Learn Dota 2 - How do I actually get started playing Dota?

How do I actually get started playing Dota?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 02:07 PM PDT

Ok so I understand the title might seem slightly dramatic, but I'll give some background.

I currently only have about 60 hours in Dota 2, with the vast majority of them being back in 2015 where I played maybe 20 games, but now when I play games I feel like I'm being matched with people who are far superior to me and also that I just have no clue what I should be doing. For quite a long time, I didn't really have access to a PC which i could play on, so I spent a lot of time playing a not very well known mobile MOBA called Vainglory (SA Gold, if that means anything to someone) in which I became fairly decent at it, but the mechanics differ so much. If someone knows anything about it to help me transition that'd be great but not too important. I'd call myself decently proficient at last hitting at merit of pure experience but in almost every other aspect I have no clue what I should be doing. i'll try to articulate it down to a few simple points so i don't ramble much longer.

  • How does the team layout work?

I've already established that Dota doesn't seem to have the "traditional" hero compositions and that it is more bound by a farming "priority", but I don't really know what that means or how that translates into where I should be playing and how I should be playing. Which lane should I be in? How many people go in which lane? It's still a bit vague for me.

  • What should I be doing in the mid game?

I've played with a few people who have complained (in a very toxic manner) about how I should be ganking frequently later on in the game, but I just have no sense on what I should be doing when playing mid as I get into the later stages of the game beyond farming creeps and wandering around. What about the other positions? It has felt like I pull of a decent early game but then just get snowballed on by players that just seem to know exactly what to do. I'm not trying to fool myself by saying these players are just very good, but I don't really know what I should be doing to stop them from gaining such a lead.

  • What heroes should I be playing to start?

Back in the games I played ages ago, I mostly played broodmother, riki and viper. Recently I've tried to play more mid with sniper and viper, and also a very unsuccessful game with pangolier off-lane, all ending in tragedy. Are there specific heroes that are more suited to newer players?

Finally, are there any good resources out there that can help me learn the meta, heroes, counters etc.? I've tried to watch the Purge/Day9 stuff and it seems alright but also occasionally difficult to follow with such long stretches of information and I'm not too sure how to articulate it. I understand playing may be the best way to learn, but I'd also like to be as efficient as possible, and the games I'm playing feel awfully out of balance with the games I played back in the day, where it felt the people I were playing against were actually brand new too. Maybe it was the limited pool? I don't remember too much.

If you've got this far, thanks for reading. I kind of feel like I'm being needy but I really want to start to learn the game properly. Thanks for any help <3

Edit: I'd also like to add I normally enjoy playing in a support role, what is the best way to go about learning that and who should I be playing in what position? Thanks again

Party/solo matchmaking

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:15 PM PDT

Does my solo MMR affect matchmaking in a party at all? I know the MMRs are separate, but is there anything 'hidden' at play?

No more Manta on Phantom Lancer? Why better with Sange and Yasha?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:14 PM PDT

Hi. After 7.12, I noticed that not so many people build Manta on Phantom Lancer anymore. I rather often see people building SnY on him instead. In fact, Torte de Lini's guide says that Manta is now only a situational pick on Phantom Lancer. Still, I'd rather pick Manta when the opponents have silence/strong debuff skills. However, I'm curious why Sange and Yasha is now a major item on him?

Thanks for reading!

LD2L Season 2 Signups Open

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 07:29 PM PDT

Learn Dota 2 League Season 2

Announcing Season 2 of Learn Dota 2 League (LD2L)!

You may remember our post a few months back announcing our first full season, or even our trial season. Both seasons ran as an 8 team league, with a round robin regular season and single-elimination playoffs. Shouts to Season 0 Champions Chatham Gang, Season 1 Champions Toxic Idiots, and all of the players and coaches who made the league possible.

What is LD2L?

LD2L is a league for lower-skilled players looking for a friendly but competitive team environment in which to hone their DotA skills. While there are many other great leagues out there, it can often be difficult to improve when playing against people thousands of MMR higher than you, and lower MMR players are often pigeonholed into playing non-core roles. LD2L aims to provide an environment where all of its players can have fun improving in their desired roles.

Who can play in LD2L?

Anyone from the depths of Herald 0 to the mountaintop of Legend 3 is eligible to play in LD2L. That said, if you're above Legend 3 and would like to get involved, fear not! We're always looking for higher MMR players interested in coaching, casting, and mentoring, so feel free to drop by the league discord server and shoot one of the admins a message.

How does LD2L work?

At the start of the season Captains take turns drafting eligible players from the signup pool, forming six-member squads. Each week during the regular season teams face off in bo2 matches for points that determine who makes the playoffs and how they will be seeded. Playoffs are then played bo3 to determine who earns the eternal fame and adulation due to an LD2L Champion.

Schedule

Signups are open until Friday, April 13. Captains will participate in a live draft streamed on Sunday, April 15. Regular season games will be played every Sunday at 5PM Eastern from April 22 through June 3. Playoffs will start June 10 with the finals on June 24.

Squads are encouraged to schedule scrims and/or party queue during the week to dial in your strategies for the weekend officials.

Where can I learn more?

Feel free to drop by the league discord. Our league admins are more than happy to answer any questions you might have, and our veteran players will be running inhouse games until the league starts to vouch new players into the league.

You can also check out the website to read our complete rules, or just jump in and sign up!

Outplaying aoe heroes at mid with Brood

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 06:39 PM PDT

Hello, I'm currently 2.5 k mmr and spam Brood mid offlane with 63 % winrate. I have like 200 matches with her but I still have some problems with the following mids : Lina ; DP ; Kunkka (this one is a pain in the ass) . I can easily beat an SF for example by keeping the spiders away from razes then going melee range. I heard it's possible to beat these heroes by microing the spiderlings and spiderites (I do have keys for each). If some highs mmr Brood spammers can answer me it would really help me, maybe link some replays ?

Picking up Techies

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:28 PM PDT

I'm an experienced 3.7k player that is about to start learning techies, but has no clue how to play him. Are there any streamers or youtube channels to watch for him? I see on dotabuff a lot of the good techies players end up with a right click build (I'm guessing based on the +251 dmg talent), but I have no clue when to transition and what is a good item progression. Thanks!

How to counter tri lanes when playing as axe offlane when a lane mate won't communicate or coordinate with you?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 10:32 AM PDT

Just started playing DOTA 2, have less than 10 games under my belt. Encountering a lot of pudge tri lanes. Really pissing me off and making the game not fun and somewhat unplayable for me. To the point where I am leaving games...... So I make new account......Playing as axe, what should I do when I get into a situation like this?

When I'm playing a spell-damage or utility hero and the enemy carry pops BKB, should I run away or linger out of sight?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 10:30 AM PDT

It's a pretty harsh dilemma to run into!

I played a few games recently as stuff like Lion and Invoker, who are frequently itemized against in the form of BKB due to their oppressive magic damage and CC. Without my CC to defend me, I get torn to shreds, so I try to run away from fights where enemies have BKB.

But my allies have got it into their heads that even when the enemies have BKB, it's time for them to fight (because they either have BKB piercing disables or do mostly physical damage). So they'll continue to fight that fed Gyro with BKB up and leave me watching helplessly, wringing my hands elsewhere.

Should I hang around in the trees to wait for the BKB to expire, or just GTFO as much as possible so that they can't hunt me down?

As a new player that has no idea what his lane opponent(s) can or can't do in the matchup...

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 02:05 PM PDT

... I've been wondering: is there some kind of quick guide or something that lays out, in a few words, what to be careful to when you play vs X opponent ? How to exploit his weaknesses etc ?

Desolator vs MKB

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 01:55 PM PDT

In a game with no evasion whatsoever, which is better: Desolator or MKB? The desolator gives 50 damage per hit, and the MKB gives 60 pure damage 75% of the time, averaging out +45 per hit.

This means discounting the armor reduction from deso. and the attack speed + pure damage from mkb, desolator does objectively more damage.

However, I can't discount the other attributes of the items without my calculations being inaccurate.

So my question is: Does MKB do more damage on average over the same amount of time as Desolator, assuming no evasion heroes? When does desolator do more damage and when does MKB do more damage? When does the armor reduction + 5 more extra damage help you do more damage than the bonus attack speed and pure damage?

[offlane] why is my gpm/xpm so low every game

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 09:59 AM PDT

Dotabuff

in almost every game i play my gpm/xpm isnt that much better than the supports. my kda's arent any good either

idk if my laning's the problem, or im not joining fights too often/not farming enough/a mix of both

for laning ive been getting trilaned a lot lately, got used to it after getting destroyed by a super aggressive tri. now im surviving them but i still feel like im not getting the most value out of just surviving. post laning i only fight when i tp countergank. otherwise i just stay at lane

i know this stuff's hard to point out by just looking at stats, so just telling me what to look out for when i watch my replays would already help a lot.

When to go Magical/Physical Build on Shadow Fiend?

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 08:38 PM PDT

I'm a 2k Shadow Fiend player who's just now starting to think about itemization instead of just autopiloting my item builds every game and I don't know when Physical is the best option or when Magical is better. My only factor in deciding which to use is if I'm going late game I go Physical and if I want to end <35 mins I go magical but sometimes it doesn't work.

Improving farming patterns and efficiency

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 05:33 AM PDT

I'm learning to farm properly having played support exclusively for almost a year. My LH'ing is improving but it still needs work (the trainer has done a great job). I'm wondering what I did wrong in the following match. I was the safelane carry to practice brewmaster with friends but I only ended up with 470 GPM which is awful. The obvious thing is missing LHs from the first wave ಠ_ಠ

Could anyone help me understand what to do/not do?

Thanks.

How to get all the last hits while pushing?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:13 AM PDT

I feel like when I'm pushing in a rush, in those 30 seconds when enemy heroes are showing elsewhere, my main objective is to spam out the wave, not to last hit everything.

Even so, when shoving out a wave, I feel that the sheer mass of ally creeps makes it super hard to get all the last hits as support. TLDR: imagine youre a support rubick. How do you get all the last hits except the 2 you get with fade bolt, while competing with like 12 crepes?

How to startup dota in x64 by default?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 10:09 AM PDT

Hey, this isn't a normal LD2 question but I figured this was the best place to ask this.

My game recently has been crashing a lot and I dug through pages upon pages of google search results to find an answer, tried everything and it didn't work. On about the 3rd page I found someone suggesting to go to the folder where dota is in and run it in x64, which is what my computer is. I tried this and have had no crashes so far, which is great! But I haven't been able to figure out or find a way to start dota on x64 by default. Is there a way to change this in your launch options?

Why Solar Crests on Lifestealer?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:22 AM PDT

Just randomly looking through his Dotabuff when I noticed a bunch of players going something like Treads>Radiance>Solar Crest. First two of those items make perfect sense, but why Solar? Does it work like a slightly cheaper Deso alternative?
