Now that armor was taken away from the warriors, my job as a bartender has gotten harder.

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 10:36 AM PDT

I get that maybe armor made for a bit of a strange gameplay element, and that removing it made a lot of sense in certain ways. But when it was originally implemented, it was noted that it makes sense in context of reducing Supports' healing output (here), which they need in the Grand Support Nerf Patch.

The thing is, now I feel like if I throw a healing potion into my Taunt-Varian's face, it barely registers (as opposed to throwing one to Lunara, she always appreciates). And these things aren't cheap! This is made-to-order stuff with top-shelf ingredients, I don't buy these by the hundred at Costco!

Some tanks had an Amplified Healing talent before the armor patch for just this reason. I'm thinking, maybe they should get it back (or a reduced version baseline), so I don't have to throw Stitches 3 potions for every 1 I throw Jaina?

What's going on with Tempo Storm?

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 01:23 PM PDT

HGC resumes in three days, Tempo Storm plays in five days, yet no word on who's replacing Psalm? Is it possible that they don't have a replacement just yet? This seems like a dire situation...

I really like Tempo Storm, and Psalm is a great player. Could he not have waited until after Blizzcon to make the switch? I may not have a full grasp of the situation, but as a casual gamer and somewhat serious follower of HGC, it seems like he really put TS in a serious bind here...

What’s going on with Rehgar?

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 02:32 AM PDT

I'll preface this by saying I am in no ways an expert at Rehgar; but I do like to think I understand the hero to a basic enough degree. When I've played him in the past, I've generally performed decently, winning and losing in a somewhat equal measure.

However, as of late, Rehgar just feels terrible to play for me. I can't win games no matter the mode, map, or team comps. I feel like almost any other "main" healer can just do more than him. I'm not healing at the rate of a decent Lili, Stukov, or Malf. I'm not providing the damage numbers in team fights of a good Malfurion or Kharazhim, and my slightly above average waveclear for a support doesn't feel like much of a reward for that trade off. Earthbind Totem is certainly a strong utility tool, for both peeling and securing kills, but considering the long cooldown and Rehgar's somewhat strict style of play if you want to avoid mana problems, it feels like I can't utilize it anywhere near as much as Stukov or Malf can make use of their E's. I get that Stukov and Malf are somewhat OP in terms of supports, but even other weaker support characters, like Uther or Auriel, feel generally more impactful than Rehgar does in terms of utility in team fights. Without a doubt though, the worse aspect of Rehgar to me right now is how paper thin he feels. I don't even think letting him self cast ancestral would help completely solve this. A decent amount of the time it feels like I can just not go in on a target; which for a character whose trait and kit as a whole seem to encourage "go in on a target alongside dive heroes" feels terrible. With or without a good tank, it just feels like I get blown up super quickly. Rehgar's self healing feels mediocre compared to other supports, and his aforementioned long cooldowns and mana problems (depending on talents/playstyles/etc.) make it feel like a waste to use your abilities to heal yourself at all. It feels like any other hero in the game can just completely decimate my health bar and I can't do jackshit about it half the time. And this isn't even touching on his glaring talent tree issues or godawful second heroic. It just feels like most aspects of Rehgar feel mediocre at best, and the rest feel straight up awful. His incredibly useful E seems to be the only part of his kit that provides consistent value and feels good to use, but even that is bogged down by a number of his other issues.

This is a really long winded post where I mainly wanted to vent about my frustrations with trying to play Rehgar right now, but I do ultimately want to pose the question: is Rehgar legitimately just in a bad spot as of now? I'm fully willing to admit that I might just be terrible at him, but it feels worse than that to me. How does the community at large feel about Rehgar? Is he good, bad, extremely niche? Is he being pushed out of the meta by the vastly more powerful options in the support role right now? Did the supportocalypse hit him too hard, or is he ultimately a fine hero that's waiting for a chance to break back into the meta? I'd like to hear people's thoughts, because I really just don't understand Rehgar's current place in the game.

tl;dr: Rehgar feels bad to me right now because of how little he provides and how easy he feels to kill. Am I just bad with him, or does the hero need serious changes?

EDIT: This got a bit more popular than I expected so I'll say some things really quick here as a response; the core point of this post was to question Rehgar's current place in the game, and how he compares to other healers, not to definitively say that he's a shitty hero who needs massive buffs. Comparing him so frequently to Malf and Stukov might've been a slight mistake, because practically every support feels "bad" when put up against those two right now. But even among "the non-tier 1" supports like Brightwing, Lili, Uther, or others, he feels like he has very little niche outside of Ancestral. Even though those supports aren't the first options one would go with, I still feel like I'm being helpful when I draft them. I don't play supports as much as I used to, but when I do, Rehgar is the one I'm struggling with the most. I think that the support role as a whole is really struggling outside of Stukov and Malf, so the point of this post was more to see how Rehgar stacks up to the other healers who aren't those two.

Talent tree versatility should be a major focus for this game

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 04:27 AM PDT

After playing HOTS for three years, I tried out League of Legends for a change of air. The one thing that immediately enraptured me was the versatility that comes from the items. You went into a game as a support but your team's carry is playing badly? Build damage. You have 0 tanks? Build tanky items. What we have in HOTS for Varian as a unique feature is available to ALL heroes in League of Legends thanks to item builds.

HOTS game design argues that it's easier to balance each hero individually and thus they replaced items with talent trees to provide the same versatility but with easier changeability. However, in practice this "changeability" is not being truly utilised. What we see is that for about 70% of the hero pool, there is one talent build that is just superior to the other choices. While certain talent choices have "niches" when they are supposed to be better, the difference they provide is minuscule (e.g. bit more waveclear vs bit more pvp, bit more tankiness vs bit more selfhealing, bit more damage in ability1 vs bit more damage in ability2). Just in comparison, in LOL as an ADC (~Valla equivalent) you can choose between an item that increases your maxhp by 50% (Warmogs) or an item and doubles your damage (Infinity Edge). And this is just one item slot out of your 6! In HOTS the only thing that comes even close to such a decision is Varian's lvl4 choice and that is looked as something so unique that it puts Varian into his own role! (Multiclass)

And then there are the heroes where most of the talents have little to no impact in them, like Lucio or Greymane. Arguing that they have their power in their base kit is in my opinion a bad balance choice as it removes the fun factor that comes from choosing powerful items/talents as you reach certain points of the game, which is arguably one of MOBAs' primary attractive/addictive trait. Alternatively, if we really want such hero designs (as in, more power in base-kit), then the talents could be made still impactful without overpowering the hero by giving weaknesses at the same time as strength (e.g. gain 30% damage but lose 20% hp, instead of just gain 10% damage).

Overall, I feel like there should be a lot more focus put into making diverse talent trees with powerful and significant decisions put into each tier for all heroes, as this could be the main selling point of Heroes of the Storm among the various other item-based MOBAs.

I'm not writing this because I think LOL is better or anything. I'm writing this because I absolutely love Heroes of the Storm and I can see it becoming so much more than what it is now if there is more focus put into the existing hero pool and game mechanics instead of just releasing more and more content on top of a base of unrealised potential. The statement that Blizzard gave about slowing down new hero releases in favour of reworks is probably a good step in the right direction, but I feel we could go a lot more beyond that to improve the core of the game.

TL.DR: Talent choices are the heart of this game. Significantly improving them would significantly improve the game as a whole.

Endorsements in HotS

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 06:23 PM PDT

I have played with the idea of writing a huge post about toxicity and my own experience of being silenced, being slightly toxic at times myself, and the problem with toxicity as a word used for behavior and other things of that nature. But the biggest point I wanted to make about it is how we punish players and the fact that there are no ways to endorse players for actually being a good teammate or shotcaller etc; that is where i really connect with what overwatch is doing currently. Endorsements help you notice when a player is actually doing the right things and being a positive force on your team. I think this would also help with "toxicity" depending on how they go about it. I want to point out that matching toxic players with other toxic players does not help the situation any and makes that whole lot of players even more toxic first off. Like it or not, that is a simple fact and you are asking for more trouble if you do that. I feel like if you would match them with people who have been voted very positive, it would help them learn from their own mistakes a bit more. A person who keeps their cool and knows to stay quiet or how to talk a person down for tilting goes a long way if you ask me. Regardless of that situation, I really think being able to endorse/upvote players for positive actions is something needed in HotS badly!

HGC Phase II: Open Strikes Back

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 09:10 AM PDT

The HGC Open Division is Back!

Last season in EU we saw Worst Positioning rise through the playoffs to win the Open against Granit Gaming, while in NA King's Gambit made a dominant and unpredicted run through the playoffs, taking out favorites XD to claim first place. All 4 teams went into the Crucible, but sadly, none emerged victorious, though multiple close games (and even sets) were had.

Success was found for multiple Open players, however. Meinkraft and RaidBawZ were both picked up by Diamond Skin (now Granit Gaming) in EU, and Droplets was picked up for LFM Esports in NA. Jin also saw success mid-season, after being picked up by No Tomorrow to fill an empty spot in their NA roster.

This season will undoubtedly see the return of many familiar names, perhaps in the same rosters, perhaps in different ones. New names will also rise, as the Open is not an exclusive club; anyone can sign up and compete!

When to Watch & Play

Over the next few months teams will battle to pull ahead of the pack and win favorable placing in the playoffs, bettering their chance at making it into the HGC. Weekly games will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, cast by Grubby and Tetcher in EU and by SolidJake and Kala in NA!

The first cup of the Open Division begins Monday July 2, and will be streamed live on the official Heroes of the Storm Twitch channel as well as various other channels that will be announced closer to the date.

Signups

Signups are up for all competitors for the Open! Anyone 5 man squad can sign up to compete in the EU and NA Open. Signups can be found here for EU and here for NA.

Having trouble putting together a squad? Be sure to check out the HeroesHype Discord and check out the free agent chats to find the players that will complete your dream team!

HOTS Addiction?

Posted: 26 Jun 2018 10:23 AM PDT

Hey guys, I think I might be addicted to this game. I always fantasize about playing it and when I play, I get to long hour binge sessions. As for my age, I am currently 18 years old, about to start college. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you could show how your daily schedule looks like, I would also be very happy.

But hey this is a completely irrelevant post for this subreddit. So I'll be fine if this goes unnoticed. Thank you guys and keep the good games!
