks multiplicatively with combo scaling, which is why your sick combos aren't doing dick to that near-death Zangief.

Health values! (All have been rounded to the nearest whole number)

875 Health: (Season 2 Akuma) - 943 Effective Health

900 Health: (Akuma, Cammy, Karin) - 969 Effective Health

925 Health: (Dhalsim, Ibuki) - 996 Effective Health

950 Health: (Most zoners, Chun, Nash, Rashid, Mika, Sakura) - 1023 Effective Health

1000 Health: (Everyone else) - 1077 Effective Health

1025 Health: (Alex, Birdie) - 1104 Effective Health

1050 Health: (Gief) - 1131 Effective Health

1075 Health: (Abigail) - 1158 Effective Health

1100 Health: (Pre-nerf Abigail) - 1185 Effective Health

Wowie! That 25 health buff to Akuma was actually... 26 health. These numbers were a lot lower than I was expecting. Essentially the moral of the story is that a 25 health buff is almost exactly what it looks like (it's still going to help in certain situations of course), that zoners and poke-based characters are more likely going to have to do about 70-80 more damage than combo monsters (since they rely more on stray hits and are going to trigger the health-based damage scaling cut-offs sooner) and I have wasted my morning. I hope this was at least somewhat informative to somebody out there. I'm going back to bed.

Don't upvote, anybody have a VOD for the 30th Anniversary Invite tournament at Combo Breaker?

Posted: 13 Jun 2018 03:57 PM PDT

I just heard about this, no idea how I missed this until now. I can't find a VOD anywhere and I'm hoping somebody here has a link. I checked TeamSp00ky's twitch and CapcomFighters youtube (Don't have a twitch sub to capcom) but I didn't see it.

Ultra street fighter 2 still worth picking up?

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 08:28 AM PDT

Ultra street fighter 2 is on sale on the eshop and i want it, but i'm unsure if it's still worth picking up now that SF 30th anniversary collection is out. Do people still even play this game? Would appreciate some replies.

Why is Dhalsim only considered a mid-tier character?

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 05:06 AM PDT

What is he missing right now?

He has:

  • Dive kick(s)
  • A 3f AA normal
  • Long throw range
  • Throwbait that is plus on block
  • Good defense normals (c.hp especially)
  • Can fly
  • Strong set play
  • Many dominant matchups

Is it just that he gets rushed down by the characters at the very top like Cammy? What happens when she gets nerfed?

For the games in the 30th edition collection, how do you do throws and super'ss?

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 09:54 AM PDT

Clearly, for SF 1, throws don't exist, and you have just the standard SF 2 Ryu Special, but more... Precise requirements.

Are supers always double motions?

What is an example of bad netcode in SFV?

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 08:43 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to fighting games so I'm not all too confident with my experience with fighting game netcode. I know it has something to do with hitreg such as FPS games. But in what sense does it present itself that much in SFV where people are actively outraged by it?

Guile is amazing to play but i need help :/

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 08:39 AM PDT

I've recently switched to guile and although I still don't fully understand his combos, I managed to get to ultra bronze without loosing a single match on a new account. Not an amazing feat as they mostly fell for cross up combos, but now I'm at silver I'm hitting a bump with him. It feels like now I've switched to guile not many people see him as a threat, I try to zone and I get outsmarted even by characters like zangief. His armour and double lariat can make my booms useless, forcing to get up close and this where I struggle. I don't know how to use guile up close, I just keep relying on crouching LP x 2 then flash kick or boom. I've looked on YouTube for combo guides but there arnt many for up close play, more zoning traps.

When I've fought guile I've kept my distance until I could get close I rarely jumped in out of fear of the flash kick. Now that I'm playing guile they are jumping everywhere making it hard to work on my zoning. I can anti air pretty good but it's up close where i get beaten on.

How do i stay patient like the guiles I've faced at higher ranks ? I give in and start jumping around like a dick head.

Some characters giving me trouble are

R mika (she seems really hard to keep zoned)

Zeku (used to play zeku so know that he can beat guile pretty well)

Zangief

Ryu

Akuma

Abigail

Some questions

People say that back HP will crush counter certain moves how do I take advantage of this ?

Is standing HP safe on block and will the crouching MP afterwards always counter ?

How to I use bazooka knee properly ? I've learned the bazooka knee - crouching LP- l sonic boom - crouching MP - M boom frame trap. But the bazooka knee usually gets interrupted. Is his mid air MK a safer option ?

Any tips to help me improve would be amazing.

Me ( super gold Laura) preparing for a mm against a rival (plat akuma) anyone got tips because this matchup is brutal.

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 08:23 AM PDT

Akuma seems to occupy all the space I want to be in but does it better and with a low short that leads into a combo that leads into oki I quickly find myself on the defensive the entire match.

Earning fight money offline (SFV)

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 07:59 AM PDT

I've just started playing sfv again after a long break and I'm trying to get back into it as I struggled to when I initially got it (I'm not very good, but I do enjoy fighting games).

However, I see since the arcade update that you can't earn fight money very easily offline anymore. This is a major problem for me as I want to unlock the new fighters but it doesn't seem possible right now with the amount of fight money I'm earning, and I know I can earn more online but I get destroyed cause I'm a very casual player. Does anyone have any suggestions, or is the only real option to unlock all the characters going to be through paying for them?

Who’s your top 3 favorite characters

Posted: 14 Jun 2018 01:35 AM PDT

My list: 1. Akuma- he's arguably the most badass character in video games and one of the most interesting characters in all of SF 2.Sakura- she's another one of the most interesting character in SF, after every play through of sakura story modes i just want to know more about her, her character personality is just really likable 3.ken- when i was younger ken was my go to character since i wasn't to good in SF and his style was just really appealing, he was like ryu just the "looser" version i guess lol
