If any F2P players would like to try some Witchwood decks, feel free to add me

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 01:12 AM PDT

I'll be opening quite a few packs today and doing some deckbuilding of my own, which means I'd be messing around in casual anyways.

If there are any decks that you'd like to try out and have some friendly competition, let me know. You'll send me a deck code (various ways you can create them online) and I'll plug it in without looking so that whatever your combo or game plan is, I'll be oblivious to.

Shoot me a message or leave a comment here so I can add you when I get home.

This will be on NA but other regions can also play due to deck sharing!

Edit: For non-NA mobile players, I have heard it is a pain to swap regions. Please browse through the comments as some Euro peeps have offered their btags as well.

Edit 2: Some people have not been wanting to tie their Battle-tag with their Reddit username. So my btag is Virus#12626 (NA).

Edit 3: I've had a few requests to stream pack openings and games. I don't stream often anymore and am not looking to develop a mass following, but if you'd like to tune in, you can at twitch.tv/godmodeomg

Edit 4: This is gaining a LOT more traction than I thought. I only expected maybe 3-5 people who would be interested. I need to apologize up-front because I may not have the chance to play with everyone tonight. You may need to browse the comments as many others have offered the same as me. I will also probably try to play once with every person that adds me, so please try to have your deck code ready!

Edit 5: OK I'm officially swamped and overwhelmed with the amount of attention and support. Please browse the comments for others, as there is no way I can play with everyone as much as I'd like. You can still shoot me a request but Day 1 is pretty booked now!

Who's ready to instantly concede after realizing they messed up their odd/even deck by putting wrong cards in it?

I know I sure am. And I am sure ready to watch my opponents do so too.

Witchwood decklists from streamers and players. Continuously updated!

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 07:56 AM PDT

Hey all,

It's that magical time of the year again. A new expansion and a new rotation!

I am eager to jump into Witchwood but being a not-so-great deck builder, (despite being over a year since I did a similar post, we're doing the same thing again - following top players on Twitch and Twitter and sharing their decklists here.

If you have a deck that's putting in work or have a decklist that you think it should be shared, leave a comment with the list (or where to find it) and I will add it to the post.

While ~2 hours away from launch, I scoured around the internet and came across some decks that I think has a lot of potential and some of them are quite detailed! I highly recommend checking out the Arugal Mage and Dire Brood Hunter. Some other decks semi-built themselves with the introduction of build-around cards or mechanics, such as Shudderwock Shaman and Rush Warrior.

Hope you guys find it useful!

(The lists are sorted by class, then latest)

Druid

Hunter

Mage

Paladin

Priest

Rogue

Shaman

You should delete all your decks before the new year starts to be able to log in faster.

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 12:33 AM PDT

This may have no impact but the bennefit is really big so I'll share it anyway.

Last year when the year of the mamooth arrived, most decks were "recatalogued" as Wild. This caused some sort of lag on the servers and made it almost impossible to log in for a large ammount of people. That may happen again this year so if you want to circumvent this try deleting all your decks before the new year starts so your account doesn't get in the "has to be recatalogued" queue.

Lightforge Arena Tier List (Witchwood Update)

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:59 AM PDT

tl;dr. We updated the tier list. Witchwood is generally low powered for Arena compared to last 3 expansions. Late Mid-Ranged / Control will be better than Aggro. Class rankings will mostly depend on how Blizzard buckets the new cards in the offerings, so impossible to predict under 10.4 drafting until buckets are revealed. Rogue is top candidate if Blizzard buckets correctly.

Intro:

Witchwood has arrived, and we'ved updated the Lightforge Arena Tier List with all the new cards, and adjusted all rates for the upcoming meta. We'd be lying if we said this was going to be a powerful set for the Arena, but with the rotation and changes to the draft, this will certainly be an interesting meta.

As always, the Lightforge Arena Tier List uses our internal algorithm to calculate the expected value of each card independent of win rates, helping filter out all the deck-based static (Blazecaller will have higher win rate than it should, because it will be disporportionately picked in high synergy decks), bad players dragging stats down (Acidic Swamp Ooze has lower avg win rates than Bloodfen Raptor; Carnivorous Cube having below average win rates), and systematic archetype favoritism (2-drops has historically had higher relative win rates for avg players than vets).

We score the cards with an absolute 0 for cards with no value, to 100 for cards with average value for being offered. This means a 150 tier list value card is exactly +50% the value of an average card, and a 75 rated card is exactly -25% the value of an average card. Cards in your deck usually end up with an average of 115-120 value (this changes each meta). We typically consider any card above 150 to be super premium and conversely any card below 85 to be deck-alteringly bad. A Chillwind Yeti for this upcoming expansion is 103. That's a historical low, reflecting the lowered importance of curve-stone to this meta.

Full changelog of algorithm changes is posted separately.

Neutral Meta-Definers:

Taunts are Back. - Phantom Militia (124) / Witchwood Grizzly (122) / Furious Ettin (113) / Rotten Applebaum (105). Despite leaving Old Gods behind, and some key arena taunt neutrals such as Bog Creeper and Psychotron, Witchwood meta will surprisingly see a similar number of high powered taunts. Taunts have been reloaded with 3 top scoring neutral cards. Although these aren't anywhere close to a true premium, such as Primordial Drake (160), Phantom Militia and Witchwood Grizzly are literally the top two scoring neutral cards in Witchwood. With the offering bonus, you'll be seeing plenty of these two cards, and they taunt for a LOT, with both cards having up to 12 health. If anything, this meta will be even less aggro friendly than prior metas.

3-Drops Over 2-Drops. - Blackwald Pixie (115) / Nightmare Amalgam (108) / Tanglefur Mystic (97). 3-mana 3/4s are BACK! With these three curve anchors in place, and many of your old more overpowered 3-drop favorites remaining (Literally the top 7 3-drop nuetrals are 2017 cards: Lone Champ, Stoneskin Basilisk, Dragonslayer, Tar Creeper, Void Ripper, Egnapper, Hyldnir Frostrider), 3-drops are still as powerful as before. More importantly to the meta, 2-drops are getting worse. Witchwood has only 1 2-drop, Spellshifter (80), and with a 1/4 or 4/1 statline, it's not good. Without a solid 2-drop backbone, and with the new 10.4 drafting system overrating 2-drops systematically, good players are heavily incentivized to skip 2-drops altogether and pick up a 1-3-3 curve for going second, and a 1-HP-3 curve going first. The new 3-drops being 3/4s punishes 2-drops even more, as that's the statline that destroys both 2/3s and 3/2s. This is doubly true if you are looking at Rogues, Paladins, or Shamans (classes that don't need to pass turn 2 due to hero power).

Initiative. - Swift Messenger (115) / Gilnean Royal Guard (114). Old gods had exactly 1 neutral card with initiative. K&C has 5. Witchwood will roll out with 8 neutral cards with initiative, making this the most initiative-heavy meta yet. More initiative, especially single target initiative, means less prediction necessary, and more answering what's on the board, which is a rather easy gameplay element. Not only will this favor classes and archetypes off the board, but it will also favor above average players, who know how and when to use answers, while being less favorable to bad players who don't, and top players who used to be able to edge out above average players with good reads. Predictive power and reads takes a even harder systemic hit as Swift Messenger and Gilnean Royal Guard destroys the ability for ANY reads on large removals, by their uncontrollable stat-swapping nature. To know your opponent has no large removal last turn, now no longer means much until 2 turns later (when opponent has drawn at least 2 cards, diluting the usefulness of the read by 50%, and the mana cost limitations by an extra mana).

5-Health Haven - The absence of new 5-damage tempo neutral or positive cards into the meta means that 5-health is the line where Arena players can get an advantage. Rotating out are: Bomb Squad, Spiked Hogleader, Shadow Strike, Firelands, Felfire Potion, Dragonfire Potion. Arcanite Reaper and Lava Burst are only remaining neutral or better tempo 5-damage removal in this meta. That means that at 5 health for 5 mana or less, you are guaranteed a positive tempo exchange in an empty board situation. This is extremely important to consider when setting up your board. On the flip side, lack of 5-damage removals means that despite the "small" size of 5 health, it is now a fairly valid target for hard removals for 7 of the 9 classes, especially tempo-focused decks, as they have no more efficient ways to remove 5 health from hand than 6+ health.

Class Archetype Shifts:

Mid-Range Hunter - Hunting Mastiff (146), Vilebrood Skitterer (122), Wing Blast (110), Carrion Drake (95). In the rotation, Hunter has lost a LOT of it's old high power curve cards of 1-3 mana. These were not replaced in Witchwood. Instead, Hunters got a rather nice selection of tools that require trading on the board (Wing Blast, Carrion Drake) to activate an effect, a hard removal in Vilebrood, and a flexible removal in Hunting Mastiff. With all the other Witchwood meta changes, such as stronger more consistent 3s than 2s, and the prevalence of large taunts, aggro hunter will have a hard time. So, the most successful Hunter archetype of this meta, will move a bit slower than even the up to this point historically slow K&C Hunter.

Board Priest - Nightscale Matriarch (135), Holy Water (117), Quartz Elemental (102), Squashling (88), Divine Hymn (62). Priest lost many of its control tools, including the extremely important Potion of Madness and Dragonfire Potion. Without these tools, and with the addition of the Witchwood cards, Priest archetypes will once again shift back toward favoring being on the board rather than off it. Nightscale Matriarch is playable from off the board, but extremely powerful if the hero power can be utilized the same turn to generate that extra 3/3. Holy Water is good as a control card, but can capture much larger minions when combine with some damage from the board. Quartz Elemental guarantees you'll have at least something to stick to the board and buff/heal, and Squashling and Divine Hymn are not good, but add to your options for healing your board.

Super Good Rogue - Blink Fox (149), Cursed Castaway (137), Mistwraith (135), Cheap Shot (123), Pick Pocket (105). Rogue will be one of the most powerful classes if not THE most powerful class in this meta. This isn't so much of an archetype as a series of amazing cards, including the stupidly statted Blink Fox (last year, this card would have cost 4 mana), unrivaled in raw power level except by the Rush Warrior. In particular, don't sleep on Mistwraith's ability to grow extremely fast, as Echo cards can be repeatedly triggered the next turn, and Rogue has two good Echo spells in Witchwood. This is a must remove for any Rogue's opponent. Add in the increased importance of a turn 2 hero power being useful, Rogue is in an excellent spot in Witchwood for the Arena.

Rush Warrior - Woodcutter's Axe (173), Town Crier (145), Militia Commander (134), Rabid Worgen (133), Redband Wasp (125), Warpath (104). Warriors have traditionally had problems hitting multiple targets on one turn due to limitations of one weapon slot and almost all thier removals being weapon based. Well, no more. Not only does the Warrior get the #1 rated Witchwood card in Woodcutter's Axe, but the entire package synergizes with the Rush mechanic, a goldmine in Arena, and Warriors get 3 premium rush cards as class cards! Rush is a better mechanic for the Arena Warrior than any other class and addresses their unique reliance of weapons for removal. It's hard to tell class rankings in the new system, as so much depends on how Blizzard chooses to bucket the new cards, but Warrior is certainly again a candidate to overperform.

Misc Important Cards:

Silver Sword (169) - We're going out on a limb here. Best weapon in Paladin. Yep, better than Vinecleaver. One turn later, does nothing on the turn you play it if you don't have a board.... but the next 3 turns. God, the next three turns. Tempo returned by the next turn, and a bonus of +5/6 tempo on average for turns 3 and 4. If this is in any offering bucket besides the premium one (with Vinecleaver and Steed), it should be an autopick to ensure you have one of these in your deck. More than one is questionable, but the first one's key to any Witchwood Paladin deck.

Druid of the Scythe (160) - Don't sleep on this guy! Flexibility is the key here, and this is rated as one of the most premium Druid cards in the game. A 3 mana 4 damage removal when you want it, or an emergency taunt. The flexibility here for 3 mana is insane. It doesn't look like much, and maybe the win rate won't be the highest for average players, but trust us, good players are going to have a field day with this guy.

Earthen Might / Bonfire Elemental (141)/(117) - Shamans lost a ton of in the rotation, but one bright spot is the increase in Un'Goro offering rates by thinning the pool, which means more elementals. Keep this in mind when drafting and facing Shamans. Elementals are MUST REMOVES against shamans now. In Witchwood, all Shamans are elemental shamans. Mages get a benefit here too, but the class is more flexible and frankly in a better spot, not to mention having fewer elementals, so the reliance is not as huge.
