People are forgetting that there is hunting, farming and cooking in this game

Posted: 12 Jun 2018 01:20 AM PDT

Obviously the rate of food and water you need to consume now is too high. In the same time, yes the food you find is way too much.

Shouldnt a can of food each ~2 hours or so be enough?

Shouldnt a bottle of water each ~1,5 or so be enough?

BUT, people who complain about too less food are forgetting a few things:

  1. its meant to be a hardcore survival game

  2. Your main goal should be to survive, so finding food should be quite a bit of a hassle (not in the meaning to eat/drink all 10 minutes!)

  3. !! This game has awesome hunting/fishing, farming, cooking technique in it! Admittingly, for now in the stresstest, its not fully in. But in my opinion finding canned food should be the exception. You should need to hunt and farm your food to survive, not just run from house to house and find cans everywhere.

You should be happy, relieved and proud if you manage to hunt a deer or your tomatos are growing.

For now you find so much food, people dont even think of hunting, farming and making a campfire to cook.

Feature ideas I've been thinking about

Posted: 12 Jun 2018 02:27 AM PDT

I've been playing this game since like 2012, and it is very dear to my heart, so of course I have some thoughts for features I would like to see, or at least get YOUR thoughts upon. If they would be good features or not, why they wouldn't be etc. So instead of making several posts, I thought I would just throw them all in here. Sorry if this is the wrong place to do so, as I couldn't find the linked "Workbench Thread". But lets start with the first big one:

  • 1: Zombie Economy for DayZ (I know it is a thing but read on) A heatmap for zombies, which dynamically changes how many zombies spawn at certain locations, affected by different factors. Maybe like noise, gunshots or player activity in general. Which means that areas where a lot of gunfire happens, in general will tend to spawn more zombies (a dynamic way to make it feel like more and more zombies are attracted by the noise) To minimize abusing such a system, different parts of the map would have scalar factors. So that areas where zombies don't spawn much anyway, would need a loooot of noise to even spawn a few. Or even a hard cap on how many if any at all could spawn. Where larger cities would be much more prone to escallating zombie spawning, with less noise spawning a lot more zombies, with a much higher "roof" value. Maybe even the mere presence of players would amplify this value, so that the map dynamically adapts to player hot spots. Maybe it could work as a tileset, or grid. Where increasing the zombievalue in one "chunk", decreases them in adjacent ones, making it possible to "draw" zombies out of the cities, without actually having to see the zombies actually move. Of course this would work in the background, and not something people would "actively" see.

  • 2: Cassettes and Cassette-players, which uses 9 volt batteries. A way to find and play music, for some atmosphere, and collect-ability, just like the books. I just had a session where I ran around with the spotify "fallout" playlist running in the background and it was an awesome experience. (Wait, didn't I already see models of this years ago?)

  • 3: Whistling, to attract player or zombie attention over larger distances. So a way to communicate like the "F" commands. Maybe even a whistle as an item you could find.

  • 4: A chance for cans of food actually opening, if you throw them against a hard object or just the ground. It would of course spill most of it, but it could be a last resort if you where dying of hunger. I know that if I was dying of hunger, I would do anything to open that can, even if it meant clawing my hands and teeth to blood.

  • 5: When body temperature is added again in 0.63, being able to cool down by pouring water on yourself with a bottle, would be a small nice feature. Right now you can wash your hands with one, so by not this. Would be a lot easier, than having to strip down in a lake or stream somewhere.

  • 6: Cutting up and eating infected, producing infected meat, which would of course leave you deadly sick. I see some weird scenarios where you feed infected meat to a prisoner of yours.

  • 7: And a small one to end the note with. Being able to eat and roast meat over a bonfire, without having to actively hold down the mouse bottom. Cooking a whole cow, is tiring for my fingers :D

I'd love to hear your thoughts on these. Which would work, which wouldn't, what you would add to them, or what you would remove from them, anything goes!

See you in Cherno! <3

WOLFGEIST's 4 Tier Solution to Stamina/Hunger Issues.

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 03:35 PM PDT

After much reading and engaging with other members of the community as well as proposing and receiving feedback on ideas regarding stamina, hunger, food scarcity, and so forth I propose the following 4 tiered solution to the stamina/hunger/food scarcity complaints. I have taken ideas from others including those that I constantly argue with (and probably hate me). Anyways here it is:

  1. Make food more satiating, but more rare. So, make a can of beans give you maybe triple the amount of nourishment it currently gives you but also make it 2.5x harder to find food. Why not a 1:1 change? Because with rarer food you run into the risk of getting unlucky by not finding any food. This would make eating less tedious but would make food more precious/valuable and exciting to find. Also consider making processed foods less nourishing than whole foods to encourage hunting (great idea from /u/bc_hawke )

  2. Increase the players drinking rate at ponds/wells. Currently it takes about 100 sips to fill up at a pond. This rate could be doubled or tripled. I know there is work in progress on allowing players to hold F to continually drink which will help. I think there should be some time for players to remain vulnerable while drinking but I think it's currently a bit too long/tedious.

  3. Inspired by /u/Sandwich247 - Put a cap on health loss from hunger/thirst so that you don't die so suddenly but severely limit mobility while dying of starvation/dehydration. So, once you get to say 25% health loss, slow the ticker down drastically. Give the player time to search (another hour?) but in a severely compromised state. If players are near you could lie down and wait it out and then continue your agonizing search for food when trouble is clear. This would make for compelling, grueling survival gameplay and give more opportunities for player interaction. Currently the time between becoming starving/severely dehydrated and death is too short, leaving little time for interesting interactions.

  4. Implement a reserve stamina bar/"glycogen" bar. Basically it would be as big as your normal stamina but starts empty and slowly fills as you eat nutritious foods. Resting near a camp fire would increase it's rate of growth as well. So the best way to fill it up and become properly rested would be to get some high quality food such as venison and cook and eat a meal over a campfire. You would activate it by completely depleting your normal stamina bar and would be used in times of great urgency. This could be used as a soft way to emulate adrenaline without getting into messy gameplay mechanics, and also serves as a "well rested" bonus. In addition, it provides players with incentive to hunt game and interact/socialize at camp fires. Camp fires could then have an additional in game benefit besides being a source for cooking & warmth.

Other ideas that I potentially like:

  • Allow us to sprint beyond our stamina bar at a severe cost. If we deplete both of our stamina bars we can continue sprinting while taking x shock damage every second, as well as rapidly depleting hydration levels. Push yourself too hard and expect to collapse. (inspired by /u/Lrishjake and /u/lucky_dog_ )

  • Increase jogging speed while at full stamina to make jogging more efficient/faster for long distance travel. This would eliminate the "need" to toggle sprint on and off every so often.

What are your thoughts? Which of these do you like/dislike, and most importantly why? What are your ideas regarding these issues?

Does Health/Food/Water effect Stamina?

I feel as if it should, you wouldn't be able to sprint a ton if you're dehydrated or injured.

Adding some backstory

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 11:29 AM PDT

11 months ago I posted this regarding stamina..

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 11:17 AM PDT

Original Post:

"I do not want some silly mechanic that forces your player to stop for a set amount of time, based on a set amount of time running.. that is the most ridiculous way of adding in stamina to video games and it is all that we have ever seen basically. The same old, run for X amount of time and be forced to rest for X amount of time, is boring, out done, and has never been remotely realistic.

When you are being chased by zombies or a pack of wolves, you will run for your life as if it depended on it. You would not stop because you were winded.. you would only stop when you simply could no longer run or when you felt safe; eventually if you ignore your body, your body shuts down and essentially you pass out, or become incapacitated in the least.

What I want to see DayZ do, is something very similar. Run if you need to, but visual and audible queues begin to tell you to rest your player. If you decide to ignore them, you will eventually lose health (and then 'blood'). Which will eventually cause your player to pass out. Most likely, in a very bad way and in a very bad place. The amount of "time" you can run will be completely dependent on how much health and blood you had to begin with, and how much you carry on your person (see: planned weight system). Stopping for quick breaks will allow you to run for longer distances, but never stopping at all will put you at a huge risk for losing health to the point of unconsciousness. You will literally see your hydration, health, and food meters drop to empty while running, then the screen loses color, then you pass out - with this idea. So keep running, sure.. but you're gonna die soon if you do.

And on that point, once we get there, of course weight would play a huge part in all of this.. do you really want to live? Drop your shit, to weigh less, so you can run both faster and for longer. Or care more about your gear, and perhaps lose it all, including your life, because of it. It will allow players to make a choice, and several choices from it perhaps, rather then be forced to constantly take breaks to "catch their breath".

What do you all think? This seems to be a popular topic today, and we all know BIS has already talked and discussed this to great lengths at this point. But perhaps there is still time for the topic to be open enough to affect our game we play? How would you like to see stamina replicated in dayz, like other games have done it in the past, or maybe something totally new.. something maybe only YOU have thought of?

Discuss your ideas. :) "

So, here we are today.. what do you all think so far of what we have?

Suppressed gun shots still attracting zombies?

Posted: 12 Jun 2018 05:42 AM PDT

There is no difference between shooting a loud gun and one with a can, youd think at least suppressed pistols wouldn't attract zombies,or atleast add subsonic ammo. (0.63)

are you able to revert to the stable dayZ build without re downloading files again.

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 10:06 PM PDT

I downloaded the files for the stress test last night only to find that it had ended. Sadly I live in an area where I can't just download big files willy-nilly. So I'm hoping that someone knows how I can revert back to the stable branch without downloading all over again like it's making me do.

Dayz Not Working Plz Help

Posted: 12 Jun 2018 12:38 AM PDT

Every time that I start Dayz everything is super laggy, like even on the menus when I am trying to choose a server. I put my mouse on something then it takes 3 seconds to register. Wondering if anyone knows a fix for this. My computer normally runs Dayz on high with no problems, but I dont know if it is a frame rate issue or what. I am not good with computers so hoping for a fix so I can be ready for the next stress test. I already uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, restarted my computer, changed graphic settings, etc.

Is dayz worth buying and if so will my pc be able to run it at a solid frame rate?

Posted: 12 Jun 2018 03:13 AM PDT

I have a gtx 960, i5 6500 and 8gb of ram. I've seen many YouTube videos of the game and wouldn't mind making my own if my pc was able to run it at a solid frame rate :)

How do I get off this island?

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 09:09 PM PDT

So this is my second game of Dayz since 2013, tenth game ever (PC was too rubbish to play in 13') and I spawned here: https://imgur.com/a/nALK6Gv. I have looked on the map and I think it is Skalisty Island. Is there any possible way to get off this island without dying of a cold? Got some pretty good gear so I certainly don't want to die.

new to dayz and pc gaming

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 01:41 PM PDT

hello all, tomorrow is the day. the day i boot up my very own pc build. something i have waited years for. i have always wanted to get into it but due to lack of funds/ knowledge ive strayed away. now the day is here. well tomorrow... dayz was partially the reason for this obsession. i absolutely cannot wait to fire the game up for the first time, now enough rambling. is there anybody that cares to accompany me on my journey? i have very little pc gaming knowledge and thus the controls and gameplay will be alll new to me but i want to get the most out of my experience, thank you to anybody in advance and have a great day

Animal behavior improvements?

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 04:44 PM PDT

I first got into dayz expecting some kind of hunting survival element but got really dissapointed. Only place i found deer was in big towns and they had a really ugly animations and got stung in buildings. I have never seen a boar in the game except some clip on youtube. Has there been any improvement in the 0.63?

Stamina

Posted: 11 Jun 2018 12:43 PM PDT

Dont know if anyones suggested this already but, how about adrenaline?

If you get shot at (Hear a bullet crack or actually hit), the player can exhaust their stamina bar but keep sprinting for double or maybe triple their actual stamina limit. Not sure of the actual "adrenaline" limit but it doesnt really matter.

Once you're using your "adrenaline" sprint, you get closer and closer to passing out based on weight, blood, shock damage/general health of the character. You could have the edges of the screen close into the middle, tunnel vision style before passing out.

It would need to cause some form of semi-permanant damage to stop people exploiting it by shooting next to a friends head whilst travelling somewhere (shock damage maybe?)

Makes the game a little more realistic, if someones shooting at you you'd run until you pass out regardless of the gear you're carrying.

What do you reckon?
