Fallout - T-51 power armor completely ignored for 378 hours.

T-51 power armor completely ignored for 378 hours.

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 06:23 AM PDT

I just discovered this power armor even exists. After some wiking it starts appearing after level 15 but in all my play throughs I rush BOS for the free set of T-60. In this current play through I've completely ignored the main quest up to Diamond City and have been doing Railroad stuff. I still have no idea how I missed an entire generation of Power Armor. Edit—- Haha really didn't expect this to blow up. Glad other people blew over the t-51 like I did. Also I think X01 looks the best, and that t-51 has a nice look. I prefer the more armory looks of the others, however. I think 51 has a strong space vibe with that weird visor.

To all those wondering why Obsidian isn’t making a NV sequel.

Killing Kellogg was one of the most satisfying things I've done in Fallout.

Sorry if spoilers, but after what he did in the vault and being a jackass in general, it was completely satisfying to take a baseball bat to his head.

Starting Fallout 4 for the first time, any useful pointers for someone new to the series?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 04:39 AM PDT

Pretty much the title. I played fallout 3 very briefly years ago (15 hours tops) and a fair amount of Skyrim so I'm not completely clued out of a Bethesda game - but any tips and tricks for someone just starting out with fallout that you wish you knew at the beginning of Fallout 4?

Edit: thanks everyone for all the advice! Finally finished downloading so now onwards to 6 hours of character customisation!

All these Pip-Boy skins on Creation Club, and still no Pimp-Boy 3 Billion

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 07:20 PM PDT

Shame on you Bethesda. If you're going to try and sell us pip-boy skins, at least get the OG reskin in there.

Yo I know people have been salty about this earlier but what if the brotherhood became a division of/ advisors to the NCR?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 08:56 AM PDT

How do you think it could help/hinder the NCR? Would the NCR become controlled by the brotherhood? Yes I know this whole prompt is directly against the codex. I already got a whole lot of flak on the oxhorn discord for having an imagination. Think of it like the early Vulcan/human relationship but a bit more smooth.

Just a quick PSA that 40s Junction on XM radio is a perfect compliment to any Fallout game.

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 03:40 AM PDT

Channel 73.

I play it from my phone on my desk so it feels more like an analogue radio on my forearm. Plus then when things get intense over my speakers it gets drowned out and feels more in-game. Other than the weird interludes and XM callouts, it blends well with the immersion.

Should I get Fallout 4 despite knowing a major spoiler?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:34 PM PDT

Should I get fallout 4 despite that I know that your son is actually some (evil?) old man and there is also some younger synth version of your child he made as well.

That's all I know spoiler wise about the story (besides having watched the first 45 mins or so of gameplay on YouTube) and from what I can tell it seems that it's a pretty major spoiler.

If we're getting so many dogs with the creation club we should at least get cool stuff like the night-stalkers and rob-dogs from fallout NV

[New Vegas] I there any way to make R2 and L2 on dualshock4 work, while playing on PS3.

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 11:02 AM PDT

So yeah, that's frustrating. I only have a broken ds3 I use just to press PS button.

Nothing really is that bad, except inability to mod weapons which I see as a major flaw.

Historical parallels of the Railroad and the Underground Railroad (Some spoilers)

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:46 PM PDT

Playing through Fallout 4, the Railroad became my favorite faction pretty much immediately. Part of it was their altruistic mission, part of it was how well they played as rogues (taking out the entire BoS with just two guys and a bomb was epic) and part of it (probably most of it, tbh) was how badass of a companion Deacon was, but another big part of it was having a history degree and having studied the abolitionist movement, and how well the Railroad paralleled that movement.

There's a lot rooted in historical fact:
The Old North Church: This one is pretty obvious, but support for the abolitionist movement - especially among white abolitionists - in the 18th and 19th century was largely based on religious objections, such as the early support among Quakers, John Brown (a devout Calvinist), Henry Ward Beecher (a minister who sent rifles to abolitionists during Bleeding Kansas), etc. That being said there were free-staters who often opposed the spread of slavery out of economic fears such as loss of jobs or wages, and even among abolitionists there was a debate over the equality and civil rights of African Americans, but regardless religious beliefs were a common motivation for abolitionists and for a game that generally avoids religion in it's lore using the Old North Church as a base was probably the closest they'd get for this allusion. This was also where lanterns were hung in the famous "one if by land, two if by sea" quote where lanterns were hung to warn Charlestown of the means of a pending British invasion (fun fact: my phone wants to capitalize "Invasion" like the fucking Beatles fad in the U.S. Sigh.) - it's not related to abolitionism, but it is a tie-in to the lantern theme and the myth that Underground Railroad stops put lanterns in their windows.

There's also Deacon's code name which references both a clerical office in Christian churches, but also alludes to his personality - the literal meaning of the word meaning "servant" or "messenger", Deacon being a character that avoids leadership roles and prefers to do his intelligence work in the shadows.

Code names and terminology: Some of the tales regarding secret codes in the Underground Railroad (quilt codes, songs, etc.) are not evidenced in the historical record but it did use railroad terminology and false names to protect the identities of workers and fugitive slaves. "Stations" were hiding places, "Conductors" were guides, "Station Masters" were people who hid slaves, "stockholders" were financiers, "cargo" were escaped slaves, "Heaven" was Canada and northern states, and etc. Harriet Tubman was sometimes referred to as "Moses", and many used false names to protect everyone involved.

Decentralization, compartmentalization, and spy craft: In the Memory Interrupted quest, Glory complains about compartmentalization when she's assigned to the same mission as the sole survivor - this is similar to the way the Underground Railroad operated, where most volunteers didn't know any further than the next one or two stops on the path in order to protect the organization. Additionally, Underground Railroad members often sent folks to plantations or other places under the pretense of being doctors, tutors, etc., in order to gather information, connect with the families of escaped slaves, etc. Harriet Tubman made several trips of this sort, worked as a spy for the Union army during the Civil War, and worked to recruit slaves to join John Brown in his raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859 (which ultimately failed due to the raid being delayed after information about it was leaked and because Harriet Tubman could not be found at the time of the raid most likely due to illness). Which leads me to...

The Institute raid/Nuclear Option: The Institute Raid seems likely to be based on John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. John Brown's raid was intended to steal weapons from a United States arsenal which would be used to arm an arriving slave uprising which would have traveled into the Adirondack mountains, allowing many to escape while some would remain and maintain a guerrilla army that would act as a militant Underground Railroad, protecting runaway slaves and periodically attacking plantations and liberating slaves (John Brown became experienced in guerrilla warfare during Bleeding Kansas, where after the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 pro-slavery Missourians known as "Border Ruffians" and abolitionists flooded into the incoming state of Kansas to either support or oppose a popular vote on on slavery). Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, because John Brown's speech during his trial made him a hero in the north and the fear of more Harper's Ferry style raids frightened the south, and many historians agree contributed to a four-way split in the Democratic party over slavery in the 1860 election that allowed Abraham Lincoln to win with only 40% of the popular vote, all of which contributed to the Civil War and eventually the Emancipation Proclamation) John Brown's raid failed because the slave uprising never appeared for reasons I mentioned earlier, but the plan is very similar to the Institute raid in Nuclear Option, where a synth uprising is organized by Z1-14 which is coordinated with the Railroad's attack.

There's also references to folklore regarding the Underground Railroad:
Rail signs: The rail signs that agents use to communicate with each other are very similar to stories about quilt codes and other secret markings which were supposed to be hidden in plain sight and communicate routes to escaped slaves. These stories are not evidenced in diaries (they began with a book called Hidden in Plain View in 1999), interviews by the Works Progress Administration, etc., and have been heavily contested, though the secretive nature of the Underground Railroad, the compartmentalization mentioned earlier, and the fact that these quilts would have likely been crafted by black women who's experiences would be the most likely to be lost to history means these codes could possibly have been used by a few station masters or agents but not be widespread. It's a very interesting debate to be sure, though I'm more willing they didn't exist.

Lanterns: This one is unquestionably alluded to in F4, being the symbol of the faction and seen in most clandestine Railroad meeting places such as when Old Man Stockton introduces you to H2-22 in Boston After Dark. This is similar to the point regarding quilt codes that compartmentalization could make it possible that one or a few could use this method of communication without it being widespread in the Underground Railroad, except that this one did happen - the Ohio abolitionist John Rankin used some kind of lantern light to indicate when it was safe to cross the Ohio River to his station. However, the suggestion that this was a common practice is a myth.

And I believe there were some missed opportunities:
Beecher's Bibles: Beecher's Bibles were rifles (Sharp's rifles, which were pretty advanced at the time) sent by anti-slavery groups to abolitionists in Bleeding Kansas, in particular by Henry Ward Beecher of whom the New York Tribune wrote "he believed that the Sharps Rifle was a truly moral agency, and that there was more moral power in one of those instruments, so far as the slaveholders of Kansas were concerned, than in a hundred Bibles," which led to the nickname "Beecher's Bibles". It's said that they were shipped in boxes labeled "bibles" but that's probably a myth, though they were shipped in boxes labeled "books", etc.

I think with the prevalent theme of slavery in both F3 and F4, a legendary rifle named "Beecher's Bible" would have been a perfect fit. F3 had "Lincoln's Repeater" which a Beecher's Bible could have been a variant of (especially since the Lincoln's Repeater can be given away to Hannibal Hamlin), and even though lever-action rifles were introduced in Far Harbor a Beecher's Bible could have been purchased in Arcadia or given by Boxer (the Railroad agent there) or an Arcadia resident. I wish I had the ear of a Creation Club contributor for this one.

Funding of free slave communities: In the northeast, most abolitionist support was from wealthy financiers who donated to the Underground Railroad, sent weapons, funded John Brown's raid, etc. In some places, wealthy patrons bought land and experimented with creating communities for freed slaves, such as Gerrit Smith who bought land in North Elba, New York, where John Brown would move his family and later be buried after his execution (Gerrit Smith was also one of the Secret Six who helped fund the Harper Ferry's raid). I think it would have been a cool nod to history if someone like Old Man Stockton could have funded such a community, especially if it could have been Covenant after removing the anti-synth folks there.

Mind Wipes: This doesn't relate to history, but I think the mind wipes in F4 should have been left out because they don't make sense. I feel like they were included to make the Railroad seem more morally gray - even though they are an entirely elective procedure - but the concept of mind wipes being used to protect runaway synths doesn't make sense when knowledge of the Institute would better help synths evade the Synth Retention Bureau than the risk of them accidentally blabbing. I feel like if the writers absolutely wanted mind wipes, they should have been characterized as a way to let synths escape the trauma of a life in slavery. If I had been a writer I'd have argued to leave this out, it was completely unnecessary.

Wow, I did not mean to cover that fucking much or type for so long. But it really shows how much historical inspiration went into the Railroad, especially compared to the really loose inspiration of the Minutemen which doesn't go much further than a location (Lexington and Concord) and a weapon.

What are your role-playing rules while playing BOS in Fallout 4?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 08:12 AM PDT

So I want to play with the BOS in Fallout 4 since I haven't done them before. I want to role-play really hard and be a proper Brotherhood soldier who is fully in line with Elder Maxson.

Here are the things I have already decided to do for that:

  • I will ignore the Minutemen and Preston Garvey completely.
  • I will ignore settlements and building completely except for the airport base.
  • Synths are abominations and I should always opt to kill them.

What other rules should I follow? Also what quests are best for a Brotherhood character and what quests will not fit with one at all.

Also I have not played Nuka World yet. Is it fitting for the BOS? (minimum spoilers please)

After playing fallout 4 for the last few years on and off I decided to boot up New Vegas (with tale of the two wasteland mods) and man... what a difference

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT

So I've done a bit of polishing to the game, I installed huge texture packs for fallout 3 and NV together. Installed the games to work together with the TTW mod which is absolutely amazing. Got a nice ENB going and motion blur and the battlefield animation pack and then left it at that. Want to keep the game stable but damn!!!

This is a quick Snapchat I sent to my brother because I was impressed lol, i hooked it up to my living room. https://youtu.be/YnLfXbNhLYQ

The game feels fresh! I'm fucking excited I played the shit outta this series when I was younger. I just finished anchorage and galaxy news radio last night so I'm feeling well setup. Might travel to he mojave soon and grab Boone aswell..

I still got 2 main stories to complete. All the side content and another 8 DLCs to complete. The RPG side really immerses you this game. Sorry if pointless post but I'm sitting on the train to work and all I can think about is getting back home, been a long time since I genuinely wanted to play video games again.

Have a good day everyone
