RuneScape Silly Question Sunday - 10 June

Silly Question Sunday - 10 June

Posted: 09 Jun 2018 05:13 PM PDT

Silly Question Sunday is a weekly thread in which you can ask your RuneScape-related silly questions:

  • "Newb" questions from new players
  • Questions from returning players
  • Silly or nonsensical questions
  • Questions you feel stupid asking elsewhere

Of course, a question thread wouldn't make much sense without answers, so please help out with any answers that you have!

Could you answer a few questions about Loot Boxes?

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:28 AM PDT

Hi there,

My name is Dr David Zendle, and I'm a Lecturer from York in the UK.

My research deals with how games affect their players - you might be familiar with some of my recent work which deals with a lack of evidence for violent games causing violent behaviour ( https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/7s6a9z/no_evidence_to_support_link_between_violent_video/ )

Another issue I'm interested in is loot boxes (or gacha): Who buys them; why we buy them; and if there is any relationship between buying them and gambling. I'd like to ask you about these things via a quick survey I've put together: https://york.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8hOEkbwpWVsdpBz

If you would help me out by answering the questions in this survey, I would really appreciate it – and it would help us get to the heart of this important issue. You can answer the survey regardless of whether you have bought loot boxes in the past, or not.

Thank you again for taking the time to read this message!

David Zendle

Can the cooking daily challenge involving summer pies be changed to sailfish?

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 05:06 AM PDT

Raw summer pies cost 6k each on the GE. When you have to do over 300 of them, that's really bad. Since you get compensated from the base (raw) materials, it's not worth it at all. Most other daily challenges that I know of compensates you fairly, and there's an actual incentive to doing those. I found this thread from 2 years back asking for the same thing, but now we have something viable to swap them with, sailfish.

Found this on my hard drive the other day, the day I found a Zanaris Choir by the GE. Guess they were on a field trip from Zanaris. File says edited Aug 2010 :D

Solak’s gp/hr should be buffed

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:46 AM PDT

The mods have already declared that Telos will 100% be more gp/hr than Solak, however, this may not be a popular opinion but, Solak should at least be equal, if not more gp/hr than AoD. The casual AoD teams get around 20-30m/hr. With a P wand standing at 1b as of today's posting prices. It has literally not even been 2 weeks and the Crossbows are cheaper than the Praesul wand already, sure you may argue that the crossbows aren't as rare as the wands, but don't forget the codices that drop along side that as well.

An average kill at AoD is about 500k, while Solak is about 1mil speaking generously. Kill times for solak literally take 3-5x longer (depending on team size and whether duo) and require easily 3-4x the effort and coordination from your partner(s).

It's honestly sad to see that Solak, a greatly designed boss (for the most part) for the high level PvM community is not as rewarding, despite the effort to kill it. Jagex mods usually emphasise on the fact that more effort should be rewarded with better results, so it would be nice to see the mods do something about this.

Range (both dualwield and 2h) needs to either be buffed or be reworked in some form.

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 04:22 AM PDT

Evidently the new blightbound crossbows are already starting to crash rapidly. Pretty soon the set will be less than what praesuls currently are (I predict under 1b for a set). Seren godbow is in a similar situation, having crashed to Zaros Godsword price for quite some time now.

This is because range in today's high level PvM serves little purpose.

You have melee which can do high burst DPS with zerk/zgs as well as mobility through abilities like bladed dive, and there's also stuff like AoEs and affinity debuffs that give it identity. It is generally higher risk to use melee though, but when it can be used, its DPS is insane.

You have mage which has debuffs, affinity, 3 spellbooks, and 4-tick autoattack. Its ability book is also arguably the most versatile of the three. Mage nowadays can fulfill just about any role at any boss, and its potential damage, while not as great as melee, is still very high.

And then there's range. Right now, the only places where you would use range are where both melee and mage are unviable to use, or where mechanical chinchompa AoE can be utilized to max effectiveness. Or, in very niche scenarios, the 9 square range of specific weapons (which mage does not have).

This pretty much leaves:

  • Nex (prays mage in most phases and melee in the final phase - minions are also immune to magic)

  • Rise of the Six (mech chins are too good)

  • Queen Black Dragon (9 square range makes tagging artifacts less of a pain, and also the physical damage increase form)

  • Angel of Death (even then, only one ranger, and that is because of chinning minions)

  • Shattered Worlds pushing (on high worlds you really want the 9 square range to kite monsters)

  • Legiones (for the obvious reason that both melee and magic are very unviable)

  • Dagannoth Prime (same)

  • Kalphite King magic phase (its ranged defense is extremely low while the other two are very high only on this form)

  • Rune Dragons (dragonbane is required to break its armor, which can only be done with range)

  • Dungeoneering (Desperado is the only ring that directly increases damage in a dungeon, and since you can combo with Sniper for accuracy increase, range is best for dg)

In basically every other PvM scenario, if you're ranging, you could achieve better results by either meleeing or maging instead. Range just doesn't feel like it has a useful place in its current state. Bakriminel bolts helped alleviate the issue somewhat, but even then it only addressed one part of range, and the buffs still do not make it match up to what the other two styles already can do.

Hell, even the AoE aspect of mech chins' usefulness can be debated in most other places. A noxious scythe fulfills the AoE niche better for slayer in general. Chins don't even work with bak bolts either!

In short, range just feels underwhelming, and the only reason it has uses in certain places is due to melee and magic being unviable at said places.

Make their affinity values the same across all styles. Them having a higher mage affinity value is frankly stupid and pointless.

Make strange and golden rocks automatically go to the collection bag in bank

Expert skillcape shards do this with their bag (as long as it's in the bank), would be so much nicer if strange and golden rocks did so as well.

Add default skilling animations to animation customization

Posted: 10 Jun 2018 03:35 AM PDT

Once you activate any skilling animation overrides, you can't see the regular animation anymore without deactivating them. If you have multiple animations for the same skill activated, it cycles between them, so it would be nice to be able to include the default animation in that cycle.

The default ones would have to be force enabled unless another animation for that skill is activated, then the default could be deactivated.
