We need a mobile Pet Battle app

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 08:27 AM PDT

I know this has been mentioned before on forums, but it never seems to get much traction.

The main argument against it seems to be that it would eliminate a need to play in-game which is only true if it was PvE based. If we had a mobile pet battle app that was purely PvP I think it would actually get a higher number of players into pet battles/pet collecting.

New insights into Azerite gear - BlizzardWatch interview with Senior Producer Travis Day and Senior Concept Artist Jimmy Lo

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 09:47 AM PDT

There has been a blitz of information coming out today about BfA, but I just wanted to highlight some new information that details Blizzard's design philosophy for Azerite gear.

Blizzardwatch interviewed two people from Blizzard. The full interview can be found here, which has more information about various features in BfA.

However, the question pertaining to Azerite is this:

Chaud: With the Heart of Azeroth, you pick the traits. How does that [the traits] change when you change specs?

Travis: So, the goal – hopefully, if we do this right – the goal is to have abilities on the different rings of the tier that are applicable, both generally and specifically, so it is possible you may still have gear pieces that you prefer when you switch specs. And I think that's kind of an interesting and healthy part of gameplay, right? Is collecting multiple gear sets and having those and having them have specific purposes and roles. [Such as] here's my PVP set, here's my tanking set. So I think that's good. But I think there will be ones where it's like – trying to think of an example – Frost Bolt! Whether I'm PVP or PVE, that's a good thing to have 10% increased Crit chance on. So, there will be more generalized traits that are like, 'Yeah, I like this no matter what'

And then you can get even more generic and you know, spell Crit is increased by 5%. So we're trying to hopefully get it [where] as you increase in power, they get increasingly specific, but at the lower levels – especially for questing gear – if you kill, like, Totes McGoats in Tirargarde is one of our vignettes, you can acquire a piece, and you can go, 'Okay, cool, I'm just passively a little bit better. It's not that advanced, but I also didn't do very advanced content. I killed a goat, so.. it feels appropriate.'

Azerite came out on the Alpha recently but unfortunately, there wasn't any real information on what was a placeholder and what wasn't, or what was an intended feature or not, so hopefully this answers some of our questions.

In summary:

  • The traits seen on Alpha are likely boring and generic because they are from low-level gear. (This was perhaps obvious, but it's nice to get confirmation).
  • It seems not being able to respec traits is intended, as Blizzard wants you to collect multiple sets of gear that have different traits which you can use for different situations.
  • Traits will not change when you change spec. The reasoning for this seems the same as not being able to respecc: Blizzard wants you to collect multiple pieces of gear, a pvp set, a tanking set, a dps spec, etc.
  • Traits will get more 'specific' in the higher levels and will move away from generic, passive upgrades. (I'm still unclear what this means for hybrid classes. Will there be raid gear that is designated 'tanking' gear with tanking only traits? No idea).

So, yeah, there ya go. It's nice to get some clarification on this, even if their design philosophy isn't exactly enthusing me.
