Guild Wars 2 - BRAVO to the cinematics team

BRAVO to the cinematics team

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:28 AM PDT

Over the years I feel like we have really seen the progression of this game's cinematics team and storytelling style. The conversational cutscenes at launch were interesting but had a lot of limitations, and it was clear from any cutscenes done within the engine that this system was hardly fleshed out. Dodgy camera movements and very little in the way of quality animation or sound design within cutscenes.

Over the years these have improved massively. The illustrated cutscenes have always been fantastic but it's high quality in-engine cutscenes that make me feel fully immersed in the game and what is going on around me. The final cutscene in Episode 3 of Season 4 was no doubt quite intensive to make. It was long and filled to the brim with dialogue and action. But the execution was above and beyond the best cinematic output we have ever seen from this game. The whole thing was stunning, from Joko's animation through to the sound design, camera movements, and framing.

I'm a bit of a lore nerd, and this franchises storytelling is what has got me into and kept me with the game since Factions launched. If this is the future of arena net's cinematic systems, I am so excited for the potential.

"Is that it?" The most common question I see with this patch. [SPOILERS]

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:01 AM PDT

Here's what the patch added:

  • New story missions that take about 2 to 3 hours. A little more with achievements. For what it's worth, I thought it was the best story in Guild Wars 2 yet.

  • A map that's really fun to explore the first time, but the meta and other events give little loot so it's not really worth doing beyond one-time achievements. Also, the meta itself is extremely underwhelming.

  • A new fractal that takes about 15 to 20 minutes to beat. But it has no challenge mode, so the average person will maybe see it once a week at most.

  • A new mount. By far the best part for me, with the biggest implications for gameplay in the long term.

  • A new legendary warhorn. I like it, but I'm not going for it because I almost never use warhorns. I imagine a lot of people are in a similar position.

The consistent problem here, for me, is that after I did all this content once — in about 4 or 5 hours of actual gameplay at most — I was left with a feeling of "is that it?" My friends have voiced the same concern: What is there for me to do in the long term?

It would be one thing if people really did just log on every few months for the patch and enjoy myself. But I see fewer and fewer people come back with each patch. I think the problem is people don't play MMOs to just log on every once in a while — they want to commit to something long term. But every patch seems to show that Guild Wars 2 isn't really doing that.

From another perspective, I am a bit confused about the point of adding these big, intricate maps that I'm sure take a lot of development time if there's almost no incentive to go back to them in the long run. I am not a game developer, but from my uninformed perspective this doesn't seem good for their time either.

[Request] Update the Gandara meta event

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:49 PM PDT

Hi there.

As many people have said, the "Containing the Scarab Plague" meta event in the new map is really disappointing. The first events seem fine, delivering spare parts and then reprogramming the cannons. After that, the events are terrible. Foes don't give any loot nor experience and capturing the points is really easy.

But the most important part: why are we just attacking from one side? There are three bridges. Why aren't we using them?

Also, the final boss is really disappointing. An asura that jumps into a golem suit? That's it? That's the final boss of Gandara?

ANet doesn't tend to update older content, but PLEASE, I'd love to see a better version of this meta event. Maybe the current events team could update it? Gandara deserves more love.

Rolling Beetle and Endurance

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:03 AM PDT

So when you mount up on a bettle you start with 0 Endurance, unlike every other mount that starts with full.

For me, this feels very off and unrewarding. When you are only going a somewhat small distance I now have to guess: "Will the beetle be faster with a roll after the long endurance fill wait or should I just go raptor?". Couldn't it atleast....start with 50% endurance? Anyone else feel similar? Is there a consequence with beetle starting with full endurance that i'm just not seeing?

Everything I know about FTT (Field Tech Turret)

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:44 PM PDT

EDIT: My Spare Part route is in the comments.

Getting Started

If you managed to get into Kourna, you may have noticed that there are quite a few Inquest Turrets all over. Interacting with them gives you the option to activate them and if necessary you can also spend Spare Parts to repair them. They are unexciting as far as turrets go and Krewe Leader Drazz agrees with you. Talking to him will unlock a collection so you can steal Blueprints from Awakened Inquest with better turret designs. Alternatively, you can unlock the achievement by using Skill 5 on an Inquest Turret in the story step Forearmed is Forewarned.

Blueprints

Now that the collection is unlocked it is time to gather the Blueprints. Blueprints drop from non-story/non-event related Awakened Inquest. They can mainly be found at Pogahn Bluffs Proving Ground. There are 7 Blueprints and each Blueprint needs 4 scraps before Drazz can understand it. The Blueprints themselves are rare drops, so having a little magic find doesn't hurt.

Getting your Turret

After acquiring 4 scraps of a Blueprint (I suggest gathering all 28 scraps before proceeding) talking to Drazz will give you the option to augment your turret to that specific task. Drazz will also give you 1 free Turret Deployment Kit. You can buy more for 1 Inscribed Shard, 5 Spare Parts, and 50 Volatile Magic. Using the Kit creates a turret in front of you. Placing down another Kit destroys all other turrets you own. This turret does nothing at first, you need to give it a task.

Spare Parts

Before I go into all the unique turrets and upgrades, it is important to note how important Spare Parts are. 1, 2, or 100 Spare Parts are dropped by Awakened Inquest. So by getting the Blueprints, you should have quite a few. You can also get up to 7 Spare Parts by using skill 5 on Inquest Turrets in the Story Step Forearmed is Forewarned. With Spare Parts you can repair ANY turret. This means that you can repair your turret, turrets from other players, and inactive FTT turrets in Kourna. 5 Spare Parts repair for 10% and 10 Spare Parts repair for 25%. Note that you can spam the options and potentially lose all your Spare Parts, use with care. Why repair? Turrets lose health over time, repairing them keeps them around longer. Spare Parts are also used to upgrade turrets if you've unlocked the option.

How to train your Turret

Now that you have stocked up on Spare Parts and placed your turret you can configure it's function. There are 7 different functions. After choosing one, you can configure another for it on the same turret. The achievements require you to configure to the setting, meaning you can cycle through all 7 or bounce between 2 untill you get the bouncy box with the level 2 blueprint. Be sure to repair your turret or you will have to get a new Kit from Drazz. Once you complete the achievement and opened the box you immediatly learn the upgraded blueprint. To use it, configure your level 1 turret and interact with it again. Now you will have the option to upgrade it. Upgrading to level 2 costs 5 Spare Parts and the upgrade is lost if you configure to another function.

Upgrading your achievements

To learn the level 2 blueprint, you need to have configured the level 1 function on a turret 10 times. To learn the level 3 blueprint, you need to have configured the level 1 function on a turret and upgraded it with 5 Spare Parts 8 times. For the final level 4 blue print you need to configure the level 1 function, upgrade it with 5 Spare Parts to level 2, and then upgrade it to level 3 with 10 Spare Parts 6 times. If you play it wisely you don't have to upgrade from 1 to 2 the very first time, saving you 35 Spare Parts This means you need atleast 875 Spare Parts for the full FTT collection.

Expect to need much more Spare Parts due to misclicks, imperfect upgrade strategy, and having to repair your turret.

The entire FTT Achievement can be done with your one free Turret Kit if you have enough Spare Parts, time, and all 7 blueprints from the start.

But what does each turret do?

Function Effect Level 1 Level 2 (5 SP) Level 3 (10 SP) Level 4 (20 SP)
1. Direct Damage Shoots piercing bolts that deal 635 damage. They can crit 1 bolt 2 bolts 3 bolts 4 bolts
2. Area Damage Shoots a damaging field that lasts 5 seconds 317 damage and 180 radius 317 damage and 240 radius 476 damage and 360 radius 635 damage and 360 radius
3. Healing Aura Heals per second in an area around the turret 200 heal with a 200 radius 300 heal with a 200 radius 300 heal with a 400 radius 400 heal with a 400 radius
4. Shield Bubble Absorbs damage in a 1000 radius 5% damage reduction 10% damage reduction 15% damage reduction 20% damage reduction that lasts for 10 seconds after leaving the field
5. Boon Wave Gives Boons every 5 seconds in a 1000 radius 1 Might for 10 seconds adds Fury for 3 seconds adds 1 Might for 10 seconds adds Alacrity for 1.5 seconds
6. Speed Wall Gives Superspeed 1 wall 10 seconds 2 walls in a cross with 10 seconds of Superspeed 2 walls with 20 seconds of Superspeed 2 walls with 20 seconds of Superspeed and Endurance Regeneration
7. GTFO New skill on a 60 second cooldown that brings you back to the turret 30 seconds before skill loss 60 seconds before skill loss 60 seconds before skill loss 120 seconds before skill loss

GTFO level 3 seems to not work properly or it has a change that is not very obvious.

Some last notes

The turret can only be used in Kourna. Altough the level 4 upgrades are very potent, there isn't any reason to use them (yet). Besides the cost and the time it takes to upgrade, you have to consider that the turrets don't move with you. Take the meta: Place your turret, upgrade it for 35 Spare Parts and abandon it shortly after.

When you upgrade a turret you repair it to around 50% of its health. This way you can save your Spare Parts for upgrading and not on repairing. This is useful if you plan to grind all the upgrades, saving you Spare Parts in the long run.

Turrets lose health depending on their level: 200 on level 1, 170 on level 2, 140 on level 3, and 110 on level 4. The level 4 turrets are surprisingly durable.

Hope this helped someone and that that someone will find a great use for 1 or more of the augmentations of the turret.

PSA: Improve your drifting/general mount experience today

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:59 AM PDT

A lot of you already know about this, but there's still a lot who don't.

First, go into Options, scroll all the way down, and check "Disable Conditional Mount Movement Ability Input".
Now, go into your keybindings and find the section for mounts. You can now set movement ability 1 and 2.

1 is for your travel power, like the Springer jump or Jackal portal. It will now be separate from spacebar, allowing you to jump normally on a Raptor for example. 2 is for Beetle drifting, and for Griffon altitude regaining.

Enjoy!

Do you feel we get only one third of the new meta?

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:35 AM PDT

The new meta is stange, we have 3 pre events, 3 bridge but only one location once the first pre events are done. It looks like they removed 2 lines of the meta and maybe a final step with a boss? The feel and look is so like silverwaste final part of the meta but it feels so sad and empty.

Mount Racing: The future of GW2

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:53 PM PDT

At the moment, we have really well made and designed mounts in the game. They're really fun and they're really good for the game, because the skins help with sales, and they're also just a nice thing for us to get, in a game based mostly on cosmetics.

It feels like, we have very high quality ingredients, but we can't utilize them properly. We already have mount races, but to me, they feel like an experiment, a lightweight teaser of something to come.

I'm talking about an entirely new game mode. PvE, WvW, PvP, and Mount Racing. Imagine a sort of Fractals area where you can choose from many different tracks, themed around mounts. Flying courses for griffon races, aquatic courses for skimmers, etc. You can set up your own matches or do ranked like in PvP (there could be ranks!). There is a lot of skill involved in mount racing, mechanically, and it deserves it's own fully fleshed out game mode imo. There is so so much you could do with it, and it would only further improve gem store sales, maybe even tempting more people to buy premium skins.

Can we get skate ramps for our guild halls now?

I mean come on, Anet. You paved the way for those. We need them. At a decent crafting price.

Just imagine being able to put ramps and tunnels in your guild halls for some frantic beetle racing. Think of all the eurobeat.
