Skyrim - Oh ho, been waiting for this!

Oh ho, been waiting for this!

Finally downloaded the alternative start mod. After six years of reconciling why I was caught crossing the border, I’m now standing on the northern coast of Tamriel, the only survivor of a shipwreck, armed with only an iron dagger and the gear of my drowned shipmates. Like a whole new game!

To everyone asking if they should play Oblivion and what to expect as Skyrim players

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:55 AM PDT

I'm seeing this question popping up again and again so instead of replying each time lemme help you a little bit. As someone who has played both games for a long time I'll try to give you a detailed and hopefully not monstrous post. Always keep in mind it comes down to preference and personal taste.

Guilds:

-Fighter's Guild has about the same feeling in Oblivion like the Companions. You're like a mercenary, you're needed somewhere you kill stuff, halfway through change of pace. There are different strengths and weaknesses. I'd say quest-wise it's overall a bit weaker than the Companions but has some REALLY good twists, as well as a lot of hidden stuff for you to discover.

-Mage's Guild. Skyrim has Labyrinthian which is an amazing experience, it beats a lot on its own. I also really like the excavation mission early on and Mzulft is a great dwemer ruin (but if you've done a few already it has no impact). In Oblivion it is split in two parts, entry and ranking. The first part has you visiting every city to get a recommendation from the various Guilds to enter the Arcane University. Unlike Skyrim these require actual magic competence from you and are unique quests for the most part. Afterwards you'll start University quests which are for the most part good. (Hint: vampires also exist in Oblivion. If you wish to do the Cure quest, finish mage's guild first due to a serious bug).

-Dark Brotherhood. Due to innability to spoil stuff I'll put it simply: in Oblivion the first DB half is amazing and falls fairly flat on the second half. It's overall great though. Skyrim for me is the opposite, better 2nd half with weaker start. Stealth will be demanded for all rewards.

-Thieve's Guild. In Skyrim it's a rebuilding process and as such you have the 4 city quests (with 20 Vex/Mallory quests earlier) which are fairly good. In Oblivion the side stuff is measure: steal stuff, sell said stuff, the more the better. Questline in Skyrim is great. Did you like it? Cause it's even better in Oblivion. Not only are almost all quests unique, all require stealth and finesse of some kind. Plus the final quest is just glorious.

Main Story: Personally I prefer the Oblivion main story to Skyrim. In Skyrim it lacks urgency yet every quest feels like "do the next one, now!". Dragons are the main threat but after you've killed a few you've killed all, there is no true variety. In Oblivion you're set in the end of the third era and the events of the Oblivion Crisis. For the most part the quests are more memorable to me and the stakes always feel high. As you progress landscapes are altered, cities feel hostile. And the plains of Oblivion have a great variety and exploration, while always be challenging.

Daedric Quests: I can analyze each Prince's quest for Oblivion and Skyrim in detail but I won't cause it'll be double the post (some other time). In my opinion Oblivion has the better and more unique Daedric quests compared to Skyrim. There are a few exceptions which fall in "eh, ok" category but you'll probably enjoy them if you liked Skyrim's.

Other Quests: I throw the term unique around a lot. Well that's the strength of the game really. Oblivion doesn't have the amount of quests Skyrim has or the dynamic links, but what it lacks in quantity it gains in quality. Almost every quest feels unique cause they try to separate them somehow from being generic dungeon crawls. But that's up to you to decide. (still nothing beats Lifting The Vale's first experience)

Skyrim has handcrafted dungeons so obviously Oblivion's dungeons fall flat in comparison. Most types are the same and instead of Dwemer Ruins you have Ayleid Ruins. There are some dungeons with unmarked quests or interesting things however which have a bigger impact cause in Oblivion you expect most caves to be generic, so when you stumble upon something great you feel rewarded with your exploration. I recommend checking Sideways & Kingscrest Caverns, there are quite a few though.

To finish the already long post:

-Combat is better in Skyrim, but if you play a stealth character you'll hardly notice much difference. Close combat characters will need to use backwards/sideways power attacks more and while responsive feel robotic, you also have an Unarmed Combat skill here so if you feel like it punch everything to death (you also cannot dual weild two weapons besides your fists).

-Magic doesn't take a hand slot and you can cast no matter what you play, higher tier spells will however require a specific level threshold (f.e. Adept Restoration spells can't be cast unless your Restoration skill is 50 or above). You can create custom spells which opens up that area A LOT. Bigger variety than Skyrim but less impact (again up to you, you can be more creative in Oblivion)

-You need to pick a class early on and you'll only level up through the 10 major skills of this class. Basically make your custom class and pick wisely early on. Skills level up in many ways f.e. you can level up magic schools by casting the spells anytime.

-There are unique items hidden out in the world as well as a few unmarked quests. Exploration is always your friend.

-You can acquire items that you shouldn't be able to and "break" the game without console commands if you are smart enough (or read how online). It's fun.

Too long didn't read: play the damn game, it's very good.

Shadow hide you.

Karliah is the Heir of Barenziah and the First Nightingale

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:38 AM PDT

Recently, a close friend of mine pointed out that Karliah has purple eyes, when every other dark elf has red eyes. I was confused by this, so I did the first thing that came to mind and searched the Elder Scrolls Wikipedia. This fact was noted, but no explanation was given as to why. I was getting irritated, and began to search the code for the game. I started by searching Karliah, but was just given some basic voice lines and models. Here's where it gets interesting.

I found a mention of Karliah in a book called: The Nightingales, Vol. 2. I had never seen this book in game, and so my curiosity was peaked. The book had a basic weight of one, but an outstanding value of 500 septims. There were two volumes, and so I started with the first.

It was a pretty basic book, but what stuck out to me was that it was written by Gallus Desidenius, the Nightingale who was guild master of the thieves guild before Mercer Frey killed him and took his role. The Nightingale logo was right underneath the words 'The Nightingales Volume 1: Who We Are

The first volume was some basic level reading and all information that Karliah explains to you after you finish the thieves guild quest line. Still, it's worth a read.

The second volume was far more interesting. It's about the history of the Nightingales. If you've read The Biography of Barenziah or The Real Barenziah, it's related to that. The book addresses the famous 'Nightingale' who was supposedly a bard who seduced Barenziah in order to acquire the Staff of Chaos. Gallus then disproves the idea that the Nightingale was secretly Jagar Tharn, and writes it off as Barenziah making up an excuse. He then pins the Nightingale as a thief named Drayven Indoril, who was hired by Jagar Tharn to seduce Barenziah and steal the staff for him. Jagar Tharn tried to kill him with the staff, but Drayven avoided that fate and fled to Shor's Stone, and lived out his days there.

Here's what the Biography of Barenziah and The Real Barenziah leave out: Barenziah was impregnated by the Nightingale and gave the child up in order to avoid ridicule. The child grows into a woman named Dralsi who goes on a journey to find her father. Dralsi "finally located him in a small mining community called Shor's Stone. He was quite elderly now... no longer the spry rouge that seduced Barenziah, but nevertheless he was still Dralsi's father." Gallus then tells about how Drayven taught Dralsi the ways of the nightingale before passing on to the next life.

Eventually, Dralsi had a child with an unknown man, and named it Karliah. My first reaction was: "this is a coincidence," but as I read further, I was shocked.

Gallus explains how Karliah joined the thieves guild that he lead at the time. He describes her accession up the guild ladder and how she eventually became a nightingale along with Mercer Frey and Gallus.

But wait, Dralsi was Barenziah's first born, and therefore the rightful heir to the throne. If Karliah is not only the granddaughter of the first Nightingale, but also Queen Barenziah (who has no other know heirs,) does that mean that she's the rightful queen? And then, wouldn't the crown of Barenziah that you make after finding all of the stone of Barenziah hers?

I think it is, because why would Bethesda put several books about Barenziah, a crown, and introduce a new group (or faction) that are all so clearly tied together, for no reason? It just makes sense to me. I still don't know why she has purple eyes though. And, this could all be conjecture, because it is from a source that some would call biased, as Gallus clearly had a romantic relationship with Karliah. Although, Gallus does site the book: The Real Barenziah IX

TL;DR: Barenziah had a bastard child with the first nightingale who eventually had Karliah, making Karliah the only known heir of Barenziah.

Does anybody else just brutally murder every snob they see

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:09 AM PDT

I just found a noble being accompanied by a thalmor bootlicking guard, I killed the guard, murdered the noble, put the noble in the most undignified way I could and stole his clothes. I also did almost the same to Nazeem except without the guard. I was just wondering whether anyone else does the same

First playthrough and Nazeem fell outta the sky after I left Breezehome. Couldn't stop laughing but then I realised he had more important loot than normal.

Does he appear in a quest line?
