Greetings r/Civ.

Hello and welcome to Free Talk Friday, a megathread where everyone can rant, vent, or otherwise express themselves to their heart's content. This is also a place where you can organize your thoughts, or even a party for multiplayer games if you so wish to.

Despite the mostly free of expression, however, we would like to ask you to still follow the rules, mainly:

I am a white haired old grandpa trying to figure this game out. I'm basically road kill on the info highway. Sorry if these questions are obvious to you cyber generation, but I sure could use a little help here.

My kid downloaded the rise and fall version, but I am not sure it updated. Is there any way I can double check to make sure my game is completely up to date?

If I might ask about two other points as well: First, is the assignment of great people automatic, or are you supposed to buy them, or take some action to get them? Is there any special strategy one should conduct concerning them, or are they simply an automatic result given how effectively you are playing the game?

Second, does the game tell you when you can have a governor? Are they automatically assigned? Are there actions you need to be taking concerning them, or strategies one should consider?

To try and avoid another "beyond earth is underrated" praise post, I'll keep this part short - but Beyond Earth really is underrated in some aspects. Some of the features they included are downright experimental for a Civ game and despite being such a samey copy of the game it's based on, Beyond Earth has a lot of unique, really well thought out ideas to it.

Mainly I'm referring to the diplomacy system as of Rising Tide. Honestly, with how the diplomatic points work, as well as trading favors, Rising Tide represents the ideal Civ diplomacy system to me. It's a shame the game itself is often a mess and pretty bland when it comes to interesting political situations.

Whenever war is declared in one of my Rising Tide games, there's always a intricate net of alliances that get triggered, throwing the global political state into chaos. At times in Beyond Earth this actually gets annoying, but it always reminds me of how I wished late-game diplomacy worked in a mainline Civ game, where you're observing the progression of history instead of exploring the developers Civ headcanon. It's quite engaging when you need to start spending favors to end a war with a power you never wanted to go to war with to begin with, and challenging when a pesky Civ you wish to go to peace with is too power hungry and won't accept peace until you beat it into them.

But the diplomacy system is only one aspect of the game that I wished was ported. The other is the tech web.

I generally see a lot of praise for the tech web, but I think many agree it wouldn't fit as well in a mainline Civ game. The linear tech tree represents progression which is key to the Civ game formula. But the web is an endearing way to explore a sci-fi futuristic tech tree, where the player doesn't 'progress' in a linear way but chooses where to devote their massive scientific endeavors.

Exploring a sci-fi futuristic tech tree kind of sounds like what the "future tech" option should be, really. IMO, it wouldn't be too game breaking to switch the tech tree from a linear tech tree to a tech web once the future tech is researched, and have a whole slew of extra techs at the end. This tech web would never be able to be completely filled and would allow for the most powerful of buildings and units. Keeping this tech tree strict and forcing the player to strategize where they spend their science points would add a really engaging timesink to the end of the game, which tends to be pretty barren once you lose any research progression.

Running with the idea of introducing radically new game concepts with future tech, why not basically port Rising Tide's floating city feature? Sure, it's sci-fi as hell and mainline Civ games tend to avoid 'filling in' the future tech tree, but it'd be a really good way to, again, reintroduce an early game mechanic in the late game. This time, the ability to settle in general. With the entire map filled border-to-border by the end of the game, being able to specialize in your fancy tech web to expand into the ocean could be interesting.

Basically, playing Rising Tide sometimes makes me feel like I'm just playing a Civ game where the game continues running past future tech. I know this is indeed the design principle of the game to begin with, but my main point is that it isn't just a thematic design principle. It isn't fleeting or superficial. The actual mechanics of the game itself reflect this idea greatly, and I don't think it'd be such a bad thing if Civ Vi got some kind of expansion that basically changes the game once you reach future tech, flooding the game with crazy sci-fi ideas brought over from Beyond Earth.

Also, change the diplomacy system to the one from Rising Tide once the players advance into the modern era. This would just be an objective advantage sci-fi ideas aside.

Entertainment Complexes and Luxuries?

Does increasing amenities in a city of your empire make the luxuries in your 'pool' reallocate?

What I mean, more simply is this: Luxuries can only give +1 amenity to 4 cities. If you increase the amenities in one of your cities through an Entertainment Complex, do the other luxuries switch cities to equalize the issues from not having enough amenities?

Right now all they are are slightly better adjacent bonuses for 3 districts. The ships are ok but situational, polders are rare, and Radio Oranje is completely irrelevant.

Now the whole theme is supposed to be trade, but 1 culture is not really enough.

Behold tulips

Tulips would be a luxury resource that you would receive 1 for every polder you build. They give +3 anemities spread across 3 cities. Hopefully this would incentivise them to rely on trade of luxuries, just like the real civilization did.

Best totalitarian civ? (civ 5)

Hello friends. I'll start off by saying I have civ 5 with all the expansions. I haven't played civ in a while and when I did I tended to be more peaceful and diplomatic and would run more democratic policies. I want to play a game as a complete autocrat and also want to be more war focused. I was wondering what are some civs that are either really good at that or really fun to play that way, even if they aren't that great and ends in my own doom. Thank you in advance for your help.
