Smite - Competitive Megathread | Week of April 1 2018 | The SPL enters Week 3

Competitive Megathread | Week of April 1 2018 | The SPL enters Week 3

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:04 AM PDT

HERE IT GOES AGAIN

We've moved passed the horror that was the LoL invasion. Now we move onto the third week of the SPL. After this week we'll be halfway through the Spring Split, and things will finally be taking shape. We have some super exciting games this week, and we kick off with arguably the most anticipated game in NRG vs. DiG. Both teams have looked fantastic, but there's no arguing that DiG is the top dog in Europe at the moment, perhaps NRG and EmilZy can throw a wrench in their plans?

In NA we'll see the top team CLG play twice against LG and EUnited. As we all know, EUnited is yet to win a single game this season, so the odds against CLG are not in their favor, but maybe they've been preparing something behind the scenes for this week.

You can watch all the matches here on Mixer!

NOTE: ALL TIMES ARE IN EDT

Remember, most countries are now in Daylight Savings Time, so the European viewers will probably be watching an hour earlier.

All times are still in EDT

These green notifications should disappear once you've viewed the reward it is showing you, only new rewards give you a green notification. I don't mind having unrolled chests, but this permanent green box irritates me.

To the Team who I played with on Conquest when it was 4 v 5

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 06:35 PM PDT

Thanks for supporting me, your Fafnir, in the duel lane. I know it was annoying for the Rat or Loki to rotate to my line to help me out but you guys didn't BM and keep relatively positive. We ended up winning because you guys made amazing rotations and Duel lane didn't completely collapse. And thanks for knowing I didn't mean to steal those two kills, I didn't expect my Breath to hit them right.

But thanks for showing me even in bad situations, we can stop have fun and even come back.

What it REALLY means when a guardian/tank jumps back into combat (guide/comedy but mostly guide bc sheesh ya'll need this)

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 09:59 AM PDT

Here we go guys, a comprehensive guide to what it means when a guardian heads into combat with the enemy and how to react.

Scenario 1: You and/or others have low health. If you and/or others, even including the guardian, have low health, and are retreating, the guardian may do one of two things. A) Charge in and slow them down to allow all the low health squishies to survive/back. B) stay slightly behind you while running away. Now here's the thing: If your guardian runs back in while multiple people on your team have low health, run away. hmmmm, let me repeat that: IF YOUR GUARDIAN RUNS BACK IN WHILE MULTIPLE PEOPLE ON YOUR TEAM HAVE LOW HEALTH, RUN AWAY! I cannot stress this enough, your tank is trying to save you and running in while he sacrifices himself is incredibly wasteful.

Scenario 2: Your guardian or tank hits three keys: VRR. Turn around, stop holding don mouse one, and run away. Again, I think i need to repeat myself a bit. RUN AWAY! Also applicable: VRS. Correction, even more applicable. If a tank uses VRS (save yourself!), then he's probably about to do the aforementioned scenario 1: Try to save you and your teammates from almost certain death. Tanks are there to tank! LET THEM TANK!

Scenario 3: Balanced team fight. 5v5 team fight is about to go down, and your tank says VSA (I'll attack!). Correct response for most gods, especially ranged: Wait behind him, with the rest of your team, as the tank will usually use some CC and line up a kill. (Ymir will freeze, Ares will ult, etc.) Your tank is initiating so he can set up a kill for the damaging classes. The INCORRECT response: Run forward into almost certain death because your tank does, get killed, unbalance the team fight, and put the rest of your team at a disadvantage and set up an enemy counter push.

Oh ya, one other thing: If there's an Ares on the other team and you don't take beads first relic, even in assault, then you have just set yourself for a rough early game, enjoy constantly dying to an Ares/literally any damaging god wompo-combo.

Hope this was helpful, and maybe got a few laughs, not trying to make anyone salty, but I feel like if you read this far I'm probably not pissing you off.

Happy Smiting! :)

It's Saturday April 7th. Why do we still not have FP from voting on March 30th?

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 11:20 AM PDT

There's a total of 23 games voted on that we still don't have FP on. That's just as of today, not even counting the games going on today.

If we are paying for this service, why is it neglected so bad?

There NEEDS to be harsher penalties for DC’ing

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 08:43 PM PDT

5/7 of my last games (ranked conquest) were thrown because a player either never showed up or left randomly in the middle of a match and never came back.

A dc every ten games or so is understandable but a 70% + DC rate is a BIG problem that needs to be addressed.

Give Hercules Coloured Boulders

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 03:44 PM PDT

Logged onto 5.6 PTS to see Herc's updated masteries. Bought Golden Hercules. Everything seemed fine and dandy. Used the ult. Found one problem:

The boulder was not golden.

I assumed that the boulder hadn't changed for the other mastery skins too.

So I ask, Hi-rez, why?

Why does Fafnir get coloured breath? Why does Discordia get coloured apples?

Why not give hercules his coloured boulders?

Please do not let this change go live. Give hercules the coloured boulders he deserves.

A group of people on console are literally "boosting" in Smite

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 12:01 PM PDT

On console there a group of people who queue and get two of their friends to queue against them and nd the two friends leave.

I joined their party and and all seven of them were there. I've sent a support ticket and reported all of them in game but will Hi Rez do anything?

This is the saddest thing I've ever seen lmao

Soul Gem Procs On Nu Wa Ult Before Projectile

Strange interaction, seems like the Nu Wa ult targeter is proc'ing the Soul Gem passive before the player ever gets hit with the projectile.

Since all Celtic gods were said to have some sort of transformation

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 08:03 AM PDT

Could we please get a Celtic assassin who's abilities change his/her basic attacks similar to Bellona? It would be really refreshing just not having another straight up ability-based assassin imo. Regarding abilities and stances I have no idea, this wasn't suppose to be some God Concept and I feel like people won't bother caring even if I'd end up making one.

But yeah, Bellona is a really unique god and to have more stance changing abilites on future gods would be interesting imo (even though those end up being broken on release). Also, the ult could be different depending on which stance you're currently in whlist using it or such. Any thoughts on this kind of god?

Make Achilles' ult activate his vulnerability even if he misses/doesn't execute

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:01 PM PDT

Right now Achilles only takes 10% increased damage if he successfully executes his target. His kit is fun (though bloated), and to avoid taking away some of that fun, give him more weaknesses. If he misses his ult, make him take 15% increased damage. That way, players have to think twice before casting it. I'm sure there are a lot more other nerf ideas (and he'll probably need more), though I think this one makes him more interesting.

Also, perhaps nerf the base damage and scaling of it as well? I don't get why it has to be an execute (that can reset), while also having the base damage and scaling of a Loki ult.

SMITE and the Shelf Life of Games

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 04:05 AM PDT

It's interesting to note that the shelf life of many games has drastically decreased recently. Let's take a look at some examples. PUBG was touted as "The Game of 2017"... and there it would remain. 2018 has seen the rise of Fortnite and if I were a gambling man I'd say the clock is ticking for that game as well. Those massive sandbox battle royale games have proven that they only last until the next one comes out.

Destiny 2? That had an even smaller lifespan of around 5 months. The game is completely dead. Battlefront 2... never even got traction. You could even look back to Pokémon Go as a case study for a fad gone wrong. Gamers are getting bored quicker and more easily. Or maybe there's so much new shit that they never get the time to really sink their teeth into something. Or maybe we have grown so demanding of the quality of our video games that if a game makes even the smallest mistake, it's thrown away.

Now you could look at MOBAS as the shining example for games with "staying power," but Paragon and Gigantic just ended. No genre is safe, and throughout it all SMITE has remained the little MOBA that could. It's often described as "like League but in third person." With this sentence, SMITE has claimed a small but valuable share of the MOBA market. Mythology aside, I believe the third person aspect of the game is the main reason it's lived on. It is a relief for players who hate moving with a click. I have no numbers to back this up, but it's how everyone refers to the game: "the third person MOBA."

The next paragraph was edited to better explain my point

Don't mistake me, this is not to belittle the game, It's to make a very important point. New players don't come to this game for the skins, events, or other content. They don't care about a map change and they probably aren't invested in the SPL unless they saw it on Twitch or Mixer. New players likely try it out because it's a third person MOBA, and that makes the game stand out. Sometimes the smallest thing can affect whether your game will flourish for a long time or crumble, and this small aspect of the game has allowed it to grow. However, like our aforementioned games, players can be lost when mistakes are made. Gamers are not complicated. They didn't want a new map in PUBG, they wanted better gameplay. They didn't want loot boxes in Battlefront, they wanted to kill some people as Darth Vader. They didn't want just another ordinary shooter in Destiny 2, but that's what Bungie gave them. Little things can mean a lot in gaming, and everyone who saw the Battlefront 2 debacle knows that gamers love to kill games that make mistakes.

I think the keys to SMITE's success is their ability to adapt to change, sweat the small stuff and stick to their brand. HiRez has done a good job following these things so far. Sure matchmaking isn't great, but they are trying to fix it. Gameplay isn't flawless and there's lots of bugs, but at least HiRez takes care of those things. The question is, how long can they hold onto the third person MOBA market before something else destroys the game? Let's be realistic, they don't have the money that Blizzard has and they don't have the servers that LoL has, but they've made some fantastic steps forward for season 5 and I hope the game can continue on in this bloodthirsty period for gaming.

Thanks for reading.

EDIT

I'd also like to say that it's harder for games to remain popular due to the large amount of competition. This has changed from the pre-steam/console days of gaming when releases were much more limited.

TL;DR

Games die quickly these days, but Smite has hung by the thread of the third person MOBA market for a long time now. Their future success relies on adapting to change, sweating the small stuff and keeping their brand intact.
