| Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:33 PM PDT Although the blame is somewhat on the developers of Halo, it's important to realize the legal pressure they could be under. I've filed patents and copyrights myself, and the enforcement process is absolutely terrible. Granted, I have no knowledge of copyright laws outside of the US. Here, you cannot selectively enforce a patent, trademark, or other intellectual property. Ask any attorney based in IP. When you don't protect your brand once, you risk a different enforcement being challenged in court. Is Microsoft going after the Halo Online modding community because they aren't making money from it? I think it's a safe bet to say yes. However, what I said above means that even if 343 saw the project as harmless, the corporate lawyers at Microsoft would be in charge of this decision. I've worked with a lot of corporate lawyers and a lot of developers working under the power of said corporate lawyers. If you have threats to make, hatred to spew, or want to ruin someone's day, don't make it 343's problem. At the end of the day, a parent company controls many decisions, and what the lawyers at the highest levels say is all-powerful. The lawyers are responsible for protecting IP of Microsoft, and I doubt they understand many–if any–of the technicalities which play into Halo Online being financially harmless to MS. They heard about the Halo brand and some sort of proprietary code being used without explicit permission, and they shut that shit down. If anything, it comes across to me as if 343 put up a fight to make it less shitty for the devs on this project. Usually, these types of responses are 1000x more aggressive, and the lack of vague threats intrigues me. Imagine 343 trying to go to bat for this community and start an argument with corporate lawyers over IP. If you've ever met a paranoid, powerful corporate attorney, you know how that conversation would pan out. I've watched a startup struggle to use the term "open source" due to some internal controversy surrounding the public availability of 20 lines of code. I've watched the USPTO charge extra money to keep a trademark active due to technicalities of enforcement. I've seen patent lawyers chew out startups for not suing anyone who has similar tech. I know serial VCs who think everyone should be charged for uttering an idea which is somewhat similar to something they invested in. Finance, law, and tech can be soulless industries–it only gets worse as you climb the corporate ladder. Want to make a difference? Want to see your efforts as a passionate fan of the Halo series rewarded? Do what no one expects you to do: Write a letter to Microsoft's feedback devision. Target PR reps and let them know. Don't tweet, and definitely don't call. Corporate loves handwritten letters. Send an email if you have to, but a letter is so much better. Tell Microsoft that you want Halo on PC. Don't start bitching about Windows 10 and its Store, don't say mean stuff, just talk about the passion you have for the series. The point of this is to guarantee them a customer. No matter what you do, don't insist on pointing to metrics which are labeled useless by large corporations. The reality of corporate culture is harsh. No one cares about your Change.org petition when it comes to Halo on PC. Number of downloads won't mean number of customers. Upvotes, downvotes, and forum replies aren't considered accurate reflections of product interest. These platforms are great ways to measure community involvement, but corporations like something they can keep track of. So give them a metric that's easy to measure and hard to ignore. Not a copy/paste letter, not an angry phone call, but a letter or email. Write down every happy thought you've ever had about Halo, add in every reason for it to be on PC, make it clear you would buy it assuming it is released as a quality product, and send it to them. If everyone reading this subreddit did this, everything could change. Right now, there are absolutely no corporate reps who think gamers are passionate enough to take time out of their day to write to the company who owns their favorite franchise. The more threats you send, the more hate mail you pile up, and the more days you ruin, the less anyone will listen to you. Get something physical in the hands of PR reps. If someone asks, "Where is the market for Halo on PC? How do we know these people want to purchase it?" The PR rep can point to a stack of letters. Corporate reps don't want to know player stats from what they consider to be a pirated game. They want letters of intent. They want to know they can depend on a customer base. Most of all, they want to see passionate market value. I'm sure there will be a reply talking about why this is useless. I'm sure someone will say "it won't make a difference because [reasons]." However, if you care enough, you'll take the time to work as a community to change the minds of Microsoft. What I'm suggesting takes very little time Whatever you do, please don't make the lives of 343 employees any harder. Game development can be hell, and collective anger of a community can make a bad day worse. If you really want to make someone happy, thank 343 for not starting an all-out war on this. I'm sure they were pressured towards being far more punishing. [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:45 AM PDT I came over to here after sifting through the Halo Online subreddit because between the handful of people trying to put out the fire right now there is nothing but hate thrown at Microsoft, 343i and anyone inbetween. Halo Online is an amazing experience and I'm waiting eagerly to see what Microsoft chooses to do going forward just like everyone else that's in the old school camp. At the same time I'm hoping we see some Halo 6 news this year at E3. I'm in both camps, and am keen to see what they do to build on what Halo 5 had going for it. I'm not here to pick a side because I love Halo. The story, the themes and the gameplay regardless of which title we're looking at. You don't have to. You are completely allowed to have you're favourites and want your favourite type (Classic or Advanced Movement) to come out on top. But that doesn't mean you're allowed to bring down the other side. You're allowed to voice your opinion and raise your points but when we're devolving to name calling and stuff then no one ends up happy. Microsoft seems to be working out what to do with Halo Online and the amazing team that slaved away at it. From the replies Phil Spencer has been throwing out to emails it even looks like they are working out how to incorporate that work or atleast the team going forward. Let's not forget about the MCC improvements and Microsoft's commitment to play anywhere titles. I wouldn't be surprised to see MCC come to PC along with Halo 6 when it's issues are finally ironed out. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Eldewrito team involved in the classic side of things. Right now I can't find a safe place to just enjoy Halo talk and that fucken sucks. I know you're all just passionate and want to be heard, but I just needed to vent. Seeya out there Spartans. | Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:27 PM PDT Look at this. I'm literally playing Team DMR's in Halo 3 on High Ground, which is a Halo 3 map. Not to mention you can play on maps from any Halo, on the Halo 3 engine with the Halo 3 mechanics and movement style. I'm afraid Microsoft/343 will drop future Halo games on PC and you'll be limited to use the items, weapons, vehicles and maps that are specific to only one game. [link] [comments] | ||

| Halo 5: PLEASE Add Solo and Duo Queue for the Official Competitive Playlist Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:35 PM PDT Please 343, match parties of 1-2 with parties of 1-2 and parties of 3+ in separate queues. Matching full teams as a solo or duo queue totally ruins the competitive matchmaking experience. Not only would adding a solo/duo and team queue increase the integrity of the game, but also encourage communication between players in game. A system like this has been proven to work before in a competitive console FPS (although that game was Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, one of the most successful console esports of all time).
