A fold-out Ocarina of Time map/guide from an old issue of Nintendo Power, found while digging through my childhood stuff. I had to scan it in 6 sections, so please forgive the seams!

Playing through a Minish Cap emulation on my computer and I really like it. What Zelda game should I try next? I can't emulate anything more complex than an n64 game :(

[OoT] Do I need to beat Gerudo Fortress to advance??

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 10:17 AM PDT

I hate this part of the game, I make it far into Gerudo then have to fucking restart because i get caught. I already beat all the temples except the Spirit Temple, is this needed to get to the Spirit Temple?

Functional Storytelling

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 09:18 PM PDT

In the champions ballad DLC (which I've just replayed), I noticed a missed opportunity. The champions are fleshed out significantly from their fairly barebones stories in the main game, specifically in that every character reveals some loss or insecurity that ails them. These are shown in their journals and in the cutscenes with each.

Mipha lost Link, and feared having to face her duty as champion.

Revali sought approval from others, and was insecure about having to work hard in addition to being talented.

Daruk found the non-goron world confusing in its complexity relative to his own home and has a fear that eats at him, even if silly.

Urbosa regretted losing her friend in zelda's mother, and ultimately failed to protect zelda.

In short, each story reveals a weakness or regret held by each champion. The missed opportunity here is one of form and function matching: the divine beast ability+ versions could have been better done. Rather than simply recharging, each ability could have matched up with the regret or loss faced by each champion, to correspond with their story and tell their tale in the gameplay itself.

Mipha was a healer who was forced to fight and kill. To this end, if killing enemies recharged her ability faster or restored health, the pain of betraying ones nature could be expressed.

Revali presented you with his masterpiece, but said nothing of how often he screwed up in figuring it out. Removing fall damage with a puff of air at the end of a fall could have shown how he had to learn.

Daruk's is tough, since he didn't really have a meaningful regret, but he did sure love to eat, according to his journal. Considering how the various stones in the game claim that they contain magic power, perhaps making them edible with unique effects could have been done.

Lastly, urbosa sought to protect zelda and help her grow, at any cost. This could have been implemented through her ability gaining an effect while depleted. If used at no charge, it could drain health and return a proportional damage buff for a short time. Self-sacrifice to protect others.

This is a place where the function of the ability could have been a storytelling element unto itself. It's just a musing, but it would be cool to see something more like this in future games.
