What's the point of unskippable videos when starting up a game?

This is something I've been wondering for a while. Most AAA games nowadays will show you short videos showcasing, say, the engine used to make the game, the developer, the publisher, the sponsoring hardware... I'm mostly okay with it, except for the fact that they almost always seem to be unskippable. That grinds my gears a lot.

I'm okay with seeing them once, since it's sort of informative. But having to wait up to a minute just to get to the game menu just because someone decided not to allow us to skip these, every single time? What are devs thinking!? The average user probably doesn't care too much about who made the game or which engine it's using. Is this a requirement coming from corporate, in most cases? A theory I've heard that kind of makes sense is that they can be used to mask loading times. That's OK, but I still feel it doesn't justify having users go through the same thing over and over.

Sorry if this whole post comes out as a rant (it actually kind of is), but I'm genuinely curious about the reasoning behind it.

How did you find your group of gamers friends?

So I've been gaming pretty much my whole life, but I've always kind of felt that playing games was a solo experience. I'm pretty into RPGs, but I can only level up or find hidden chests so many times by myself. I mean sure, I've played some coop and multiplayer games, but I've always wanted to have a community (big or small) of players that are more like friends. I think it'd be cool to consistently play with awesome people.

So my question is, how do all of you find gamer friends? Every time I play with a coworker it's a little awkward, or when I play with family members they only want to play FPS multiplayer games.

Also I guess I should mention that I'm on PS4. Does this matter?

Multiplatform players, how do you decide which platform to buy a game for if the game is multiplatform?

Just out of curiosity. I have an Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, and also occasionally game on PC. A friend of mine was like "How do you juggle all those systems and getting games for each?" I was just curious to see how everyone that multiplatform games decides which games to buy for which console?

For me personally, I play most games on Xbox One at the moment, mainly because I prefer the controller, UI, and the Xbox One X makes games look gorgeous. I have a PS4/Switch for exclusives, which Sony/Nintendo has plenty of. I have my PC for MMOs and RTS games.

Is it ok for a game to lie to the player, and trick them into doing things that they might consider morally wrong? (in the game's story)

Whilst reading a review for Farcry 5, a concept for a game occurred to me.


The game starts with the main character, a normal looking man, on the phone to what seems to be some sort of cult.

"Let me speak to my daughter! I just... I need to know if she's alright!"

"She doesn't want to speak to you. Don't call again."

"I have a court order that... "

"You should know how much that means to us..." hangs up.

So it turns out that these cultists are trying to secede from the country, and the main character's six year old daughter is in there with them. They are armed and passionate about defending their "homeland."

The army is gathering and will launch an attack once the politicians get their act together. A sympathetic army commander turns a blind eye and lets you into the combat zone to get your daughter before any serious shooting starts.

Like a typical FPS, you grab a lot of guns, go in shooting, kill many cultists, and eventually find your daughter. The game is linear and has no choices.

Then the ending of the game plays showing father and daughter reunited, and it turns out that the MC is an abusive father who's only after his daughter because his dead wife's rich parents recently died and left her a massive inheritance. The cultists, whilst they have an crazy goal of seceding from the nation, are otherwise normal and peaceful folk when left alone. They promised to protect her from the MC. His daughter ran away to be with her aunt, who is a cultist, and one of your victims along the way.


In other mediums like film and novels, we see unreliable narrators and antiheros sometimes, and it's usually fine. But in a videogame, where the player is acting out the actions of the main character, is it an unforgivable betrayal if the game lies to the player about the nature of the character they're controlling, and forces the player to do things that later on turn out to be awful and wrong?


The question reminded me a little bit about Silent Hill 2. But the difference is, although the MC in SH2 has done something awful in the past, all of his actions in the game roughly align with what the player might want (ie. to overcome obstacles and find out the truth.)

Veteran gamers and classic fps lovers, how would you respond to a reimplementation of classic Source engine player movements in Unreal Engine 4?

Now before someone links this saying that it's already been done, I don't want to pay $15 for this implementation when making games is just a hobby for me.

I would like to implement classic Source engine player movements into UE4, so basically bhopping, surfing, etc. My only fear is that, no matter how similar I can make it, there will be people who think that the movement in the game is awful because they would have to slightly re-train their muscle memory to perform these movements.

For those of you who like these kinds of character movements, does it matter to you how similar the mouse and keyboard movements must be in a reimplementation? Will even a slight difference in the way its designed make you dislike the movement in the game entirely?

Why people seem to not care about game mode in multiplayer games ?

I'm taking a very specific exemple, the first Titanfall.

A lot of people where criticizing the game for being too shallow, too repetitive or things like that.

Even people that liked the game where asking for more game modes to fight the monotony.

The thing is, all these people were playing on simple game mode like Attrition (basically a TDM) while the real depth of the game was in CTF, that almost no one was playing.

And it's the same for most games, the vast majority of players go straight to the simplest game modes, and get eventually bored, and then blame the "lack of content" or things like that.

On the other hand, games with a single (or at least main) well tought game mode like Overwatch or R6 Siege keep players hooked for a long time. So basicaly devs are "forcing" players to play the game the "right" way, but nobody seems to give credit to that.

I get that most players just want to frag some dudes without thinking too much, but I don't get why it seems that everybody, even "educated" gamers, seem to consider game modes as a fifth wheel while it's actually (one of) the most important component.

Why do people have such terrible names?

This post is entirely a you know what grinds my grinds my gears rant but . . .

Why's everybody got such terrible names in online videogames? I would be ashamed to be playing a game where other people see my name as Deth_Stalker95. A name shouldn't have a bunch of a numbers in it just because the name you actually wanted wasn't available. You find another one, use some creativity. You don't need to bookend your name with a bunch of x's like xXx_420_69_Blaze_it_xXx which now that I look at it, probably is a cut above what I normally see.

I'm willing to bet that all of you reading this right now have better reddit usernames than 99% of people I seem to run into online. Maybe it's something you can explain with "They're children" or "You're out-of-touch with the zeitgeist" but I don't ever remember a time when random assortments of letters and vowels and capitalization made for a name.

Should Switch owners be considered as "gamers"?

In my opinion: no. Why? because it would be like calling a person playing on a phone some mini games a "gamer" or calling a cashier a mathematician or a dog owner a dog trainer. In previous generation Wii wasn't even compared often with other consoles and wasn't considered in fanboy wars even though it has sold the most consoles although theoretically Nintendo is producing video game consoles in practice they don't have too much in common with traditional gaming industry due to its casual and childish brand because otherwise we should call lego owners or other toy owners gamers and we should consider Lego the biggest company in gaming industry but we don't because both Nintendo and Lego aren't gaming companies.

Looking for PC Minecraft Players

Alright Guys, How we doing today?! So a group of a few people are looking to start up a MC Survival Server. It will be pure vanilla. I want to create a server similar to Hermit Craft. I am in the process of constructing the server and should be up and running soon! So there are a couple requirements to be considered to join. Must be decent at MC... Interviews will take place... You must actually play on the server.... You must stream or post a video on YouTube once a week at least. If you don't do this you for up to 3 weeks you will be removed from the server. You must interact with the community every once in a while. Must be an honest player. No Griefing No Stealing etc..... Harmless pranks are welcome. If we can get some serious players I think this could be a really fun time!
