Smash Summit 6 Tournament Format

Hey everyone, Slime from BTS here (doing my best Ken impression).

Here's the format, seeding, and pools for Smash Summit 6. We had a lot of help from resident SME PracticalTAS to craft a format that we feel is a better fit to our tournament previous formats. Without further ado...

The Format

Smash Summit 6 will use a condensed Swiss format for the Singles competition. Players will be divided into two pools and play three swiss rounds based on predetermined seedings. All 16 players will advance to a double-elimination playoff bracket in which those that won at least two rounds will start in the Winners Bracket and those that lost at least two rounds will start in the Losers Bracket.

(The number next to each player's name denotes their overall seed based on The Melee Stats Winter 2017/Spring 2018 Power Rankings and MIOM top 100 for Ginger and 2saint)

In the second and third swiss rounds, each matchup will be based on the results of specific matches in the previous round. This process will pair players of the same score while preventing rematches.

After the third round ends, players will be seeded into the Winners and Losers Bracket based on the following metrics:

  1. Total Sets Won
  2. Sum of Sets Won By Players Beaten
  3. Sum of Sets Won By Players Lost To
  4. Games Won Minus Games Lost
  5. Head-To-Head (if applicable, and exactly two players remain tied)
  6. Original Seeding

Tiebreaking

The Swiss process and tiebreaker progression have been selected to minimize or eliminate players' opportunities to benefit from deliberately losing a set. In Swiss rounds 1 and 2, losing a set to beat an easier opponent later on will weaken one's tiebreaker strength, while in Swiss round 3, the final matches played will be the difference between Winners Bracket and Losers Bracket for the competitors.

Once the pool seeds are determined, the Singles bracket will be generated with initial matchups pairing players from opposite groups (A1 vs B4, A2 vs B3, etc). At this point, the lower bracket match progression will be skewed to attempt to avoid rematches in bracket.

  • Rematches of the 3rd round of pools for players who were 1-1 will be avoided
  • Rematches that would require no upsets according to seeding will be avoided
  • Rematches that would require 1 upset according to seeding should be avoided
  • Rematches that would require 2 upsets according to seeding may be avoided

Bracket will progress as normal from this point. The Winners Bracket champion will have a one set advantage in the grand final, requiring the Losers Bracket champion to win two Best of Five sets to win the tournament.

Once again Hungrybox wins the invitational and we're informed a special guest will be challenging him.

Hbox: "Reggie?"

"No. Think higher. Much higher."

Out comes THE Sakurai and the crowd and twitch chat goes wild. Sakurai speaks through his translator:

"I hear you and your friends have been talking trash about me and my directive. Let's settle it in Smash."

Hungrybox sits down ready to face Sakurai in Smash 5, but Sakurai stops him.

"No."

Sakurai signals to off stage and an assistant walks on... Holding a GameCube. Hungrybox's jaws drop. There is an actual pause in twitch chat. The crowd is silent.

Sakurai sets up the system, turns on Melee and faces Hbox. "Pick."

Hbox picks the Jiggs and Sakurai chooses an unconventional character for the match-up... Someone thought to have a 10-90 match-up.

Sakurai proceeds to destroy Hbox, introducing a new Anti-Puff meta, solidifying his supremacy and saving Melee.

... Until he picks up the GameCube, throws it to the ground and tells the crowd that Daddy Sakurai says it's time we move on from Melee and focus on the latest installment. Melee dies, the internet crashes and Mango ends up in jail.

The End.

(PS: Melee is my fav but I thought this would be hype and funny)

Up-Smash is a really powerful move and allows Fox to kill Puff at early %'s. This got me thinking, could Fox realistically down throw puff and follow up with an Up-Smash by reacting to what tech the puff does?
