About the lore, from a casual player's perspective

Posted: 10 May 2018 06:38 AM PDT

First poster here. A little nervous.

Two years ago, my boyfriend introduced me to Heroes of the Storm. It quickly became one of my favorite games, along with Starcraft, to play with him. We tried to play quick match a few times, but that ended fast because wow people can be cruel.

Brawls went the same way. People pinging me over and over when I died, and... Just, I know I suck. However, I don't play Heroes competitively. I'm here to play with my friends and laugh and have fun. So I stay out of ranked, out of Brawls for the most part, and out of the way of the competitive people. Now I exclusively play vs AI with my boyfriend, and usually with other AI teammates. If I do play Brawls, I tend to keep team chat turned off. Overall, I don't think I'm the only person that does this. There are sure to be lots of casual HotS players who just stay on the downlow.

When I heard about lore being added to the game, thanks to this sub, I dropped everything to look at all of it. The comic? I love the art style! While I'm disappointed the Raven Lord is a human, I've been theorizing, and I think he'll shapeshift into that giant raven we all know. Actually, this 'Chapter One' of the lore has me thinking a TON more about the game than ever before. The red background with eyes? It reminds me of Amon, but more sinister, more of a harbinger for more to come. I can't help but wonder what is next. Will Omega Swarm be tied into a story? Will there be map themes now? Will there be factions in a limited time event?

When I return to look at this subreddit, it disappoints me to see so many complaining about the upcoming lore. I write it off as... Well, I write it off because this subreddit seems prominently focused on the competitive scene and meta. I get it: hardcore players or those devoted to specific Blizzard games would not appreciate the rather minor lore additions.

But here me out -- I'm someone who has never played Warcraft, Diablo, and only dabbled in Overwatch (scandalous, I know). To be honest, most of the heroes I never cared about before. There are so many, too many. I love Starcraft heroes of course, but Leoric, Li-Ming, Lost Vikings, Auriel -- I have no idea who they are or what game they are from, and I feel little towards them.

Now that there's the idea of lore floating around, I'm paying more attention to these characters. I'm tracking ones with new skins, looking for signs of which might change sides next. I'm playing more, waiting for the next update. In general, I care more about the game. There's so much untapped potential that is finally being utilized. I'm as interested now as I was in 2.0.

I'm also playing new heroes -- no longer just sticking to Dehaka, Abathur, and all the zerg bunch. I almost want to buy Gul'dan just for his new skin, which looks wickedly cool. In fact, I'm planning on buying Warcraft 3 now, thanks to Heroes encouraging me to look into Gul'dan and even Arthas (please don't spoil anything). On the other side, while I don't think Diablo is my game, Auriel and Deckard Cain, as it turns out, actually have neater backgrounds than I thought. And from Overwatch, Junkrat is just adorable. He makes me want to play Overwatch every day.

If I saw a Blizzard developer right now, I don't care what game they're from, I'd hug them. Sometimes it's not always about the competitive field. While this subreddit seems to revolve around that sometimes, I truly think there are more casual players than competitive, as most games are. But I don't know the numbers. I only know my experience. From Heroes, I've learned sometimes it's just about having fun with friends, and having something to talk about with them. Thank you, Blizzard. Heroes and you will always have a place in my heart, right up there with zerglings. Thank you for lore.

Edit: To who gave the gold, you are amazing, thank you so much! I came back to see this post and started crying. All day I was so nervous and waiting to check my phone again, scared to see it. You guys are all amazing people. Thank you more than anything.

The voice announcer going "MVP" doesn't fit the game at all. Replace it with the equipped voice line?

Posted: 10 May 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Personally I dislike the entire MVP screen and how it works, but the equipped voice line is more or less just a waste right now. If the game were to hit a large bass note and be followed by your hero saying their voice line, it would be less immersion breaking, and give a point to the voice line.

Why doesn't blizzard advertise HotS?

Posted: 10 May 2018 08:40 AM PDT

I can literally never think of a single ad I got about this game. I found it through my brother who told me I could play abathur on it, which excited me since I had recently finished the other HotS(Heart of the swarm). Has blizzard ever said why they do not want to advertise the game? I am sure most of the speculation is that the numbers don't justify running an advertisement campaign, but with 6.5 million active players that seems pretty reasonable number to get money on a MOBA.

Edit: This is the source of 6.5 million players https://www.superdataresearch.com/dota-plus-may-be-too-little-too-late-for-dota-2s-disappearing-player-base/

Of course, none of this is to say that Dota 2 is a dead or dying game. It still beats out other MOBA titles like SMITE (2.0M) and Heroes of the Storm (6.5M) in size

It says on the bottom of the page. It also shows that Smite has 2million if anyone is interested in that

Whats up with the AI Bots?

Posted: 10 May 2018 12:01 PM PDT

Since I have plenty of opportunities to have AI bots join halfwya through my games, Ive noticed some really strange behavior with them. Some exmaples include:

  • Hearthing for no reason (full hp, the player who the ai is following is right next to them)
  • Repeated mount/dismounting, or repeatingly trying to miunt and canceling
  • Running into towers
  • Defending core even when no minions are attack it
  • Not following on mount (even when player leading it is mounted)

Did something break in the ai or something in a recent patch?

How I changed my drafting style and climbed five ranks.

Posted: 10 May 2018 02:39 PM PDT

In the last week I tried a new way of drafting out and had good results. So good in fact I've been having so much better luck in enough games to steadily climb myself back out from P5 to P1. Hopefully I can get back to D3 where I was a few seasons ago.

So when a lobby starts the first thing I do is look over the match history of my allies. Look at every game they've lost and look for the common denominator.

Usually it looks something like this:

  1. Loses frequently to Genji because their positioning isn't great.
  2. Loses frequently to Diablo because they like being up front and get body slammed.
  3. Loses frequently to Malfurion because they get caught in roots constantly.
  4. Loses frequently to Chromie because they lose their shit when they can't dodge properly.
  5. etc.

So instead of banning based on meta, I ban based on the heroes who have been wrecking my particular team mates. It allows them to play to their highest potential without worrying about the one or two heroes that constantly stress them out (for me that's Kerrigan).

If I'm not the leader banning, I'll try to browse a little more quickly and point out to the leader who we should ban based on someone's match history, and usually they're more than happy to follow through on it.

I'll also look at common allies that help my team win. If I see that one ally always wins when they have Dva on their side, I'm going to lock it in if I can.

It always makes people a little upset when they see me first-banning ETC or something ridiculous, but then the game just goes so smoothly. It could be a coincidence of course, but I'd like to think there's a positive correlation.

Lastly, if I see someone is an absolute rock star at a specific role or hero, I do everything I can to help get them in that role. Sometimes that means convincing the leader to go healer, but if they've got a 75\% win rate on Brightwing, you want to cash in on that shit.

Hope this helps!

The quality of the AI still isn't close to acceptable

Posted: 10 May 2018 08:33 AM PDT

It's been a while since the AI update and I haven't seen much talk about it but the AI continues to make games completely unplayable if you're landed with one, especially if they're a support. They constantly walk out into lane randomly and into 4 people to die, if you ping them to follow you they will automatically start hearthing if you step more than a few cm away from them, it's a really bad experience for everyone on their team and pretty much guarantees a loss. Every time I see someone lose their connection the team automatically gets salty because they know it's a 4v5 game, not a 4.5v5 game or something like that. Are there more plans for changes to the AI, I hope so!

Spellbreaker Hero Concept with talents

Posted: 10 May 2018 09:42 AM PDT

Talents in comments.

Design Notes 1: We know blizz doesn't like mana burn, so I've elected to make him a silence tank.

Design Notes 2: Steal spell is going to cause problems, and I think the worst of it is managed by not allowing it to grab anything outside the standard QWER.

Spellbreaker - Ranged Warrior

Basic attacks do medium damage, at ~1 attack per second, at range 4.5(1 less than most range characters)

D - Spell Absorption - Spellbreaker passively has 30 spell armor. This trait can be activated to gain a shield proportional to the amount of damage this armor has prevented in the last six seconds. 16s cooldown.

Q - Feedback - Spellbreaker's next attack deals bonus ability damage and silences the target for 0.5 seconds. Using this ability resets the Spellbreaker's AA cooldown. 4s cooldown.

W - Mana Wyrm - Summons a mana wyrm to follow an enemy hero and deal damage to them over three seconds. Whenever that hero uses a basic ability, the mana wyrm's duration is reset. When the wyrm's duration expires, it returns to Spellbreaker, restoring hp proportional to the damage it dealt. 12s cooldown.

E - Siphon Mana - Passive: The spellbreaker does not recover mana normally. Active: The spellbreaker clicks to create a tether between himself and an enemy hero within range. This tether lasts until the target leaves its (short) range. For the duration, Spellbreaker rapidly recovers mana. 12s cooldown, beginning when the tether is broken.

R1 - Arcane Overdrive - Throw a charged glaive a short distance in the chosen direction, damaging, passing through and silencing all enemy heroes hit for two seconds. If it hits any heroes, the Spellbreaker gets +30% spell damage, +40% movespeed, and every basic attack deals a minor amount of ability damage and silences the target for 0.25 seconds. Arcane Overdrive lasts for four seconds, plus two seconds for each enemy hero silenced. 80s cooldown.

R2 - Steal Spell - The next time within three seconds a nearby enemy hero uses a basic or heroic ability, the spellbreaker gains an untalented version of that ability on this key for up to ten seconds. If active, the ability is lost after casting. 20s cooldown, beginning when initially used.

Can i please keep my already selected skin/mount when i play a random hero?

Posted: 10 May 2018 03:12 AM PDT

Not much more to add, just this. As someone who plays random qm, would we cool to have my hero in game with the currently equipped skin/mount/spray instead of a random skin and mount that i dont even like.

I just had an incredible Quick Match experience.

Posted: 10 May 2018 04:03 PM PDT

My wife and I love playing a few games of QM every day to wind down after work. We know that there are awful team comps, terrible players, and negative attitudes, but we both see that as part of the challenge and always strive to be positive. Earlier today we played a game where a couple teammates died in the first couple minutes, and two players immediately started bickering. I stated that we still had plenty of time to win the game, that negativity won't help, and asked if they cold focus on working together. My wife backed me up.

Guess what? They did. There was no more negativity for the rest of the game, and we won pretty handily after that in spite of various deaths and lost team fights. At the end I thanked them for putting negativity aside, and one of the players agreed in chat and thanked everyone.

That's all. I just wanted to remind everyone that a positive attitude always has a chance to shine even into the darkest depths of Quick Match.

Cheers! <3
