Clearing the air of BCRF's CEO Salary

Posted: 11 May 2018 11:42 AM PDT

A few fellow Redditors are concerned about BCRF's CEO Salary, with comments across a few threads pointing out that the CEO's 1.02% is too high and that we're only feeding into a corrupt charity (despite the high star ratings). This has also caused people to be unsure of whether or not BCRF is a good company to support. So to clear the air, I 1) emailed the company to find their side of the story, and 2) did a little bit of extra research to compare the company to other ones. You can't just look at one company and then deem them unjust if you haven't taken the time to see how they compare to their peers. TL:DR is at the bottom.

My original email:

Hello!

I'm a regular player of Overwatch and love all the streams and partnership that Blizzard has done with BCRF! I post updates on the charity streams (the streams have raised over $50,000 already!) and am excited for the final number. Many people are also excited about the partnership being BCRF given its high ratings and that a huge portion or proceeds actually go to research. However, a lot of other comments have questioned the salary of the CEO. I am not fully familiar with how non profit charities work or the reasoning for the distribution, so I hope you could provide some clarification before the Overwatch charity event is done so that I can inform others. Thanks in advance for your response and have a good day!

Their response:

Dear /u/binhvinhmai,

Thank you so much for your support and posting to the charity streams for us! This is the first time we've had the opportunity to be part of the gaming community and it has been truly exciting! As you mentioned, we too are proud of our fiscal responsibility and our transparency as the highest rated breast cancer charity in the U.S. (by third party ratings organizations including CharityWatch and Charity Navigator that consider compensation in their analysis). BCRF is also the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world – the only with a mission singularly focused on research. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and I lost my grandmother to metastatic disease. I share the desire to ensure the maximum amount of dollars goes toward research – that's what brought me to BCRF.

For the past 16 years, our CEO has evolved BCRF from a NY-based research grant organization to a global research engine that has been part of every major breakthrough in breast cancer research over more than two decades. Her salary places her in the 60th percentile of her peers in the non-profit sector. Our Board of Directors and compensation committee believe her salary is on par with a CEO who has led the organization to year over year growth while maintaining the lowest percentage of administrative costs when compared to our peer group.

Thanks again for your question – and for your support! Please let me know if there are any others I can answer.

Comparisons:

Also of note, it is important to compare the percentages of the BCRF's CEO salary % compared to other breast cancer charity companies that have similar high ratings. BCRF has a 91.16 rating and spends 1.02% on their CEO. In comparison:

When looking at charities that have similar expenses, BCRF's total expenses is $68,142,761, so it's important to also look at how similar non profit companies do as well. I've only included a few, as there are plenty of cancer research organizations and I only have so much limited time*. In comparison:

TL:DR:

TL:DR:Overall, the 1.02% spent on the CEO of BCRF's salary isn't out of place, especially compared to A) other breast cancer research facilities and B) other companies that are somewhat similar to it's total expenses. Many commenters have expressed skepticism over the 1.02% going to the CEO but you can't judge a company in a vacuum - you have to do some additional research before making a final call. I think these examples show that BCRF is a good company, with high ratings, and thus, we can just enjoy the remainder of the event without worry that we're supporting a corrupt charity.

On that note, don't forget that this event runs until May 21st. If you can't donate $15 for the Mercy Pink skin, then feel free to hop onto the charity streams and donate what you can!

  • Note that I am NOT going to include non profit companies that spend over $1 billion because the compensations and percentages are drastically different to companies of BCRF's sizes, and the $1 billion companies can only be compared to each other.

Lastly, if you have any questions or have more concerns, feel free to reach out to bcrf@bcrfcure.org. They're very kind and would be happy to help clarify any concerns. One of their biggest points of pride is their very open transparency.

Edit: my first gold! Whoo-hoo! Thanks kind stranger!
